Linn users, what is your preference for your platter mat?
The original felt mat is what i use. Mine has shrunk a little round the edges, so I will probably get a newer mat from Linn. The felt mats are what I have used for years, but they can attract to the record with static if one isn't careful. The ne...
The new dCS Varese DAC...it is so good that all others are now relegated to history??
@kennyc  'Fear of obsolescence' is something that anyone who dips their toes into the waters of digital high end audio should be very cognizant of. Particularly given the speed in which digital improves and given the price asked of products like t...

@bdp24   Living in Palm Desert pretty much guarantees that you will be using AC during the summer months. When you add a tube amp like you owned with that many tubes, you will be running AC full bore. Not what i want to hear ( or feel) in my liste...

@sns Great point about heat being the enemy of reliability. Not only that, but also the fact that the more heat an amp gives off, the quicker the room heats up. In certain climates that is very undesirable. Living in S.California, I do not want ...
Need to learn about Audio Research
I used to own one of the ARC amps from what many consider the 'golden age' of ARC...the mid to late 80's. This amp was the ARC D70Mk2..and it was one of the best sounding amps I have ever heard. Today, this amp would still be competitive with some...
The new dCS Varese DAC...it is so good that all others are now relegated to history??
@tunehead Excellent point. When it comes to DAC’s..and maybe digital gear in general, it is an area that seems to evolve at a quicker pace than say...analog, or just about anything else in audio. How many here would pay the ask for the new dCS V...
The new dCS Varese DAC...it is so good that all others are now relegated to history??
@geardaddie   You say the Varese was as good as vinyl or tape that was on hand. I have to believe that the tape you hand on hand was not that great, as IME tape is a significant step up in SQ over vinyl, if done correctly. The source is always the...
How many times can u visit a hifi store before it annoys the store if u plan on a purchase
Many years ago, when I was fairly new to this hobby, I would do all of my business with one local shop. I bought a fair amount of gear from this fellow and his company along with records etc., At the time he was the Linn turntable dealer, so i bou...
Linn Bedrok LP12 Plinth Upgrade
@lewm After I showed the engineer the video, he remarked that the bearing is a single point oil bearing. If I remember correctly, he mentioned that the oil is what acts as a surface for the tension between the shaft and the walls. I believe he me...

Why do tube amps often subjectively sound more powerful than SS ?
I swap in a 250watt/ch ss amp with my 45watt/ch tube mono blocks. I leave the volume control on the preamp at exactly the same setting for both amps, as the volume in the room from the speakers is identical.

@newton_john indeed, there are folks on this thread who assume a lot about the Linn table, you know what they say about folks who ‘assume’ things.   @dover My discussions with the mechanical engineer was in reference to the bearing, since you s...

@curiousjim  My first Hafler 220 was a class A/B design. I think they all were.
a rant
One thing that always amuses me is how many reviewers come out with immense amounts of hyperbole about the gear under review, yet fail to have any idea as to the gear that was used to make the recording they are listening to. Many times the record...
Why do tube amps often subjectively sound more powerful than SS ?
Maybe because the particular tube amp you are enjoying has a great transformer....;0)
