Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1

Steve - Yes night before last, got home late yesterday so i missed her live stream w Q and A, hopefully they archived it. I have it on again now and am impressed with it. I like the tone, rhythm and departure from pure Americana. First track has some impressive low end grunt. My white vinyl pressing is super quiet over 95% or better… Super enjoyable.

I see available also on Tidal.

Jim

@noromance

Thank you.

I just built a new crossover based on N-1500 schematics with modern good quality PIO capacitors and Duelund resistors. I just used inductors from the old original crossover.

@slaw ! Cool, it feels like I ordered Tapestry a year ago for Trish, one of her absolute favorites….. have to pick it up w RCM, same local shop….audio and record crack dealer…

@tgilb  Thanks so much for detailed and well thought out evaluation of the Colvin / Earle collaboration. I like to think i have invested in decent analog LP, digital and high speed tape gear to discern relative strengths and weaknesses, but i appreciate the input..especially prior to investing in the LP. …many, many thanks

Jim

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Butterfly 3001

I'm rather late to these guys but it should be against the law to be this good. Stunning album!

@reubent

Meddle was the soundtrack of choice for my and my friends 'consciousness-expansion' evenings back in the day. Still sounds great!

For those of you who pre-ordered or are interested......"Tapestry" UD1S is shipping now.

Gang of Four - Solid Gold

Totally jacked to see this band once again. The first time was in SF in the 80's. The second time will be this March at the Horseshoe in Toronto. YAYYY!!

@dredison  - "Meddle" pre-dates my early music discovery days by just a few years. Was still in elementary school when it was released. "Dark Side of the Moon" was popular on the radio during my early high-school years, and "Animals" come out during my late high school years. By then, I was all-in on Pink Floyd...

BTW, I love "Fearless". Great song.

Happy Weekend to You, and All...

Plastics “s/t” Island 1981 This is not a rerelease of Japanese recordings but separate recordings done at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas in 1980 and mastered to the vinyl format by Ted Jensen at Sterling. Quite a different sound from their earlier Invitation Japan records. Island took a big chance. It didn’t pay off.

Garlic Boys “King Of Smell” Alchemy Japan 1989 Garlics were a punk band from Osaka and well known in Japan. They were together and doing shows until 1997.

Zoviet France “The End Of Nothing, The Beginning Of Everything” Vinyl On Demand Germany 2020 (45 rpm DMM, done by Pauler Acoustic in Northeim, Germany but I’m not sure I like it, rather thin and anemic sound)

Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her “Give Them Back To Me” Hate It, Damn It Records Japan 1995

The new single from Pussy Riot - Punish

The video caught my attention, the music kept it

Following up on the Degritter discussion not sure if you guys read the article from The Audiophile Man.

VINYL: IT HAS TO EARN THE RIGHT

Posted on 19th January 2022

Talks about six passes through the Degritter.

@bslon  - Thank you for the comment. I find that sometimes an explanation or comment is needed/helpful. And sometimes it's not. For instance: A comment about John Hunter - "Famous  at Night" might be warranted. A comment about The Who - "Who's Next" may not be...

It's all about sharing the music Brother! Keep 'em coming...

@tgilb @reubent @slaw and others…

Thanks for taking the time to post comments about the music, I like it and it’s why I hang out here. As it’s been said, best thread on Agon.

@tomic601

Noticed your question to @slaw on the SQ of the Colvin & Earle Fantasy Records album and for my own curiosity did a comparison of my copy to digital. I purchased the album shortly after it was released so could possibly be a different pressing than what slaw just received.

I streamed the album on Amazon which has a decent 24/96 hi-res offering and compared the vinyl copy in real time switching back and forth between the two sources.

The vinyl copy sounds real nice as I have always thought and is definitely warmer than the digital version as expected. But, the highs on the digital version sounded more crisp and forward. The acoustic guitars and voices sounded somewhat more crisp but not excessive. Bass sounded similar on both versions. At least on that listening I preferred the digital version.

Also, Steve Earle recorded on even his earliest albums digitally so can't say if this album was recorded initially in analog or digital.

The report you get from slaw could be completely the opposite based on the different systems and slaw most likely has a much more technically audiophile ear than mine.

For what it's worth there you go.

John Hunter - "Famous at Night"

1984 calling! It’s straight ’80’s pop rock, heavy on the synthesizer. But, I must say, this is about as good of sound quality as you’ll find with this kind of music.

Don’t recall when/why I bought this back in 1984. I do recall the single "Tragedy" getting airplay on the local radio station back at the time. I also remember hearing "Sad Songs on the Radio" getting airplay.

I’m doing a pretty deep cull of my collection. But I think I’ll keep this one as the SQ is so good, it is so representative of the period of time and it likely has no value as a sell/trade item. Back on the shelf it goes, to be revisited again in 10-20 years...

Lucinda Williams / Southern Soul from Memphis to Muscle Shoals and more (2020 / Highway 20 records)

Lucinda Williams / Runnin’ Down a Dream a tribute to Tom Petty (2020 / Highway 20 records)

Dire Straits - Copy #4.  I haven't listened to this in a while and don't mind listening to it more than once.  Such a fantastic record.

Spotted a used Jeff Beck "Blow by Blow" on vacation hoping for better condition than my college days copy.  Was way better!  Followed by Brand X "Masques".  British fusion night.  Might do some Porcpine Tree later.

It's a Nektar night - Recycled, A Tab in the Ocean, Remember the Future.

All very good condition, but they all have an annoying sound signature.  Somewhat muted and not very dynamic, rolled off top end.  All different engineers.  Maybe Roye Albrighton had sensitive ears and did not like treble!

Nice td_dayton! That's what it's about, enjoying the music you love!

Jerusalem In My Heart / Qalaq

big stack of 45s on my twin technics tonight. low rider oldies, doo wop, forgotten boogie and deep soul cuts. most fun ive had in weeks

@slaw

That’s some most excellent ordering Steve.   Hope you get to play them soon.

@boxer12

Godspeed You! Black Emperor / Allelujah

A really interesting band.  I’ve been streaming their G_d's Pee At State's End!, from last spring, with attentive enjoyment.

Yes - "Tales From Topographic Oceans"

OK, haven't listened to this one in probably 35-40 years. Was a big fan of Yes back in the day. Bought this 1973 release from their back catalog sometime around 1979. Didn't really like it then. Let's see how it goes... It's a double LP, so it might close out the night for me.

Traffic - "John Barleycorn Must Die"

Keeper - Back on the shelf when I'm done....

Neil Young - "Harvest"

I have two copies, neither in great condition. One is definitely going in the sell/trade pile. Maybe both...

Bonnie Raitt - "Home Plate"

On the fence about this one. Haven't listened to it in a very long time. It's better than I remember. That girl can sing, that's for sure. Susan Tedeschi's solo albums remind me of this...
