Here's a couple of new ones..

"I know it's true
because I saw it on TV"

"trying to stop the bleeding
with scotch tape
platelets spoil adhesion
fire up the cauterizing iron"

Hey Ron, didn't see you called, but I'm usually out on the golf course these days.  That one's easy, Simon and Garfunkle, I am a Rock.

The Dylan one I posted earlier is from Subterranean Homesick Blues.  He certainly had some crazy lyrics in a lot of his early songs.

One of mine was Robert Plant’s "Ship of Fools".

Always loved it and the whole lp is very good!

Have a great one!
"I don't keep liquor here
never cared for wine or beer
and working for the county keeps me pissing clear
these nights are dry as dust
but I'm letting my eyes adjust..."
" Strip off your pride your acting like a teeny-bopper run away (child)
Scrape off the paint off the face of a...
...Little (town) saint"
"Walkin' tall machine gun man, they spit on me in my homeland, Gloria sent me pictures of my boy, got my pills 'gainst mosquito death, my buddy's breathing his dying breath....oh God please won't you help me make it through....
"and what have you got
at the end of the day?
what have you got, to take away?
a bottle of whiskey and a new set of lies
blinds on the window and a pain behind the eyes"...
"then came the mines
then came the ore
then there was the hard times
then there was a war".........
"misery is summers' day
only find it slips away...to grey
how's it bring her pain

thinking how it use to be
does she still remember times like these
to think of us again..
and I do..."
"I am a tough ball of twine
I had a duty to do
I been tied to the table
but now I am frazzled and aloof

acorn squash and a hearty rows of okra
strand of sweet corn by the trickling creek
winter dead that was buried ’neath
the pole - beans
behold! a sink hole in the spring"...

If anyone figures it out...put it on and turn it up!
"on waves of love my heart is breaking
stranger still my self-control, I can't rely on anymore
new tides surprise, my word it's changing
within this frame, an ocean swells
behind this smile, I know it well.

beneath a lover's moon - I'm waiting
I am the pilot of this storm
adrift in pleasure - I may drown
I built this ship it is my making
and further more my self - control
I can't rely on anymore

you claim that no man is an island
while I land up in jeopardy
more distant from you by degrees
I walk this shore in isolation
and at my feet eternity
lays ever sweet plans for me"...
rcprince,

No, I could not but it seems rpeluso did.

(I had just watched "The Graduate" again recently).

If you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind / Grateful Dead, Franklin's Tower

Counting stars by candlelight, all are dim but one is bright / Grateful Dead, Terrapin Station

Cinderella, she seems so easy, "it takes one to know one she says", She smiles & puts her hands in her back pocket, Betty Davis style / Bob Dylan, Desolation Row

I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame
And every time I pass that way I always hear my name / Bob Dylan, Every Grain Of Sane

Live music is better, bumper stickers should be issued / Neil Young, Union Man
Slaw:  Simon and Garfunkle, The Sounds of Silence (or The Sound of Silence, depending on whether you are talking about the acoustic version or the electric version).  Figure mine out from way back yet?
Out on the road today
I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head said:
"Don’t look back, you can never look back."

I have quite seriously toyed with making that one into a bumper sticker.

A little bit of recursion for the rest of the world to ponder while they look at the bumper of my car.
"your six blade knife can do anything for you
anything you want it to
one blade for breaking my heart
one blade for tearing me apart
you're six blade knife- do anything for you"

boxer12,

Can't think of yours. Interested in the origin.

Mine- I have always had a fondness for this Southern classic;
whiskey bottles and brand new cars
Oak tree you're in my way...

Todd Rundgren, Soul Brother off Liars (2004):

I didn't just pull into town
This happened right before my eyes
There's something missing in the sound
That so used to satisfy
It may rock, it may roll but tell me
Whatever happened to the soul?

It's just murky, jerky groove
It motivates but it don't move
And all the pimps and funky divas
Crank out their empty testifying
They mixed it all in a bowl but then they
Forgot to add a pinch of soul

Tell me, whatever happened to the soul, brother?
Tell me, what did they do with the soul, brother?
Tell me, where did they go with the soul, brother?
Can I get a witness?

We're only here to entertain
And just pretend to be in pain
And if you wanna see me get down
Just watch me wave my hands around
It's a distraction I'm told, I use it
To hide my total lack of soul

Can't find a little bit of soul
Cause it's so hip to be a ho
And all the brothers act like crooks
And all the kids in the suburbs write the radio hooks

And if you want to be a star
Just grab your crotch and squeeze it hard
And make your mom and daddy proud
As you dry hump for the crowd
It may be tired and old, but then it's
Your only substitute for soul

Sometimes it's like someone took a knife, baby, edgy and dull
and cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my skull
At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet
and a freight train running though the middle of my head
and only you, can cool my desire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire

Some lyrics are haunting; this from Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle, from the album Verities and Balderdash:

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, Dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, Dad
I don't know when, but we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home, Dad
I don't know when, but we'll get together then
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son
I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day

I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin' home son
I don't know when, but we'll get together then, Dad
We're gonna have a good time then

"Once a fool had a good part in the play
If it's so would I still be here today
It's quite peculiar in a funny sort of way
They think it's very funny everything I say
Get a load of him, he's so insane
You better get your coat dear
It looks like rain..."
Elton John-Madman Across The Water

Tostadosunidos-I too heard Tom Rush sing that song (along with quite a few of Jackson Browne's songs) back in the 60s.  I kind of like his cover better than the original, though he did alter the words a little, if I recall.

"Don't wanna be a bum, you better chew gum

the pump don't work 'cause the vandals took the handles."

"Once a fool had a good part in the play
If it's so would I still be here today
It's quite peculiar in a funny sort of way
They think it's very funny everything I say
Get a load of him, he's so insane
You better get your coat dear
It looks like rain..."

I know where it's from...*S* ;)

I sit on the cornerstones
count the time in quarter tones till ten
my friend
please don’t confront me
with my failure..
I’m aware of them"
Actually, this could also be Gregg Allman-These Days
"these days I sit on cornerstones..."--that's Jackson Browne, "These Days."  I first heard Tom Rush sing that.

mofimadness, you got em’!

These lyrics just have a lot of meaning for me. Any day I can listen to good music is a good day. Something about Sundays I get in a more reflective mood. I can only assume since you seem to have immediately recognized these lyrics, they made an impression on you as well. This was kind of my reason for the thread.

"Laughing on the bus

She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy,
I said be careful
his bow tie is really a camera.."

"They gave me a useless education
and a sub-prime loan on a craftsman home
keep my prescription filled
and now I can’t get off
but I can kind of deal
with being"
Father John Misty-Bored In The USA

"Molly went to Arkansas
and got raped by Dobbin's dog
well she was doing good
till she went in the woods
and got pinned up against a log"
John Prine-Pretty Good

@slaw...you must be in a pretty dark mood  :-)

boxer12,
Kind of dark. Is it Greg Dulli?
How did the razor find my throat?
Hell is my wife's hometown (not true, funny though)

I don’t don’t recognize the line slaw, but I am reminded of a couple from my favorite, outside of Hank Williams, lyricist:

"You’re an idiot, babe, it’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe".

"We’re all idiots, babe, It’s a wonder we can even feed ourselves".

What I like most is Bob’s inclusion of himself by saying "we’re". I can think of a few other real smart songwriters (one in particular, who really had---R.I.P.---a superiority complex) who don’t and can’t think of themselves that way.

I have a few verses that have always stuck in my mind:

Neil Young from Old Man- "it doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you"

Moody Blues from After You Came-" we all can see what we shall be but knowing is not controlling"
