I would not bother too much with these haters. Daveyf1 has been bashing Magico for years, even manage to get his ass kicked out of few other forums just for being the ’lovely’ person he is.

@mheinze  I am not a Magico fanboy if you are asking that, and I don't get upset when someone offers an opinion of my speaker. You own A3's, good for you, so when i stated that they didn't impress me, you didn't like that...too bad. I have heard Magico's that did impress me, so saying I thrash Magico's anywhere I can is not accurate. I do have better things to do...question is--do you? Like I said before, have a nice day.

Other people, including myself, say that you don't need a "huge monster amp to drive it," but you, of course, choose to concentrate on some random negative comment from someone with one(!!) AG post. You been thrashing Magico anywhere you can, don't you have better things to do?

If you did this, MAYBE you would have read this from member easy_h:

Is that telling anyone that this speaker can be easily driven...Duh!

We are talking about the A5 here, a speaker you apparently know nothing about, yet you already assume it needs a "huge monster amp to drive it". I have heard the A5 with Octave tube integrated amplifier; it is 120W per channel, it was one of the best sound I ever heard (You, I am sure, will think that it is "nothing special").

Regardless, anyone who would spend that kind of money on a speaker should know what he is going to run it with.

I have heard the A3, nothing special at all IMHO.
The A5 may very well be a totally different sounding speaker, I sure hope it is, but the fact remains that if one has to buy a huge monster amp to drive it, how great is that??

I have an a’phile friend who went out and spent a lot of money on a nice three way metal speaker ( brand not relevant) and thought he was going to get great sound with his 75 watt/ch tube amp ( no problemo says his dealer!)..only to find that in order to drive his new speaker, he had to a) buy a ss amp that could push 300+ watts/ch and do it into a brutal low impedance load and b) he had to spend roughly equivalent to what he spent on the speakers in order to accomplish this. Not a happy camper........

Apologies accepted.  You could have heard the Magico M2, S3MkII,
A1, A3, Q5, Q7 or the S1MkII here at Brooks Berdan.  We never have displayed the S5 however.  

By the way Mark Levinson gear pairs very well with Magico.  I would like to invite anyone interested to please come into the store for a listen.

I know nothing about Magico’s impedance curve, but generally I think the answer to that question is most audiophiles get turned on by hard to drive speakers for two reasons:

1 - The myth that a speaker that can make the the difference between two amps current capabilities apparent also means the speaker is more resolving of music. It isn’t.



2 - Bragging rights.



To be fair, it really is hard to get enough bass and sensitivity out of your average 2.5 way speaker without a low impedance point, so I can understand how some speaker designs just naturally push this requirement, but I also see some manufacturers who go this route and then discover it’s a selling point.

Did you hear the A5?

How many folk have bought a high and speaker for some serious coin and then realized that it takes a monster power amp to even get them to sound! If the A5's are a brutal load and need a ton of amp power upstream, how many folk will still consider them?

Here is an anybody who thinks the KEF Blade for one is better than every Magico I have heard, from the A3 to top end Q series model.

I like the Magico S3 MKII the best of all the Magicos I have heard. I have not heard M series. I heard these in the great audio stores in the Los Angeles area and at local shows.

Yesterday I bought a speaker that I like much more than my fav Magico S3 MKII, the ancient Thiel CS3.7. I liked the Yamaha NS5000, KEF Blade, Vivid Giya over all Magicos. Not that Magico were terrible, they just did not sound as incredible as these others.

I have a second system I am building later and I would be interested to hear if the Magico A5 gets me to the same level of happiness as the 3 other speakers I listed.

How about that? My ear appointment is scheduled for after Covid.

BTW - I heard the Magico A3 with the top end Mark Levinson separates setup at Brooks Berdan and I thought it was rather good with the ML. I had preconceived notions that ML was not that good. I also heard the ML 585 integrated with the A3 and it was almost as good. That is for the price.

If anybody thinks a kef is even remotely close in sq as a Magico, they need to take up another hobby or get their ears checked. Same goes for tekton speakers. There is more innovation in the Magico mpods than in any Tekton speaker.

We have the Magico A5 speakers paired with a Bryston 4B3 amplifier and it sounds excellent with tight and authoritative bass

Well that’s pretty cool, I’ve only heard them with new Mark Levinson amps and I don’t think I’d recommend that combo.

Feels like a dislike of bryston. I owned their 6B-SST powering some pretty crazy Triad In-room Platinum speakers in my home theater and I hated the bryston sound. Finally landed on classe and never looked back for years until I moved. 

We have the Magico A5 speakers paired with a Bryston 4B3 amplifier and it sounds excellent with tight and authoritative bass. The tweeter is not at all harsh, although the S- and M-series tweeters are of course much smoother.

I run my A3, which is less efficient than the A5 with Pass INT-250.
That is a 250 watt amp. No problem.

@aj523 bryston 7b sst2 goes to 900watt@ 4ohm. But it sound horrendous. No bass , edgy on the high. I think A5 need high current amp with above 500 damping factor

Don’t know how the A5’s sound in comparison, but I got to hear the Magico S5 MkII recently.   They were driven by Convergent amp and preamp, and the sound was incredible. Best system I’ve heard by a wide margin. 

I would expect all speakers costing $20k to deliver top notch sound .  Magico or otherwise.   Which top notch one prefers or works best in each case is a different story.

This is a big if often times underappreciated part of owning a real world-class high value speaker: it makes you search all over planet Earth trying in vain to find an amp that can drive it. The one way to be sure you have the best speaker? When no amp at any price has enough power to run it. The speaker is just "too good". People who complain a good speaker should be easy to drive, don’t give them the time of day. They probably think Tekton is good, when in reality almost any amp can make them sound great. As if. Clearly the more money you have to spend on the amp, the better the speaker.

Game changer for magico fans.....you have yo like there sound. You do realize they will likely sell 150 pairs in usa over a year...some ideas from people who know. Lets not make this the cure for cancer. 

Rhapsody Audio sells very high priced Alyvox Panel speakers, Bayz Audio Counterpoints and other high-end speakers but the Magico A5's are their favorite speakers right now !

Every time I read Highend saying that he's not associated with said brand I feel sick as it's simply not true, and yes they will be better than Tekton  in every possible way, the engineering alone is light years ahead.
