Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1
@tomic601 Thanks Jim!  I've got all the parts, just can't set anything up due to house selling and the packing that will have to happen once someone pulls the trigger to buy. Unfortunately will just be on computer speakers and eventually a UE boom Bluetooth speaker until I get a new house. It's torture walking by my new DHT preamp every day and not being able to listen to it.

(P.S. Apologies if I called you Tom at some point, feels like I might have at some point.)

@spiritofradio, many thanks for your kind words a couple of pages back. I definitely have some catching up to do…

For me; this is a “desert island” pick:

Bobby King / Terry Evans

“Live and Let Live”

1988 Rounder Records

Produced by Ry Cooder

It’s hard to imagine this was pressed during the first decade of “perfect sound forever.”

Diane Schuur & The Count Basie Orchestra.  I have a couple of her records that I bought a few years ago and didn't really "get into" them at the time.  I am working on culling some records and wanted to play them first and surprise, I really enjoyed them both, especially this one.  The big band swing is a lot of fun and this is a nice sounding recording.  Funny how our tastes can change.
Good news on my Patricia Barber Cafe' Blue Impex 1Step, Elusive Sound contacted me today and they are sending a replacement.
@big_greg  Just yesterday I received my copy of Cafe' Blue Impex 1-Step, also purchased from Elusive.  I have not yet played it.  Is there something I should be aware of and looking (listening) for that would warrant a replacement?  Please let me know.
Thank you.
@tubegb You’re very welcome.  Keep ‘em coming.
BTW, name of a frequent poster here @reubent is Tom which may have led to the mixup

@big_greg, re: Diane Schuur & Count Basie.  Streamed it and Wow, it does sound good.  Dynamic live sound.  Will indeed suit a certain mood/attitude.     Thanks for posting.
Eydie Gormé ‎– Softly, As I Leave You (Columbia 1966 mono)

Big voice and full sound. The epitome of analog mono.
Diane Schuur & The Count Basie Orchestra

@big_greg  Yup. Welcome to my world!
Judy Bright ‎- This is Judy Bright
(Dot 1964)

Truly lovely voice and left-of-center music. She’s from Chicago and released one album in 1964 at the age of 20. She was fluent in five languages and incorporated the songs of other cultures into her mixed repertoire. Shame she didn’t record more. Tentative recommendation.
Ewan MacColl With Peggy Seeger ‎- Classic Scots Ballads (Tradition 1959)

Historic. Soothing as a wee dram.
@mammothguy54 Mine had a small spot of a hard white plastic like substance stuck on one side.
The Mary Kaye Trio ‎– Night Life (20th Century Fox 1964 mono)

Fender released the "Mary Kaye" Stratocaster from 1958.
She's known as the “First Lady of Rock and Roll” for her guitar-driven, calypso-tinged, swing music back in the day.
Ella Fitzgerald ‎– Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Gershwin Song Book Vol. 1 (Verve 1959 mono)
Side 2

Art Hodes ‎– Sittin' In - Volume I (Blue Note 1969)
@tomic601  I kissed Natalie Merchant on the cheek. It was all she'd allow.
So far this evening, JSB Die Kunst der Fuge,  BWV 1080, Herbert Tachezi, organ and  Favorite Baroque oboe concertos, Pierre Pierre, oboe, I Solisti Veneti, Claudio Simon, conductor.
By the way, on Monday I traded in my Pro-ject Debut Carbon for a Rega Planar 8 and what a difference!
@tomic601 I actually have that album of hers. It's an import and goes well with beets and bolsheviks.

In all seriousness, she def is a gem of an artist.
@spiritofradioThasnks for checking it out.
When I said that is is one of the best Recordings that I have heard.
I did not mean The most intimate ,close miked 3d sound , like most people would look for  or like to hear, what I meant was that it was well Engineered to sound damn good, If you Turn IT up  kinda Loud.
The  album begs you to Crank it up a bit .
The way it was recorded, you can hear a lot of detailed, spatial  sound and little percussion type instruments and very unique sounds coming from different spaces and still has Killer Deep bass and it is never overwhelming. You just feel like it wraps around you .and you are in the sound mix .
If nothing else , It is Totally Unique and Interesting. It will put a smile on OH and BTW my Vinyl copy was a little noisy in a couple spots ,so I bought the last Mint copy on Discogs. for $80 a month or 2 ago ,but keep your eyes open..
I think that it is much better on Vinyl than Cd ... i own both

@gardners501  That is a wonderful turntable.  Congrats and do enjoy it.

Neil Young  S/T  What a great album.  The Loner, The Old Laughing Lady, and so many other greats on that album.

Procol Harum  "A Salty Dog"  I say them in concert only once, I believe that was in 1972.  Love Gary Brooker vocals.

Jeff Beck  "Truth"  Rod Stewart was at his best, IMO, when he was with Beck on this album.
@big_greg  Thank you for the information.  I will inspect both discs very closely before playing.  I'm reserving Saturday night for the first play of Cafe' Blue.  Late in the evening, a couple glasses of wine, should be perfect!
@grey9hound Agree, and I don’t doubt it sounds better on vinyl, my own belief is that almost everything does if it’s pressed from a legitimate vinyl master, even if digitally recorded. I don’t understand it completely but it is my experience.
I heard the great deep bass and a lot of the production effects you write about and the recording is very cool. Unique really. Have to say though that I’ve never heard a record (it was on most of it not just one song) where the LR channel balance oscillated back and forth as fast as reverb. The success of that (unusual) effect might be system dependent. Cool record. Great musicians. And I agree, really interesting, unique, and good recording.

Just out of curiosity, do you know the Toureg stuff by +10:1 Tinariwen? If not you might like it. I’ve really been digging it lately. Maybe start with: Elwan.
Thanks again for turning us on to something new.

What it is.

I’m With Her
See You Around

Berg • Beethoven
Violin Concertos
Orchestra Mozart
Isabelle Faust, Violin
Claudio Abbado, Conductor
Harmonia Mundi (Japan) 2012/2018

Very Nice, won lots of awards and was on lots of best lists and it’s obvious why. Unprecedented dynamics.  If I knew what I was talking about I might say the Beethoven is like an arrangement by Vaughan Williams.

@gardners501. Does your RP8 still have the Elys MM cartridge? I have an RP8 as well to complement my VPI. And that Elys puts out something like 7 millivolts. Wasn't quite ready for that.
Beethoven
Violin Concerto in D Major, Opus 61
Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam
Conducted by Sir Colin Davis
Arthur Grumiaux, Soloist
From the Phillips Catalogue 1981 Reissue

Will check out Gob Iron again Steve.  I’ve been playing CDs and Streaming for a couple of hours anyway while cleaning new arrivals.

Even if you’re not that into coral music (which I am generally not) if you’re in a contemplative or particularly reverent state of mind this is truly something.  John Atkinson of Stereophile helped engineer this.  Worth it just for the incredible sound achievement but the music is also incredibly good.  Very moving, even on this, my fifth, listen.

In the process of obtaining more of Joni’s earlier albums on vinyl. Two more arrived today. First up....

Joni Mitchell - For the Roses. Asylum reissue 1974, originally 1972
#2 to arrive today...

Joni Mitchell - Hejira. Asylum 1976

Magical. Jaco’s first with Joni. He added so much to this and her next 3 albums.
