Favorite Female vocals that give you goose bumps

My current favorites are Eva Cassidy's "The water is wide" and "Autumn Leaves", Kiki Dee's "Take my breath away" and Ella Fitzgerald's "Angel eyes" and "Lush life".

Try Alison Krauss's track (#5. i think) on her brother Victor Krauss's 'far from enough' CD. Breath taking.

Also try slow smoldering smoking (!) tracks from the debut album of Alisson Goldfrapp ' felt mountain'
Let's play two... Beth Rowley's CD "Little Dancer" is an absolute keeper. Her rendition of Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" will knock you out. Rachael Yamagata's CD "Elephants" is also really good. She does a duet with Ray Lamontagne that's very good.
Thanks for the recommendation on Melody Gardot. Pleasantly surprised! You guys and gals should pick it up.
My first post: A second for the hugely overlooked Maria McKee.

Her cover of Van Morrison's "The Way Young Lovers Do" is a goose-bumper. Also, three in a row on Lucinda Williams' Essence, "Steal Your Love," "Envy the Wind," and "Blue." and Nina Simone's "Sinnerman" up there, too ..
So many good suggestions. For classical the new singers are wonderful, but still nowhere near Callas, Joan Sutherland and most wonderful of all Vittoria De Los Angeles. Her duets with Jossi Bjorling, just heaven
As for popular, I will try not to repeat the excellent suggestions, I would add Katrine Madsen the Scandinavian Jazz singer, Rosie Thomas, Eliza Gilkyson, Liz Wright, Cassandra Wilson
Hmmm.... Bond. Yes, I just added their albums to my Rhapsody subscription. Now I have them all and am listening as I type this. Might sound hokey, but this would be excellent music for when I do intervals on the treadmill.

Here's some different female vocalists I enjoy; they are quite diverse in sound, from the "little girl" shrillish sound to the deep, sounds like she's smoked all her life sound:

Carly Simon "Have You Seen Me Lately"
Swing Out Sister (Corinne Drewery) - Anything she sings!
Anything But the Girl (Tracy Thorn) "Amplified Heart"
Sixpence None the Richer (Leigh Nash) "Best of..."
Christina Aguilera's "Song for You" on Herbie Hancock's Possibilities disc
Kate Bush "The Whole Story"
Beth Nielsen Chapman "Beth Nielsen Chapman"

Absolutely right regarding "Diamonds and Rust"; I've heard very few pieces as stunning for demo/assessing set up of system and, of course, for pure enjoyment of female voice.
Although not a fan of her genre of music, the "goosebumps" label was applied to my backside by Laura Branigan. An '80's backup singer of Leonard Cohen with a 4 octave range, she was more popular overseas than in the US. But her voice could cause a mummy to stir and she still finds my rotation every month or so. Check out the Youtube video of her "Self Control" video, banned by MTV for awhile for being too sensual. (Too Sensual!!, have you seen what's on MTV!)
Nina Simone, Mavis Staples, Patti Smith, Janis Joplin... (come to think about it a lot of them do)
Early Joan Baez on Vangaurd - half the reason I resurrected my analog system a couple of months ago -CD transfers either aren't available or not quit equal to the LP's. Simply astonishing voice.The funny thing is I'm still digging thru the LP pile looking for the rest of these - keep getting pleasantly distracted by "Hot S%^t - haven't heard this in 10+ years" moments - onto the TT it goes.Shows a lack of discipline - but what joy!
Stacy Kent is a favorite. With a glass of wine and the lights down, you'd swear she's in the room playing a private concert for you. I've always liked Dianna Krall though to. But...I have this one recording of an opera singer who solos and then a backup choir comes in and every time I hear it I get massive goosebumps and my eyes water. It's the Toby Church Chamber Choir singing Marias Vaggsang. I don't know what they are singing, but it's amazing.
A few operatic singers;

Elina Garanca;
Anna Netrebko;
Renee Fleming;
and even the still looking good Kiri Te Kanawa.

Emilie Autumn.
I have a penchant for female singers Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, Kate Bush, Alison Krauss, Amy Lee, Hayley Williams, Sara Watkins, Terri Nunn, Enya, Susanna Hoffs, Sarah Brightman and many others.
Jennifer Charles, The group: Elysian Fields The CD: Bleed Your Cedar
This gal has a sultry, sexy, voice that haunts you in its own unique way. And surprise very well recorded. If your looking for a new adventure and female vocalist with a dark twist, this might be it. The bass on this recording has to be heard.
Nicole Atkins, in whose voice you can hear traces of Edith Piaf, Mama Cass Elliot, and Roy Orbison. Needless to say, those first two belong in this discussion, also.
And don't overlook Marlene Dietrich, whose "Lili Marlene" is outstanding in English, even better in German.
Tierney Sutton singing "Something Cool". A tattered raincoat of regrets.

Also, in a slightly different vein, listen to her version of "Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead". It's very...ummmm...well, it ain't Garland, that's for sure.
I would have to also give a nod to Ricki Lee. Listen to A Girl and Her Volcano, Funny Valentine (live) Tremendous range and feeling, always plays with top notch musicians and is an excellent composer, musician and recording artist.
Not goosebumps exactly but I love the chick's decadent laugh in the surf guitar classic "Church Key" by The Revels.

I love the tune itself as well! Cowabunga!!!!

Lalah Hathaway, Asha Rabouin ... both I like mostly when they do guest vocals on other peoples songs.
Check out the new CD from Leslie Mendelson "Swan Feathers". Her rendition of "Be My Baby" is really good.
How about Shirley Bassey?

Vaughn, Fitzgerald, Simone, Krall - Jazz

..and Allison Krauss on the song "New Favorite" - popular

Then there's classical and all the great vocalists (o:
When I heard this in my friends system, my ears teared up and I choked up. Never happened before in my life... ;(

Giorgia Fumanti, Your life, from her 2007 Album from my heart.

System this was heard on:
Weiss Jason transport / Medea DAC
Venture Audio CR2 bookshelf
Venture Audio Pre/Power Amp
Venture Audio Cabling
Kate Bush, awesome. Classical Elizabeth Harwood Handel's Messiah SirMalcolm Sargent Chesky Release, great Soprano
Would agree with most all the examples mentioned. Hands down, the songbird I want singing me into the hereafter is Christine McVie. If her solo "For You" doesn't move you you're already in the next world.
Allison Moorer, sister of Shelby Lynne.
Great Voice, face and body. She has it all, but still really an unknown artist.
Just picked up the SACD "Show" fantastic live album.
The track with Shelby titled, " Going Down" is a real rocker.
Shelby Lynne is not bad either. Listening to Just A Little Lovin right now and it is a great album.
Tzh21y, I have all of Shelby Lynne recordings too.
But, Allison Moorer is still a realitivly unknown artist.
