The $10,000 Question
classdstreamer, I use Dynaudio speakers with a Rogue (Sphinx) tube/SS combo and have been pleased with the sound for years now.
Beatles CD box set
Don't the US versions have added reverb on the first few albums?  I know there were fewer songs per LP here and that there are a couple more albums in the full American set.  Through Revolver, at least, the stereo mixes were done with the US marke...
Volume levels
What about the music itself and the recording itself  Some music (I'm think classical music and acoustic jazz) has much more black space and dark gray, as it were, than pop in general.  Some recordings (and I'm thinking predominantly pop) squeeze ...
Do You Buy Speakers Without Hearing Them?
I bought without hearing either the speakers or other examples of the same model but I did listen to the two next/later examples of that size/type speaker made by the same company.  I liked the house sound, bought my speakers used, unseen and unhe...
Starting a Classical Vinyl Music Collection
+1 for the Deutsche Grammophon LPs.  They did a Beethoven Bicentennial Collection around 1970.  I think it's 17 boxed sets.  You can find the whole set or various pieces for sale used on the internet.  They also show up used at half-price book sto...
I took Frank Zappa’s advice
I thought that no EQ was a very popular notion in audiophilia.  My previous integrated amp had a button to defeat the treble and bass settings and my present IA does not have EQ knobs at all.  Isn't this common? also, What can I say about this e...
Anyone listen to Music on a FM tuner anymore?
I listen to the local classical music station through my main home system on a Denon Japanese tuner that's been worked over.  I prefer the sound of the tuner to the same signal streamed.  I listen to a variety of stations in the car.
What is your most fond musical memory.
sfar, I was at that Little Feat/Ronstadt show.  She played with accompaniment by Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, who were still hanging around town after their weekend shows.  Extremely thrown together and off the cuff.  Very good and v...
RIP Robbie Robertson
There are no better albums in the pop music realm than Music from Big Pink and The Band.  I am grateful to Robbie Robertson for his huge contribution to these two epic recordings and for many subsequent tracks.
What does it take to be a die hard Beatles fan?
The Beatles were masters of composing, arranging and producing records and George Martin was an important part of that machine.  If you listen to their finished-but-rejected versions of Norwegian Wood and Ob-la-di Ob-la-da you will know just what ...
RIP Jeff Beck
He was so different from most other guitarists.  He did so many things, devoid of effects pedals, that made you sit up and say, "how did he do that?" He really explored the sound of the instrument.  His work with the Yardbirds and his Truth album ...
Best Examples Of Cymbal Decays On A Recording
There are CD's of gongs and other percussion instruments used for meditation that might be what you are looking for.  There is a gong struck at the beginning of the song "Birds of Fire" by the Mahavishnu Orchestra but I can't vouch for the length ...
Why does rock concert sound suck?
wolf-garcia, I accept that you know more about this area than I. But when I was playing that’s what I experienced--standing around while the drums and bass were done first, and pushed to a high volume.  I won't say we never had good sound in the e...
Why does rock concert sound suck?
Sound men start with the drums, getting a great-but-too-loud sound from the kit.  Then they do the same with the bass.  After that there's nowhere for the higher pitched instruments and vocals to exist.  And it all sounds like crap. My wife and I...
