I don’t don’t recognize the line slaw, but I am reminded of a couple from my favorite, outside of Hank Williams, lyricist:
"You’re an idiot, babe, it’s a wonder that you still know how to breathe".
"We’re all idiots, babe, It’s a wonder we can even feed ourselves".
What I like most is Bob’s inclusion of himself by saying "we’re". I can think of a few other real smart songwriters (one in particular, who really had---R.I.P.---a superiority complex) who don’t and can’t think of themselves that way.
"Laughing on the bus playing games with the faces, She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy, I said be careful his bow tie is really a camera.."
"They gave me a useless education and a sub-prime loan on a craftsman home keep my prescription filled and now I can’t get off but I can kind of deal with being"

Simon & Garfunkel-America
"They gave me a useless education and a sub-prime loan on a craftsman home keep my prescription filled and now I can’t get off but I can kind of deal with being"
Father John Misty-Bored In The USA
"Molly went to Arkansas and got raped by Dobbin's dog well she was doing good till she went in the woods and got pinned up against a log"
These lyrics just have a lot of meaning for me. Any day I can listen to good music is a good day. Something about Sundays I get in a more reflective mood. I can only assume since you seem to have immediately recognized these lyrics, they made an impression on you as well. This was kind of my reason for the thread.
"Once a fool had a good part in the play If it's so would I still be here today It's quite peculiar in a funny sort of way They think it's very funny everything I say Get a load of him, he's so insane You better get your coat dear It looks like rain..."
Tostadosunidos-I too heard Tom Rush sing that song (along with quite a few of Jackson Browne's songs) back in the 60s. I kind of like his cover better than the original, though he did alter the words a little, if I recall.
"Don't wanna be a bum, you better chew gum
the pump don't work 'cause the vandals took the handles."
"Once a fool had a good part in the play If it's so would I still be here today It's quite peculiar in a funny sort of way They think it's very funny everything I say Get a load of him, he's so insane You better get your coat dear It looks like rain..."
And thecat's in the cradleandthe silver spoon Little boy blue and the man in the moon When you comin' home son I don't know when, but we'll get together then,Dad We're gonna have a good time then
Sometimes it's like someone took a knife, baby, edgy and dull and cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my skull At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet and a freight train running though the middle of my head and only you, can cool my desire Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
I didn't just pull into town This happened right before my eyes There's something missing in the sound That so used to satisfy It may rock, it may roll but tell me Whatever happened to the soul?
It's just murky, jerky groove It motivates but it don't move And all the pimps and funky divas Crank out their empty testifying They mixed it all in a bowl but then they Forgot to add a pinch of soul
Tell me, whatever happened to the soul, brother? Tell me, what did they do with the soul, brother? Tell me, where did they go with the soul, brother? Can I get a witness?
We're only here to entertain And just pretend to be in pain And if you wanna see me get down Just watch me wave my hands around It's a distraction I'm told, I use it To hide my total lack of soul
Can't find a little bit of soul Cause it's so hip to be a ho And all the brothers act like crooks And all the kids in the suburbs write the radio hooks
And if you want to be a star Just grab your crotch and squeeze it hard And make your mom and daddy proud As you dry hump for the crowd It may be tired and old, but then it's Your only substitute for soul
"your six blade knife can do anything for you anything you want it to one blade for breaking my heart one blade for tearing me apart you're six blade knife- do anything for you"
