John Hunter - "Famous at Night" 1984 calling! It’s straight ’80’s pop rock, heavy on the synthesizer. But, I must say, this is about as good of sound quality as you’ll find with this kind of music. Don’t recall when/why I bought this back in 1984. I do recall the single "Tragedy" getting airplay on the local radio station back at the time. I also remember hearing "Sad Songs on the Radio" getting airplay. I’m doing a pretty deep cull of my collection. But I think I’ll keep this one as the SQ is so good, it is so representative of the period of time and it likely has no value as a sell/trade item. Back on the shelf it goes, to be revisited again in 10-20 years... |
Noticed your question to @slaw on the SQ of the Colvin & Earle Fantasy Records album and for my own curiosity did a comparison of my copy to digital. I purchased the album shortly after it was released so could possibly be a different pressing than what slaw just received. I streamed the album on Amazon which has a decent 24/96 hi-res offering and compared the vinyl copy in real time switching back and forth between the two sources. The vinyl copy sounds real nice as I have always thought and is definitely warmer than the digital version as expected. But, the highs on the digital version sounded more crisp and forward. The acoustic guitars and voices sounded somewhat more crisp but not excessive. Bass sounded similar on both versions. At least on that listening I preferred the digital version. Also, Steve Earle recorded on even his earliest albums digitally so can't say if this album was recorded initially in analog or digital. The report you get from slaw could be completely the opposite based on the different systems and slaw most likely has a much more technically audiophile ear than mine. For what it's worth there you go.

@bslon - Thank you for the comment. I find that sometimes an explanation or comment is needed/helpful. And sometimes it's not. For instance: A comment about John Hunter - "Famous at Night" might be warranted. A comment about The Who - "Who's Next" may not be... It's all about sharing the music Brother! Keep 'em coming... |
Plastics “s/t” Island 1981 This is not a rerelease of Japanese recordings but separate recordings done at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas in 1980 and mastered to the vinyl format by Ted Jensen at Sterling. Quite a different sound from their earlier Invitation Japan records. Island took a big chance. It didn’t pay off. Garlic Boys “King Of Smell” Alchemy Japan 1989 Garlics were a punk band from Osaka and well known in Japan. They were together and doing shows until 1997. Zoviet France “The End Of Nothing, The Beginning Of Everything” Vinyl On Demand Germany 2020 (45 rpm DMM, done by Pauler Acoustic in Northeim, Germany but I’m not sure I like it, rather thin and anemic sound) Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her “Give Them Back To Me” Hate It, Damn It Records Japan 1995

@dredison - "Meddle" pre-dates my early music discovery days by just a few years. Was still in elementary school when it was released. "Dark Side of the Moon" was popular on the radio during my early high-school years, and "Animals" come out during my late high school years. By then, I was all-in on Pink Floyd... BTW, I love "Fearless". Great song. Happy Weekend to You, and All... |
@alexberger Nice 604s. I've enjoyed your YouTube channel previously. |
@tgilb Thanks so much for detailed and well thought out evaluation of the Colvin / Earle collaboration. I like to think i have invested in decent analog LP, digital and high speed tape gear to discern relative strengths and weaknesses, but i appreciate the input..especially prior to investing in the LP. …many, many thanks Jim |
Steve - Yes night before last, got home late yesterday so i missed her live stream w Q and A, hopefully they archived it. I have it on again now and am impressed with it. I like the tone, rhythm and departure from pure Americana. First track has some impressive low end grunt. My white vinyl pressing is super quiet over 95% or better… Super enjoyable. I see available also on Tidal. Jim |
Oingo Boingo - Only A Lad Very early pp I have had since it first was released. Not many plays on it, perfect condition. Danny Elfman is a genius! Once - A movie soundtrack, I think the only movie soundtrack that I own. However, this one isn't worth keeping, a real dud. The best thing about the album is the picture of the actress, Marta Kristen, on the back cover. Marta was best known as Judy, on the 60s TV program, Lost In Space. She is a beautiful girl. Pink Floyd - Meddle Mentioned several times here on the thread so I had to play it. My copy is a Pink Floyd Records reissue. They did a superb job with this. |
