Had planned a final Christmas music vinyl night but was not feelin’ it tonight. I had 6 strong recordings ready including one of my favorite Xmas recordings John Denver-Rocky Mountain Christmas which I listened to on Youtube. Maybe will spin it next month? What a longshot Jane Morgan-Fascination being spun on the same night! |

@noromance Just picked up Jane Morgan/Fascination at Goodwill a couple weeks ago. The stereo version KS 3017 was released later then 57' 1961? The condition is VG+ at best, SQ was better then expected. IMO her voice reminds me of Doris Day with a Jazz edge. FWIW she is still here on Earth at age 96! |

Joe Walsh - But Seriously Folks...
This was a Japan pressing that I picked up recently. When I put on side 1 and heard almost no noise and great sound quality I was really excited, but a little disappointed when I got to side 2 (the side with Life's Been Good) and there was noticeably more noise, although still a high VG+, close to NM-. Apparently that side has been played a lot more than side one. Still a great listen. |
Jan Sibelius Symphony No. 2 in D Sir John Barbirolli conducting London’s Royal Philharmonic in 1964 While Smoking a Cigarette
From the Mono RCA Big Box Readers Digest Treasury of Great Music
I am kind of amazed by this. Great music of course, a favorite since I was a little kid, but this mono record is filling the room with beauty, precision, and splendor. I’m only using the Hana SL, not a mono cartridge. Instruments and sections are distinctly separated, the whole room is a pressurized soundstage, and most incredible is that it’s playing only at 45 db. on my meter here on a quiet morning with Grey’s Anatomy working in the other room. I love my stereo. |
Dr. Richard Strauss Don Juan Rudolf Kempe and the RP
from the same box
I always thought of Richard Strauss as dorky but I guess in my old age I’m becoming more of a music dork myself and am really enjoying this. I find myself wondering if it would be possible to get through all 13 records in this box before feeling the need to put on some UFO... |
Respighi The Pines of Rome Rudolf Kempe and the RP
what do your speakers do with 16’ and 32’ organ pedal tones....? Hmmmmm. Also, there are birds. |
I file my LPs alphabetically and play them in that order. Tonight is: Bach- Fantasia and Fugue in C minor EMI MFSL HSM Joan Baez- Diamonds and Rust, Nautilus SD HSM Boston- Boston, Epic CBS HSM Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie 180g 2017 release (excellent) Judy Collins- Judith, Electra SD HSM Rita Coolidge- Anytime...Anywhere, Nautilus SD HSM
Can someone explain to me the advantage of 45 RPM? How can moving the groove past the stylus faster giving the stylus less time to track the groove result in better sound? I don't get it.

Georges Bizet Symphony No. 1 in C Charles Munch and the RP
Bizet’s first symphony and certainly one of my favorite pieces of ballet music. I was lucky enough to see the ballet of the same name, made by Balanchine, at ABT in New York during the Regan years.
So, what were you doing at age 17? Bizet made this for a school project.
This 1964 record doesn’t have a pop click or any surface noise at all. Sweet sweet sweet. |
Art Blakey Moanin’ Blue Note (reissue)
Say, has anyone purchased a Music Matters SRX issue of this or any other SRX title? I’m interested in hearing actual listener opinions about them. I mean 80 bucks for a new record... are they as good as the Mofi one steps? |
Albert King Blues for Elvis King Does the King’s Things Stax (80’s reissue of a 1969? Curiosity)
whoa! This will get your blood flowing baby. |
Been listening to my hi-fi, of course. Just not listing the LPs here for a while. Yesterday was a few nice ones.
Joni Mitchel, 'Blue' Reprise Records reissue. Nicely done! The Beach Boys, 'Surf's Up' Analog Productions and QRP pressing. Excellent SQ! Stanley Clarke, 'School Days' Friday Music reissue, RTI pressing. I have an original pressing of this album and while the SQ is great the vinyl quality had a lot of noise. It's a favorite of mine, so, I pre-ordered the reissue and it finally arrived. The vinyl is excellent and SQ is really, really good. I think the mastering found some fine details that I had never heard before on my original pressing. But, I also found that in the mastering they cut off some of the lowest frequencies in a few musical areas that are present on my original. Too bad for that. Otherwise, the SQ is superb and very revealing of the finest in detail with perfect placement (not too far forward, not far back, just right!). If you are a Stanley Clark fan this is a very worthy add to your collection. |

@spiritofradio: I don’t know if you got this pressing of the Albert King Elvis album, but there is one offered by reissue company Vinyl Me Please that is reportedly great. I just ordered my copy a coupla days ago from a seller on Discogs. @mammothguy54: For another great Analogue Productions Beach Boys reissue, consider the Sunflower album. I can’t tell you what a breathe of fresh air it was when it came out in August of 1970. A welcome reprieve from all the Metal, Blues/Rock, and Progressive/Rock sludge that was big at the time. Listen to the insanely great chord progression Brian Wilson incorporates into "This Whole World". As good as some Classical compositions! If I remember correctly, he was listening to a lot of J.S. Bach at the time. As in some Bach works, the chords in "TWW" are just flying by, in some parts four per bar! |
Thanks @bdp24 I saw that on VMP and it prompted me to pull my old one out. Don’t really feel I need to get the new one although I’m sure the pressing is great. |
You guys got me thinking about that Albert King album. I don't see a reissue from Vinyl Me Please but I do see a NM/M- copy on a Stax reissue. Thanks for the good idea. |
Scott - no question is bad, 45 w perhaps only 2 - 3 songs per side can be cut w more groove spacing and less limiting.

@geof3 Yes indeed, those albums are mastered exceptionally well. I especially think that of Avalon. Sit in the sweet spot, plenty of SPL, and just fall into the music. It takes you on a trip...
