This forum is antiquated.

I'm a member of several forums. This site is ancient in it's ability to respond to member's posts, and is also extremely cumbersome to reply to specific member's posts, quotes, etc. What am I missing? For some posts that are so technologically subjective....the objective merits of this website and forums are so 1990s. Ancient technology.

Thoughts? Discuss.

Thanks but those who run this website are the problem. Name me one A/V forum that makes you jump through these kinds of hoops just to quote someone in a reply. They're just too cheap to move this website into the 21st Century.

I still can't figure out how to quote somebody!!!

So damned stupid compared to ANY other forum I've joined!!

As frivolous as it is, a like button would be nice, given some of these post are hilarious.
@larshepping, right. But that's all fair game,. banter among the pedants. I was referring to the moderators.
"The forum is rife with Fox News keyboard warriors calling people communists and fascists while mocking and deriding anything that threatens their fragile sense of racial superiority. The rising tide of right wing paranoid talking points on this forum is really something to behold."   Really?

You’re right, there are lots of forums where political rant is accepted, even encouraged. Sorry, this isn’t one of them. If you don’t like it here, go there!

@csontos

Also no personal party lines to toe here.

Really? If you can’t “hear” how good a power cable sounds you are roundly accused of being either a) too poor to afford the really good stuff b) too cheap to have a good system or c) lacking in listening skills and are mocked.

How about the political party lines to toe here? The forum is rife with Fox News keyboard warriors calling people communists and fascists while mocking and deriding anything that threatens their fragile sense of racial superiority. The rising tide of right wing paranoid talking points on this forum is really something to behold. As if there aren’t a million other forums to talk about that crap on.

But at least you can’t use foul language on here. Insult and berate, sure. Just no cuss words. Heaven forfend!

@troidlover1499

Thanks very much for your sage advice. Both insightful and full of brilliant wit and wisdom.
@edgewound

Please don’t let the door hit you on the way out.  It is plainly obvious there is a poor fit here.  You should participate on other forums you enjoy more.
This new kid is a member of a few other forums as well. They’re all free...and far more functional.  The guy that designed the forum chimed in and I thanked him for his response. He passed it on to someone else that didn’t have the time.
Carry on...
yes, seems the new kid needs to work a bit harder to fit in... 😉

folks who hang out here are generally well meaning, try to be helpful, and understand that being here is being part of a community, one that is pursuing a hobby that can bring a lot of joy/enjoyment, and where experience and knowledge matters in achieving something really good

so i think forum users - new ones - who get especially rude, nasty or just plain ’ol argumentative get a pretty poor reception by and large

a few notable exceptions of course, as in all online enthusiast boards... you know, every family has ugly drunk abusive uncles and cousins that are hard to dis-invite -- rest of us pretty just hold their noses and try to ignore, make the best of it
Edgewound, no I'm not kidding. Again, granted no inappropriate language allowed. Great. Also no personal party lines to toe here.
The OP has only been here for a couple of weeks and is suggesting changes to a well oiled machine. Tar and Feathers come's to mind ... HA
It is important to remember that this is free forum and that it is an adjunct to a commercial marketplace for selling used equipment. The money is in the marketplace. The free forums are a nice addition but they are really just a nice service provided as an aside to the main purpose here - which is a marketplace for selling used equipment. Of course, the forums may attract people who eventually use the marketplace, but the issue is always how much to invest in the forums as a marketing source for the marketplace.  The owners need to balance that and, I suspect, the whole website is not a huge money maker, although I could be wrong. In any case, it is important to put the forums in the correct context.

@Edgewound, Okay so here's what separates this site from most others in the category of interest you mention...there aren't any nazi moderators here with their own agendas quietly manipulating the atmosphere within which interaction takes place other than to maintain civility. There's kooks and crackpots in control out there. Step outta line and...

just sayin:)
Not sure if you're kidding or not. Step out of line, and posts get deleted...regardless of truth and honesty.

Then it’s the whole post you put up.
The way it is you can do the portion or the whole that you want.
Leave it be, it’s fine.
Cheers George
Please speak English. It‘s a forum rule.

This forum. protects Luddites who continually shut down threads by their uninformed rantings.

You posted 67 times and counting in 11 days on this forum but you whine about the interface and disparage the moderators?

You must be very lonely …
...Yet here you are keeping track of me...and I'm lonely? Some comedy just writes itself.

And...Quite a number of posters here agree with me. By seeing some posts about the previous version, some features were lost, and the caretaker of the website got tired of the job.

This thread is exactly what I’d have expected after seeing the subject in my email box.

Nobody thinks the forum software is trash because they can’t handle change and it was SOTA in the 90’s, just like everyone’s gear here.

The rest of the HiFi hobbyist world are spending time mastering new concepts like digital domain room correction and directivity and AG is stuck on cable lifters, fancy cat-5 cables and whatever those stickers are that MillerCarbon collects.
I agree with OP. It's pretty much impossible to have (or follow) a decent discussion; since there's no visual connection between responses.

What I also miss is a -like- function. Some responses are pure shite, other responses are useful, beautiful, well written thoughts. I like these good ones to bubble to the top, so I can safely ignore the dregs way down below.

@dtc

Thanks very much for your frank response.

Seems many people don't like change...the constant constant.
I was involved with the current design. The developer was not that experienced and, as best as I could tell, was a one man team. Issues like including imagines, easy quoting of previous posts and being able to name external links  were discussed but he was not interested in implementing them. I got the impression he had limited time to do the new site and, as I said, did not have a lot of experience with the site.

After this version of the site was released, there were some who left in a huff and usage fell off for a while. But, it picked up again and is pretty healthy these days. Why is it healthy? As many have said, it is because of the people on the forum and the knowledge they bring. Yes the mechanics could be improved, but it is the people that count.

The current format was implemented in 2015. Here is a link to a post on the likes and dislikes.

And one that is a little more direct

Yeah...change is hard.

It didn't like the changes Facebook forced upon me. But, I adapted while complaining about it. It's also free...monetarily anyway.

It's funny that people complain about their privacy while on a smart phone or the internet.

You want privacy? Get a walkie talkie and a map.
Isn't there ENOUGH social media sites with meme, like buttons and gold ribbon awards?

Let the Instagram/Tik Tock 'ers adapt. It's enough effort ignoring the know it all's/chest puffers here.

Leave Agon be. Use Agon as it is, or go to the other sites. Learn to use all the existing features.
iirc just a few months ago the forum was down and problematic for several days... at that time, if i understand correctly, there was a major system update being done
I believe this is no contest for voting or not, imagine thumbs up or down or anything else, in the end all would stop writing and use emoji. Funny picture. Then the usual question would be, "what ?".

suggesting improvements is not insulting, it’s easy to simply ’go away’, it’s more caring to want to stay and want to improve it. After you get good advice, and make virtual friends, it is even more of an incentive to want the site to be better for all, including future members.

like audiogon, dpreview costs nothing. However dpreview occasionally asks for suggestions to improve the site, gathers together this and that, revises the site.

I imagine it started somewhat primitive, made incremental changes over the many years. I've seen a few revisions since joining in 2012.
Simple solution: If you don't like it here, go somewhere else. Or, you can just stay here and insult this forum and everyone on it. You decide!
If understand correctly, no one is required to post on or even visit this forum.
I choose to not visit sites that I don't like, for whatever reason.  Much ado about nothing, but you did get my 2 cents.
@craig1512 no it doesn't cost money to have a few more functions, you can't seriously claim that
I think edgewound has some good points.  It would nice to reply with someone to avoid the clutter and to avoid be embarrassed for not being an audiophile expert.  Some people are quick to leash out with a cute remark instead of having a heart and sharing their knowledge.  This intimidates people and destroys what this forum was set up to do.  I also think all dealers in this group need to be identified next their name.  This would help us to determine any biases they might have.

Perhaps we could take up a collection to help pay for updating this site.

I did agree with someone who said discussions are led away from digital.  Streaming is the technology we should be exploring.  Wonder if there have been blind tests to compare digital to analog.  I like selecting artists from Tidal using my phone.  Easy to find artists and songs I think are some real pluses.

Be nice to go to a dealer who can switch between streaming and vinyl in seconds to compare.
I have mentioned this often.  A realtor sends me listings in my area and I have yet to see a pair of speakers.  I wonder how this hobby even exits.  I would promote streaming to make as easy for newcomers to use in order grow this hobby.  People are really missing out on a wonderful entertainment platform.
The most important part of this site is the people on it.Im not against a slow movement towards better software but its about each of us and what we have to say.The site performs this task admirably.Big thanks to the Mods and yes change is most probably in the wind sooner or later.
People come here for free, get knowledge, participate. And then they complain.

Unlike other online sites, I don’t believe this one sells user information or violates their privacy.

So it is a privilege to be here, to read and learn, many helpful and knowledgeable people come here to share information and provide advice. I don’t think this site owes forum members anything.

Suggestions for improvement should be welcome but complaints and criticism of the site being antiquated are uncalled for, for what it provides. If you really don’t like it, just go somewhere else.

you mean like that, it’s just a right button click away, with Chrome or Edge
👍

Six steps to quote, like, and respond with a thumbs up to a specific post.
👍

you mean like that, it’s just a right button click away, with Chrome or Edge.
There are many posts that I would just like to affirm my "like" to, and easily respond to with the click of a button..but in today’s sped-up time-suck of forum posting, I find it too cumbersome and time consuming here.

I know...some will say, "get off my lawn"...and that’s fine. BTW...I’m 60 years of age...and can still "bring it"...somedays...lol.

Have a fine musical day.
My View:

US Audiomart is FREE to consumers. AG is $80? or so.
No one here mentioned the Shark did they? Anyone with
awareness goes there first when shopping. Why? Well it
covers eBay, AGon, USAM, +++ others on one site.

Is this forum dated? I asked some others who should know what they read -Audio Aficionado and Audio Circle were mentioned. When I tried
navigating those sites it was not easy. A Karma is very simple. Agon is simple and well organized for my use.  Just tired of having to blow thru so much vitriolic nonsense. Also do not care for the censorship here.

Some sites take special pleasure in f-ing with you. 6 Moons is one.
They occupy a second tier in my Bookmarks Bar as only so many fit the opening page.

Other worthwhile sites I would love to know about?

I agree it would be nice to be able to post pictures. Otherwise seems fine.

Mike
Been working in IT for 20 years, things change at a pace that's impossible to keep up with. That's why I recently turned to music. In my noob quest to figure things out I found this forum. I was really happy to find people who would reply to my questions. The site also works on a mobile device properly. I couldn't care less about features, the people, their experience and their willingness to take the precious time out of their schedules is what matters! You'll soon burn out trying to chase the newest things, features, not to mention the bad intended, financially interested, even paid for people trying to shove the newest stuff down your unassuming throat. Thanks for keeping this forum alive, best wishes to all!

It would be nice to have a reply button on each post.  I'm sure some of you guys can afford to sit on this site for hours at a time.  Usually I'm a day or two late to the game, so if I see a post I would like to reply to then just hit the button and the two are linked.  Yes, I'm aware of quoting.
Just seems to me a few pages of posts would be easier to follow.

I do really enjoy A'gon with all of its warts.

Regards,
barts
I like the forum's people and content, I have received a lot of help here.

I agree, it could be better.

this site

you reply to specific people, or the OP

you reply (only what you write)

or

reply with quote (starts with prior posters text). leave it all, or leave only what you want, delete the rest

Post Photos; links, links to other conversations.

Private messages: post links. telephone numbers, email addresses, meet each other is easy with no hindrance.

others reply to you, or others or the OP, it always shows who you/they are replying to.

option: send private message.

New/Past Messages: there: click your profile, a drop down menu has 'messages'. Here, I find it a nightmare to change pages to even find the place to view past messages.
