That Other Audiophile Website

Let's not forget. My negative review about the cd player was removed. This takes away the ability of other buyers to make an informed decision.

How does metal retain the smell of cigarette smoke? It's not like it's fabric that will absorb it.

I no mathmatic specialist but I put number together to see smoker seller on this thread. I expert at see people cover track like bloodhound on prowler. My wife tell me to no crack this case on friendly forum so I no mention but I work to reform smoker so he sell no more taint item. It bring deep tear of satisfy to my eye that I get this guy come clean and be better audiophile.
@flevick

just chill buddy

at this point no one gives a hoot about the weak op

we are all just playin' and having a few laughs
Only on this site could such a self-serving meaningless post be the subject of not one one, but three posts, and continue to generate posts. 🤷‍♂️
Can someone please make it stop?
The guy trades for a box of Havana's and wonders why his/her BOX stinks.. Geez..

Op Give guy screen name so we help him break the chain addiction and become better man. It coming 2022 and he live fuller life without the dirty smoke puff puff habit hold him back. Tell him he have better libeedo and no more yellow tooth and smelly amplifier. He list “no-smoking” and feel good for sale. We help this guy throw off chain like brother. Does guy drink too? Oh my.
In one of his other 27 threads with the same title, he stated he's already returned it.

Did you know smoke smell can be eliminated?

I would take off any covers and clean them in and outside.
The key is to use an Ozone generator (many on Amazon, or try Alpine), you could lock it with the equipment that is smoky (or perfumed or whatever) in a closet or garage or unused room. Run it a day or two, the smell will be gone. Then turn off the generator, air out the space - you don’t want to breathe ozone in high concentrations, but I understand low amounts may be good. When good I would put the covers back on.

If you disturb any soot after that (settled smoke = soot), it will give off a slight smoke smell, but won’t take over your room.

I had a garage full of stuff, and a fire directly next door filled the garage with smoke (through gaps). Everything not completely hidden smelled strongly of smoke. I set up an ozone generator and a square box fan to circulate the ozone and ran them for a week. It worked great.

I told my wife she reminded me of cigarettes.
She said, "Aww, is it because I'm addicting?"
I said, "No, it's because you cost a fortune and are slowly killing me!"

Thank you.
I'll be here all week......

...cigarettes that smell like CD players.....😖...ah, no.

I'd prefer ones' that would remind of lithe brunettes, but doubt they'd be available here through normal suppliers.....

Smoking CD anything is generally considered a Bad Thing, anyway.
But, hey...keep it 'lit' despite. ;)
Agree with CAM and US Audio Mart being ok. I have sold and purchased on both websites, and since CAM’s inception with "0" issues. I have sold a few pieces to the US and Internationally as well, with either a minor issue(in Canada only) that was corrected or never is an issue from start to finish. In fact I prefer to deal with Americans over my fellow Canucks, to damn nit picky and want something for nothing attitude at times. I have never bought or sold here on Audiogon, just here for the forum reads.

Only one time I  try buy use I allergic to feline so need ask if it have cat dander on unit.
Guy came back and say no but his wife has nice beaver.
The only thing worse than a dead cat on your piano is a dead beaver on your organ.
about 6 years ago i bought a set of factory stock carbon fiber sport seats for my track-going porsche - found them on rennlist, the forum/classified for all things porsche, somewhat analogous to usam and a-gon

seller posted ample pics and shipping boxes, said they were stored in his office for some time, he seemed like a straight up guy, no bs, we went back and forth, and i bought the seats, for 8 grand i think it was

i receive the seats, they look great, just like in his pics, but i could smell the cigarette smoke odor, he was clearly a heavy smoker, and the smoke smell permeated the fabric/alcantara

so i take the seats to my installer, asked his detail guy to use various cleaners, use steam, etc. on every surface, do a good job to best rid the seats of the smell - after his ample efforts, they still smelled a touch of smoke, but i installed the seats, and have used them over the years in the car, which brought great enjoyment -- i have had the car and the seats re-detailed, re-cleaned after each use, they are just fine now, they are beautiful seats in a great car

i never took issue with the seller, as he did not lie to me -- i did not think to ask about his smoking or any odors on the seats prior to buying them, they were indeed excellent condition used seats in all other respects, i paid fair value for the seats ... even though i wasn’t happy when i got the seats and noticed the odor, i dealt with it - he did not screw me over - life is short, you go after what you want, sometimes when you get it there may be something unanticipated, but you deal with it

I review all post and think people being hard on origin poster. By now he know he should ask that question. Only one time I  try buy use I allergic to feline so need ask if it have cat dander on unit. Guy came back and say no but his wife has nice beaver. That seem kind of weird because he in Arizona so I tell the guy I need more picture. I realize he not talking about audiophile anymore. You have to be careful with online. Give this guy break he going to do better next time everybody make mistake. Other option we use the zoom call with seller and get this settle. We get him come clean with addiction too.
I wonder if the OP were to buy cigarettes would they smell like CD Players…?

1+ @mmorrison55.

@tominnj - People who smoke are unaware of the odor. Unless the seller stated it was used in a smoke free environment I see no ill intent on his part. I would suggest rather than continuing what you are doing, invest in an ozone generator.

I use one to get rid of the kitty litter smell. Trust me, it will get rid of cigarette smell no problem.
Tominnj
You are without doubt psychologically unattuned to conducting business transactions with anybody let alone sellers of used equipment.
Used equipment is what it says on the box.
Used.  Period.

You don't seem to function like normal human beings.

Go back into your hole and stop bothering us with your nonsense.
Tominnj, google ozone generator. You can get them fairly  cheap these days. Running the ozone generator in a closed room with the cigarette odorous device will remove the smoke smell in a few hours. Seems a small investment in one of these devices will save you a lot of problems if you continue to purchase used electronic goods.

good luck
"...hid the mail on the bed."

*hmmm*

(...no....won't go there, or anywhere nearby, no....) ;)
(....note to self:  Sell not without disclaimer that said item '....may exhibit and/or exude exotic odors when brought to operational temperatures...' )
Oh my goodness @tubebuffer! LOL! Once I catch my breath, then @carpathian says….
“Once again, tubebuffer’s superior insight has hid the mail on the bed”

Great stuff!
This is very strange to hear. I have bought used audio gear over the years, so many different pieces. Not one has had the smell of cigarette smoke or anything else. Have I just been lucky?

I guess I’ll know to ask from now on. I must say, however, that some of the funniest posts I’ve seen in a long time are on this thread, so thank you OP for that.
"Did you know I learned to tie my shoes when I was three?"

No, but isn't that 'precious' to know....thanks for sharing....;)

"Did you know female killer whales experience menopause...."

That may explain 'Moby Dick', but does indicate male bias of the era...

"... and some turtle species can breathe through their butt?"

...which does explain some comments posed on some individuals' behaviours; i.e., 'talking out ones' *ss', 'blow it out your *ss', 'shove it up your...'

Damn....I learn so much on AG that I'd never, Ever expected....😏
The fact is you have negative feedback on 2 selling sites for the same issue 2 years apart.

Maybe you have a bad sniffer dude.
I did not ask the seller about cigarette smoke. Nor did he mention it. I trust that people will do the right thing. You can't judge a book by it's cover I guess.

real man only smoke filterless marlboro, no, even better, indonezian java kretek, right down to tip, while lift weights, while lookee azz on hot wife at healt klub - like hans and franz pumpin up .... yaaahhhh

but real man also never lie, tell truth always, even if truth damn ugly, unless of course he is damm weak azz addict wreek cig smoke and drop coke dust outta noze, drip drip dry powder snot - but u know trutt sometimes still hurtz

like the buyer just stoopid, soooo care smelly smelly cig smoke all over old cd spinner, but he no askee question, get what he deserve -- now he come here, stinky stinky all over a-gon so many treads, now we all hate the stink, you learn lesson now???

franz out
Once again, tubebuffer’s superior insight has hid the mail on the bed.
That poor seller is fighting a losing battle against addiction, which has spiraled to the point where he must sell his beloved stereo equipment to feed his insatiable smoking habit. One can only assume that once that is all sold off, it won’t be long before his lucky Earnest Hemingway man capris will be up for sale.
And all the OP can do is crab about a box that does not meet his olfactory specifications.
For shame OP. For shame...
You guy work out very well by use Socrates technique. I rather involve seller since we all feel like he still dishonest man hiding in shame of bad habit like smoke. It my hope that he cleanse self and become better audiophile and some day out “no smoke” on ad and that truth.this site bring tear of joy to me eye when thing go well and people learn. Op should apologize to seller and spend night listen to Pink Floyd to let go sadness.
tominnj, seeing as how you have had bad experiences with cigarette smoke and you’ve never asked about it before your previous purchases do you think it might be a good idea to start asking about that with future purchases? Or do you want to continue risking it? Not verifying the condition doesn’t make you stupid. What would be stupid is not learning a lesson from it.
I'll give you $250 if it's in the condition that you bought it. See now it's worth $250 to you.

You didn't ask because you trusted him to do what?
Did he lie to you in any way?
Was the player not as described?
Did it not look as described?
Did it not function as described?
Did you not understand you were buying it with a no return stipulation?
Did you know I learned to tie my shoes when I was three?
Did you know female killer whales experience menopause and some turtle species can breathe through their butt?
No I did not ask the seller if the cd player smelled like cigarette smoke. He did not mention anything in his ad about cigarette smoke. I did not ask because I trust people, and I believe they will do the right thing. My stupidity. I got burned twice on that website with cd players that smelled like cigarette smoke. A piece of audio gear can be made of 24kt gold, but if it smells like cigarette smoke it's not worth one red cent to me.
I feel like on side of op a little with issue. Addict lie and guy that sold it addict to smoke. Some say not his fault he have disable but he know amp would not have sold if put “smoke like coal miner” on ad. Maybe the guy ashamed and need help. Invite him to conversation you have email tell him we help him.
It seems like integrity by the seller doesn’t matter anymore.
How about buyer integrity?
Methinks there is more to the story than what is being told on these here pages.
Or what isn't being told...
So, your sole reason for not wanting it was that it was stinky. Ok. Understandable.
But, that is the chance you take when buying used, especially when you made the deal knowing it was a no guarantee, no return deal.
arch2 makes a good point; if it’s that important to you, why didn’t you ask if it came from a smoke free environment?
Now, if you, prior to purchase asked the seller if it came from a smoke free home and he told you yes, then you would have a legitimate beef.
But you didn’t. So you don’t.
