You can only take 5 albums to a deserted Island...

But there is a world class system there for your use.  Leaving many favorites behind but I must have:

Yes - Close to the Edge
Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet
Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs
Neil Young - Everybody Knows this is Nowhere
John Lee Hooker - Mr. Lucky

pops
If I was forced to grab 5 it wouldn't be something I know. I have those feelings and memories implanted. I think it would be some classical music I've only dip my toe into  and hope I chose wisely and I don't hate it. But just in case Id try and snatch a diamond of a Jerry Garcia Band show, and pray it wasn't a snoozy noodle fest.  He always played great covers of all kinds of essential stuff snd covered the gamut from ballads, jams from heaven, reggae, bluegrass, timeless Hunter-Garcia collaborations. Honestly though a desert island would be music enough, sweet sounds. If I was given a choice between music or a surfboard though that would be tough, but with push come to shove, no contest. I'd leave the classical and grab my 7'2 Pendoflex.

Gotta have some variation for my 5:

1)  Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
2)  Norah Jones - Wish You Were Here
3)  Miles David - Kind of Blue
4)  Bach's Cello Suites - Janos Starker
5)  AC/DC - Back in Black

Ginger and Mary Ann would improve this whole hypothetical scenario thing, as well!

Here are my 5 in no particular order:

1) Beatles - Rubber Soul

2) Beatles - White Album

3) Rolling Stones - Beggar's Banquet

4) U2 - Joshua Tree

5) Derek & the Dominos - Layla

First substitute (#5b): Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited

Once we all get to the Desert Island, this island will be nicely stuffed with music!!!    :-)
DANVIGNAU, thank you for flushing PF fans out of the closet, because I was a bit worried what is happening here. So, while we all On The Island, here is the list of my 5 Must-Haves which I see missing from the collection:
1) Tchaikovsky's 5th under Mravinsky
2) Bruckner's 8th under Celibidache
3) Dead Can Dance box set
4) Cocteau Twins box set
5) Klaus Schulze Mini-LP CD box set
Some other painful (for me) omissions on this thread here are:
6) Porcupine Tree
7) quite a few must have or "We Must Die" from ECM label, starting with "Khmer".  Those who ever loved Miles must give it a listen!
8) Tubular Bells (!!!)
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Led Zeppelin - II
Dire Straits - Brother in Arms
ZAZ - Recto Verso
Pink Floyd - The Division Bell

And I'm thinking Ginger, Mary Ann and I will dance, play, and whatever depending on the mood created by the music you are playing.

Well, Thom, if we’re taking five guitars and/or amps instead of albums, I’ll play:

James Goodall Dreadnaught
Schroeder Chopper (LP style)
Tom Bills "Falling Leaf" archtop
Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister 36 amp
Fractal Axe effects processor

I’m borrowing your strings and plugging into your AC.

Note bene:

1) The H&K may not be the best sounding amp ever, but it is very good sounding and crazy versatile - pretty important for this particular gig, I’d say.

2) I don’t own the Fractal Axe system due to its complexity. However, I gotta figure that there’s gonna be sufficient time on the island to figure it out.

thom_mackris, Are you suggesting, you'd rather listen to yourself playing for infinity, as opposed to having other music available? Just asking.
My Martin HD-28
One of my Telecasters
One guitar amplifier (likely a modified Princeton Reverb)
A large box of strings
A source of AC power ;-)

Thom @ Galibier Design
Zappa- All the desert box set😜
Zep- 1& 2
Who-Tommy remastered SACD
Pink Floyd - Dark side of the moon
Copland Fanfare for the common man-Copland conducts Copland
The Doors La women
The Stones get yer ya ya's out

This would be a sad day for me.  I don't like three hour tours because it makes me choose so little music.
Miles Davis "Kind of Blue"  Beatles:" Sgt. Pepper"   Bob Dylan ''Greatest Hits" Al Green "Call Me" Magic Sam "West Side Soul"        I always come back to these albums. I am always amazed I find something new or different? Yet, I always have a "Good Time Feel"  every time I listen! Marvin Gaye " What's Goin On" is my Alternate.

Though "audiophiles" are viewed as caring more about the sound of their systems than the music playing on it, ya’ll prove that is absolutely not true. Great, great music listed here. Since this is a separate post, I get to list five more ;-) :

- Beethoven: Symphonies boxset, Gunter Wand conducting

- Iris Dement: My Life

- Buddy Miller: Your Love And Other Lies

- The Beach Boys: collection containing "God Only Knows", "Don’t Worry Baby", "Til I Die", "Here Comes The Night", "Heroes & Villains", and a couple dozen more songs

Have to jump in somewhere, so here goes:

Bee Thousand - Guided by Voices
Bewitched - Luna
Music from Big Pink - The Band
Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin

This is an impossible task really but those are the 5 I'd take today. Tomorrow could be a whole different story!
I always find it interesting that there is typically little soul/funk/R&B to be found on these type of threads.

I grew up in the late '60s and '70s, and, while that period was obviously golden for Rock, I found black popular music to be more compelling. So, in that particular vein, I'd take these (and many more, if possible):

Open Our Eyes – Earth Wind and Fire

That's the Way of the World – Earth Wind and Fire

Tower of Power – Tower of Power

Back to Oakland – Tower of Power

Live in New Orleans – Maze, Featuring Frankie Beverly

      ^ these five if pressed

All Day Music – War

Wild and Peaceful – Kool and the Gang

Flood – Herbie Hancock

City Life / Unfinished Business – The Blackbirds
In order to live with myself I chose an album from each decade starting in the 60’s

1. Beatles abbey rd
2. Pink Floyd wish you were here
3. U2 Joshua tree
4. Radiohead - OK computer
5. Led zep II

I know 2 (led zep and Beatles)are in 60’s but my rules and by luck I find a buried treasure of r.e.m. document and the replacements -pleased to meet me. With dreams of rolling stones on the beach and (the) who will find me but none other the police in (the) cars
The-Dream: Love/Hate
Tears For Fears: Songs From The Big Chair
Joni Mitchell: Blue
Jack Johnson: Sleep Through The Static
Miles Davis: Kind of Blue

p.s. picking 5 for any music lover should induce a cringe - only 5?? Deserted island? How lucky we are that we're NOT actually on a deserted island! (no offense to the two Audiogon'ers that actually are on a deserted island).
The Verve, Storm in Heaven
Roxy Music, Avalon
Duran Duran, Rio
Tycho, Dive

Already changed my mind:

1- "How to play the guitar" and a guitar.

2- "Aqualung Live" and a flute.

3- "Live at Montreux" with Dianna Krall,  Mayard F and a trumpet.

If it was a 'world class system' it'd have access to stream-casting, Spotify, et all.  And it'd have to be one hell of well appointed 'deserted island' to be able to support and maintain said system...which I'd hack Something building a raft to take my chances leaving....

Because 5 albums of Anything, played endlessly, would eventually turn to trash, as would your sanity.  And I don't own any album that I like everything on it, anyway...

I'm allergic to civilization of late, but not That allergic. ;)  Even if the soccer ball had a larger than average 'air intake'. *L*  And 'Wilson' better not complain or get a 'headache'. *smirk*
Richard Thompson - Two Letter Words
Fleetwood Mac - Say You Will
Los Lobos - How Will The Wolf Survive
Rosanne Cash - The List
Rockpile - Seconds of Pleasure

Id be pissed at myself pretty quickly, but that would be true of any five I chose.
1. La Spagna, BIS
2. Cantate Domino, Proprius
3. Laudate, Proprius
4. Hearing Solar Winds, Ocora
5. Wagner's Ring, Telefunken

All vinyl.

1- J.S. Bach: just one?

2- Mozart: Late Symphonies (a boxset can count as one, right?)

3- The Band: Music From Big Pink & s/t (you really need both to get the complete picture)

4- Dave Edmunds: Get It

5- The Dwight Twilley Band: Sincerely

1) The Band, The Last Waltz 2) Van Morrison, It's Too Late To Stop Now 3) The Quess Who, American Woman 4) Little Feat, Waiting On Columbus 5) Allman Brothers, Live At The Filmore.

My five, for today, will be:

Stravinsky's Firebird (Complete), Dorati/LSO, Mercury SR 90226, in the 45rpm Classic Records reissue
Prokofiev's  Lt. Kije, Reiner/CSO, RCA LSC 2150, in the 45rpm Classic Records reissue
Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, Reiner/CSO, RCA LSC 1934, in the Analog Productions reissue
Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio Espagnol, Argenta/LSO, London CS 6006, in the 45rpm ORG reissue
La Spagna, Paniagua/Atrium Musica de Madrid, BIS LP 163/164

Tomorrow's list might be all chamber music, but today I'm in a symphonic mood.
Almarg, very nice selections. I'll have to give this a bit of thought before offering just five.
We did something like that a few times, yeah. Let's do instead one desert island recording.
For me that would be Bitches Brew by Miles Davis.
Steely Dan-Gaucho
Steely Dan-The Royal Scam
The Eagles-The Long Run
Elton John-Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
The Beatles-Rubber Soul
Brahms, Symphony No. 1
Chopin, Piano Sonata No. 3
Dvorak, New World Symphony
Prokofiev, Classical Symphony
Schubert, String Quintet in C Major

The recordings of the Brahms and Dvorak works I would take would be the Chesky re-issues on CD of 1960s performances conducted by Jascha Horenstein. The Chopin I would take would be either the Wilson Audio recording of a performance by Hyperion Knight, on vinyl if I could find it (I have the CD), or the performance by Edward Auer on an RCA Japan direct-to-disc LP. I’d have to think about which recording of the other works I would take, and perhaps it would be one that I don't yet have.

Regards,
-- Al

Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
CSN&Y - 4 Way Street
Mozart - 'Le Nozze di Figaro' Rene Jacobs (conductor)/ Harmonia Mundi
