Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1
It's turning into Monovember for me.

Oboen-Konzerte, by Handel, Telemann, Dittersdorf; Philips A 02233 L .
Opened a still sealed copy of Yo-Yo Ma playing Dvorak: Cello Concerto, a CBS Records Masterworks release. A visual check shows the record in excellent condition. After a thorough cleaning, side one sounded like it had been abused for decades, side two wasn't the best, either. I hate when that happens!
It has been a Dead Can Dance morning and afternoon. Now that it's supper time on the East coast, we have some Anoushka Shankar playing. I was working outside all day and I just pounded a vodka and soda. I have a feeling there's going to be some Talking Heads spinning this evening and I will not be sitting down for it. Ahhhhh, to not be young!!!
Detour. Just started 73 minutes of Joao Gilberto o amor, o sorriso e a flor (love, a smile and a flower). Great dinner music. This empty nester business is very rewarding. Dogs are great.

So far Nine Inch Nails 'Hesitation Marks' and Dead Can Dance 'Toward the Within'. Probably up next will be Death cab for Cutie 'We have the facts and we're voting yes".

I absolutely love this Dead Can Dance. It's not background music for sure.
Wolfgang [Arc]amadeus Mozart Concertos for Clarinet, Flute & Harp by the Wiener Philharmoniker.
Mozart Piano Concerto #18, Murray Perahia, ECO. wonderful performance and beautiful vinyl.
Dylan - Blond on Blond - 45 rpm reissue from MFSL. I'm impressed with the sonics of this reissue. I'd been hearing a fair number of negative comments, but in my system and to my ears this is a terrific release.

Roy Gaines - I got the T-Bone Walker Blues - if you love the blues, you'll love this release by Roy Gaines from Groove Note Records. Four sides of 45 rpm goodness.

Poulenc - Gloria | Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani - Pretre/French National Radio Orchestra, Rosanna Carteri-soprano, Maurice Durufle-organist - EMI ASD 2835 - my favorite recording of both the Gloria and the Organ Concerto. Pretre captures this music superbly. Perhaps not the greatest recording sonically (a demonstrate disc when recorded in 1961 but not up to the best-of-the-best standards for today), but the EMI engineering is still very acceptable. Play it and fall in love with the huge French organ of Saint Etienne du Mont and the playing of Durufle.
First time in 6 months I've had the table working, in a new room, with all new gear. Pretty happy so far:

Big Star - No 1 Record

Pearl Jam - 10 (new pressing)

Sade - Promise

Black Keys - El Camino

Stone Temple Pilots - Core (new 180g) AWESOME

Heart - Dreamboat Annie

Led Zeppelin - II (1st Japanese Pressing)

Anita Baker - Rapture (crappy copy, but what a voice)

no Magnepan's is odd, but the Harbeth's with Cary/Audio Research in a small room is wonderful so far.
Schubert Trout quintet, live recording of Serkin et al at Marlboro Festival, beautiful recording of an exciting performance.
Brahms 3rd by Wand and the NDR,
Clouds in my Head, Arild Andersen on ECM
Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas - Fantasy 8431 (45rpm reissue from Analogue Productions)(Oh yes, it sounds really good, too.)

Doug MacLeod - There's a Time - Reference Recordings - 45rpm (Very enjoyable blues!)

Charles Mingus - Ah Um - ORG/Columbia 45rpm

Bill Evans - Waltz for Debbie - Riverside 9399 (Analogue Productions 33rpm reissue)
.
Basie Live at the Sands - Mofi. it is very well done.
Ella and Louis 45 rpm from analog productions

Glass of red and great music!!!!!!
A friend's question about what I've heard in 2013 that I found special caused me to have to reflect a bit. My reply to him was that the two recent Yarlung recordings were very nicely recorded:
Petteri Ilvonen - Art Of The Violin/Yarlung
Antonio Lysy - At The Broad-Music From Argentina/Yarlung
But the LP that impressed me the most was a used record from Ars Nova: an early pressing of Ivan Moravec playing Chopin Nocturns. I've had this recording in my collection for many years in a later pressing. Hearing the earlier pressing was an auditory thrill.
Moravec, pn: Chopin: Nocturnes op9, op15, op27, Connoisseur CS 1065 (Cream and Gold label)
And, truly top drawer for me have been the ORG 45rpm reissues of the London/Decca recordings, particularly:
De Falla's Three Cornered Hat,
Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe
Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream
But all of the ORG London/Decca reissues are great!
I am listening to the speaker corner. The Nutcracker .....
Ansermet it is spectacular .
just playing ...Freedom - At last on French BYG Label...and the whole Album is worth to listen through..
Followed by Nucleus-We`ll talk about it later on Swirl Vertigo, great jazz-Rock...
and finally a moster track you all should listenn ones at least...Delfines-Amigos sigue igual... from 70! What a bass on this tune...!!!
Have just been playing the Yarlung LP: Petteri Ilvonen - Art Of The Violin. My wife came in and said, "that sounds really nice, who's the composer?"
Answer: "just finished a Debussy piece and this is by David Lefkowitz"
Question: "Who's David Lefkowitz?"
Answer: "I've never heard of him either, but I'm going to learn more!"

Lars Erik Larsson - Concerto for Double Bass and String Orchestra / Opus 3

Linda Ronstadt & Nelson Riddle - For Sentimental Reasons

Mingus - Ah Um
.
The Chambers Bros
"The Time Has Come"

Fabulous record! Should be in everyones collection. Been looking for an original US Stereo Pressing. 2-eye "360 Sound" copy for awhile now...
Not to be a downer, but lately I've been finally losing my taste for a lot of the psychedlic era stuff, and the title track for that Chambers Bros. LP is a prime example.
Night before last I listened to "The World is on Fire" by the Strawberry Alarm Clock, a band that impressed me in my teens.
Man, it sounded so weak and lame to me now.

Maybe I'm officially an old coot.
Beethoven's wonderful Late Quartets played by the Budapest String Quartet on Columbia M5S 677. Delightful performances.

Vuelveteloca - Dias de Calor
LOL I have 6!
Main rig has 2 TT's
I'd forget the next day what I was playing as I sell a lot of records and often play-test them especially ones described as Mint or NearMint before invoicing buyer.
Just today morning I was playing Garth Brooks self-titled album that I did not enjoy at all, but to verify condition before sending expensive copy.
What's comming tonight? Probably another sold Thriller, Off the Wall, maybe another few valuable records to spin and than will switch to the music I like. It's going to be dedication to Abdulah Ibrahim(Dollar Brand). Will spin his records. Ekaya is my favorite.
Tomorrow I'll plan to dedicate myself to William Orbit and The Orb. With puff of nice quality hashish you can totally melt into The Orb and be for the moment outside of reality.
Joe Zawinul and the Absolute Ensemble

The posthumous Absolute Zawinul is Zawinul's last studio recording before his passing on September 11, 2007. In collaboration with Estonian-born conductor/composer Kristjan Järvi and the large group powerhouse Absolute Ensemble, that has been described as "musical omnivores" whose previous projects have covered music from John Sebastian Bach to Frank Zappa. This heartfelt project embodies the essence of Zawinul's brilliance as a composer, musician, and as a global citizen who embraced people around the world.

Conceived in 2004, the meticulous and painstaking project emphatically focuses on Zawinul's post-Weather Report music. From the exotic tribalism in "Bimoya" first recorded on My People (Escapade Music, 1996) to the energetic live performance of "Ice Pick Willy" with elements of soul jazz and fire-baptized gospel (inspired by a one time gangster friend who had an affinity for ice picks), the recording is a microcosm of life.

Järvi conducts his Absolute Ensemble through inspired performances with verdant strings, ethnic voices, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Zawinul, a true master keyboardist, was equally impressive whether providing an ethereal solo intro on the touching "Ballad For Two Musicians" or showing his signature vocoder skills on "Sultan" a thrilling tribute to the late Ottoman Empire and "Great Empire" dedicated to Japan.

Insightful liner notes, written by Järvi reveal poignant insights into the project. A video is also included with live coverage and behind the scenes footage. In the words of his son Erich, "Joseph Eric Zawinul was born in Earth time 7 July 1932 and was born in Eternity time 11 September 2007." His music will live on as well.

Lincoln Mayorga & Distinguished Colleagues, Volume III

Alive, dimensional, and fun

(Sheffield Lab direct to disc, Lab-1. Recorded in 1973, this was Sheffield's 3rd D to D LP).
