Your ONE all time favorite love song?

For me it's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack, from her CD "Softly with These Songs, the Best of Roberta Flack", on Atlantic. I'm looking for LOVE SONGS. Thanks and Cheers. Craig

Well ... the more I listen to it, the more I like Neil Young's "Harvest Moon". A long-time companion song if there ever was one (20 years and still working on it myself). And if you can't envision yourself swaying in someone's arms to the music, well ... I pity your lack of imagination.

"Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
Just like children sleepin'
We could dream this night away.

But there's a full moon risin'
Let's go dancin' in the light
We know where the music's playin'
Let's go out and feel the night.

Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon.

When we were strangers
I watched you from afar
When we were lovers
I loved you with all my heart.

But now it's gettin' late
And the moon is climbin' high
I want to celebrate
See it shinin' in your eye.

Because I'm still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I'm still in love with you
On this harvest moon."
Regiolanthe,
You just may have hit on one of the finest love songs of all time. I never get sick of hearing Neil Young sing that song. That one and "Cowgirl In The Sand"
Slipknot1,

In response to Excitable Boy, I do have to say that Warren Z did put out some pretty romantic tunes in his own fashion. I rarely pull my vinyl Warren - but I did a few months ago - and played his major debut "Warren Zevon". "Backs Turned Looking Down the Path", "Hasten Down the Wind", and "Carmelita" are all songs worthy of any romantic troubadour, even if the romance is a little flawed! I can't say that I paid much attention to his later offerings (although my beautiful wife bought "My Ride's Here" a few years ago so that I could add a "Z" to the CD collection), and it's nice to see him get some belated acclaim.
You might think it really cheesy, and somewhat overplayed in its day, but "Everything I own" by Bread was actually written by David Gates for his late father (who died when he was young). With this in mind I think it's an incredibly moving song.
Wow, it's really hard to narrow it down to just one song. I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned, but I'll have to go with Al Green's "Let's stay together".
Regiolanthe,
I was hoping someone would pick up on the tongue-and-cheek nature of "Excitable Boy", given the rather dark nature of the lyric. Thanks for catching it. ;)
Everly Bros./Let It Be Me. Guess it was a French song first but never heard it in French.
led zep - "thank you"

If the sun refused to shine,
i would still be loving you
When mountains crumble to the sea,
there will still be you and me
Okay ... my second ONE all time favorite love song (brought to mind from thread on intelligent lyrics) ...

Billy Bragg - The Fourteenth of February (from William Bloke):

I wish that I could remember the first moment that we met
If only I could remember that sweet moment when we met
If I knew then that I
Would spend the rest of my life with you
I imagine I would have held your gaze a little longer
When first our eyes met

Did it rain or did sunshine attend out first meeting?
What words were said? What weight given to that first greeting?
My diary doesn't help
I don't even mention your name until that summer
When bloomed the
Seed sown on the first day that we met

I know the date, I know the place where in happened
Yet in my mind the scene I recall is imagined
As we grow old I'm sure
There will be moments that we will not forget
But I would
Remember something of the moment that we met
"Pale blue eyes" by Lou Reed.
or "Come back" by Misfits. C'mon, when Danzig writes a love song, you know its for real. :))))

Puff the Magic Dragon- PP&M

Cyndi Lauper- True Colors

Wow, this was much harder to narrow down than I thought!

Without You- Motley Crue

I'll Be There For You- Bon Jovi
When I'm With You- Sheriff

"I Love You" by the Climax Blues Band would get my vote, from a song appreciation perspective. There are some other great suggestions. My wife and I picked a bit more energetic song as "our song" - "Suck My Kiss" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was her choice, and let me tell you, it brings a smile to my face every time!

Tom.
These arms of Mine Otis Redding
Runner up is Led Zeps Since i been loving You imho.

"In My Life" by The Beatles, (Lennon/McCartney), first released on Rubber Soul, Dec 3, 1965.

One of my favorites, although it's a bit sad to me since John's assassination.

I love all the old standards. "Someone To Watch Over Me" is a pretty good one. But then I am a nut for Gershwin, too.
"Forty Five Years" by Stan Rogers, from the album "Fogarty's Cove". Never fails to lump my throat.
Burt Bacharach:This guy's in love with you. Any of his love songs from the 60's and 70's hit home.
"Fallen" by Lauren Wood (pretty woman soundtrack)
"How Deep is Your Love" by Bee Gees
"Waiting for a Girl Like You" by Foreigner
"Sad Eyes" by Enrique Iglesias
Since she dumped me last night I feel like 'This is not a love song' by PIL.
Most moving but terrible sonics from Van Morrison's live version of "Caravan" from its "Too Late to Stop Now"
Don't have a single favorite, but "Cry Like a Rainy Day", Etta James, is awful good. It's on "Love's Been Rough on Me", a very great album.
Well, if held to one choice, it would have to be Art Garfunkel's "I Believe (When I Fall In Love With You It Will Be Forever.)" My wife and I fell in love to it, had it played at our wedding, and 25+ years later it still works.

But if I can cheat and a couple more, they would be Van Morrison "Tupelo Honey," Buddy Holly "True Love Ways" and Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" (which in addition to Joni's incredible original version has been covered superbly by both k.d.lang and Diana Krall).

Gotta go, feeling frisky now ... :-)
Thought I revive this thread and post a more recent "Love" song which I 'm currently spinning more than anything else at this time :-))...........
Michael Buble's "HOME".
Don't know if it's my one all time favorite but it is the first to come to mind.
Chris Whitleys, Look What Love Has Done.

Can't pick just one. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".
Johhny's Cash's rendition is something to behold. It's on
"American IV: The Man Comes Around", his last recording.
"True Companion" from Mark Cohen's debut album.
One would be tough; categorically, though:

Old songs:
"Chances Are" - Johnny Mathis

"New" songs:
"Somewhere, Somehow" - Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant

The "I'd never believe they'd write a love song, much less a good one" category:
"Different Strings" - Rush
"At this Moment"--Billy Vera and the Beaters, "To Make You Feel My Love"--Bob Dylan or Garth Brooks, "Color My World"-Chicago, "I Will Always Love You"--Dolly Parton
There's a whole story behind this song, but let's say its a true gut felt love song he wrote for Susannah, Wendy Melvoins twin sister.

Its his best. What a climax.

Off of Sign "O" The Times (1987) which is overdue for a remaster. Vinyl is waaaay better if you can get your hands on that record, worth a spin for beyond Purple Rain appreciation.
What about Foreigners "I want to know what love is", Nazareth "Love hurts" is great, and so is Metallica "nothing else matters" :o)
