My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

@daveyf
You're confused.  Audiogon doesn't have and has never implemented the 'ignore' feature.  So why don't you tell us more about analog superiority over digital.  So very interesting.

RE: analog vs digital,

My assessment is that neither kills the other.  Analog vinyl playback varies all over the map from my 40 years experience.  There are euphonic/warm cartridges, turntables, phono preamps that give those listeners that type of sound, and there are highly detailed/neutral cartridges, TT and phono preamps that give the clarity I desire.  But digital shows comparatively much less variation than analog.  Jay did the dac shootout and concluded that very expensive dac's are very close to much cheaper dac's.  Even a cheap CD player can yield good sound that is much closer to the best digital than cheap vs expensive analog.  Perhaps the ultimate in analog, 30 ips master tapes really kill all digital systems.  I have been impressed by analog tape in casual listening, but have no experience comparing analog tape to the derived vinyl records on playback from disciplined A/B tests.

Alright folks

I will be arriving at axpona in an hour. I expect to push a ton of videos starting today and through tomorrow. This is the last show of the year for me so expect me to go strong.

OCD Mikey and I will link up tomorrow to do a Q&A in person. I hope i can record it and post it. It will be a ton of fun.

Hope you got to check out the new Krell amp. Krell is really doing a lot right. I like how Walter Schofield spoke with you directly. I look at audio as a financial investment. Sometimes it’s not about where the stock is at but where it’s going. I see Krell going UP! You might not have enough subscribers on YouTube to be some type of influencer by their standards, but you certainly are an influencer in the audiophile community. I’ll be looking for those videos. Oh, this doesn’t mean I agree with everything you say, haha :D, but do like you saying it.

Gryphon has committed to sending me an Apex. I spoke to Rune Skov from Gryphon and others behind the Gryphon brand and it is going to happen folks. The APEX WILL COME TO JAY’S AUDIO LAB. The timing is what isn’t clear due to the fact that they are working on all the orders first but i suspect i should have my hands on the Apex before the end of the year.

Rune was awesome and so was Anthony Chiarellan (Director of Sales & Marketing).

The APEX IS MASSIVE and it means business. I hope to be able to give you all my thoughts and how it compares to its siblings.

Lots of cool stuff coming your way!

Post the Youtube link for Wilson Watt 1 vintage loudspeaker system.

Happy Listening!

@jafant Would be interesting to see a video of the original Wilson Wamm...The Watt 1 would be ok, but the Wamm better...:0)

daveyf

I wonder if someone owns an original Wilson Wamm ?

Happy Listening!

@jafant There was an original Wamm being displayed at AXPONA. Hopefully Jay or someone else took a video.

If you guys actually subscribed to my channel, you would have seen it by now...

@daveyf you clearly aren’t subscribed to my channel but you’re a very frequent poster here...

I’ve said this before, i can not maintain the thread as well as my YouTube channel all at once If you are wondering what I’m up to, please subscribe to my channel. That is the better way to get more frequent content. If you see I've gone silent, it probably is because I have released a lot of YouTube content.

@jays_audio_lab No excuses necessary. I enjoy your posts here and your contributions. Listening to Youtube videos does nothing for me...the SQ is a joke to start with and IMHO nothing can really be gleaned as to SQ from listening to even the best systems over headphones from a computer feed. YMMV.

You don’t need subscribers over there, you need them here...where it matters, LOL.

Have to agree with @daveyf about YouTube. I'm not into viewing any YouTube videos, never have been never will be. Sorry

You all will be bored waiting...while the YouTube crowd sees what I have coming next. You will be left in limbo for sure.

YouTube also at least pays me a small amount a month to which you seem to not want to be a part of which is fine - it is your right , just don’t expect me to follow your wishes. I didn’t post but one video here of my trip to AXPONA this past weekend. You don’t expect me to type all my visits to each room do you?

My YouTube channel is of the utmost importance to me. It is what has helped build relationships faster than anything else.

My website will launch soon and naturally i will abandon this journey here and take my future journeys to my own forum section within my website. That is the next phase for me this year. It is taking me time because I’m doing 95% of all the work but i will eventually hire part time help to build out the forum section and moderate the site plus create members only sections. I am at the point now where I need to hire people to help me expand and grow exponentially ( video editors, moderators, etc etc). I’m focusing on the bigger picture now and although this thread has served me well, it is becoming outdated. This is no different than what night clubs do here in Miami Beach: They open doors to a new club, hire popular DJs, make the place really nice inside, attract good looking people but after about 3 years, they shut doors because a new place had opened up and so everyone begins to go to the new place.

The only night clubs that survive here are those that remodel the place every few years and keep things changing.

EVOLUTION AND RE-INVENTING YOURSELF IS KEY.

Absolute Sound and Stereophile WILL OBEY and follow the trend of social media. They can’t fight the trends (nobody can) and I promise you it is a matter of time before they build their own YouTube channel. Either follow the trends and adapt to change or get left behind and be forever forgotten about.

My biggest regret is not having started my channel 5 years ago... I would have 70k-100k subscribers by now. That is one thing that makes me mad.

With what Jay stated above, my suggestion would be for the forum mods to shut this thread down. After all, according to Jay, he doesn’t need it anymore! Wow!!

Your suggestion means nothing. No wonder why others were jumping on your back recently.

Jay,
I think it's a great idea to start your own forum to be able to have more control like Mike at SunCoast Audio did.  That way we won't have to continually read the unhappy posters that feel the need to complain and disrupt.

Trolls are a real thing... It was great to hear that from Michael Fremer this weekend in regards to this subject.

Jay, you seem to believe this thread has no further value to you, so why object if it gets shut down?

I guess I misunderstood too. I thought you were going on to a new life on youtube.

A yawn would better be defined by someone who only deconstructs and does not build anything of significance other than animosity.  I appreciate that Jay is working his butt off towards continuously increasing his knowledge, understanding and experiences and sharing that growth with us.

As to influencers, I had a really great discussion with the president of Gryphon at Axpona.  Sales of that product line have more than tripled over the past 2 years, growing much faster in US and Canada than anywhere else in the world.  Jakob specifically attributed a significant portion of that growth to Jay.  They have sold 86 of the $100K/$200K amplifiers since February 1st!

For those of you who don't feel any value in participating in Jay's journey, fine.  You can leave.  There are many of us who feel we are making better informed and more rewarding choices in our buying decisions.  There are many who just enjoy vicariously entering a world where our finances would never allow us to fully participate.

Cheers to Jay for his continued and evolving work!  For anyone who doesn't want to acknowledge and appreciate this, tearing down others only makes you smaller and even less significant.

I hope Jay finds success and continues his beneficial and enjoyable work.

Hopefully @daveyf will hide for a few days and not post. That’s typical behavior of trolls who come in and out of the thread. They attack and then once those who support what I do validate and appreciate my efforts speak up, the perpetrators walk out of thread because it’s clear they are not wanted here. There are many other sites where they can start their own thread moaning and complaining about others. That's the one thing the other website does a good job at: not allowing confrontations to occur and putting out fires from repeat offenders.

@jays_audio_lab maybe you can answer a simple question? Why is it that anytime someone disagrees with someone else’s opinion, the first word to come out of their mouth is the word… ‘troll’?

I get you don’t like my opinions here, as they don’t sit well with your agenda, but try and consider other opinions…no??

Dude, you suggested moderators shut the thread down...  'nuff said...  go away!

@psnyder149

Fully agree. There is a huge difference between considering "other(s) opinions" vs. just being outright hostile.

@daveyf

I think the general public has spoken for me.

Thank you for time here - come back when you don't have the urge to attack people who are regular contributors of the thread.

@psnyder149  IF you take the time to actually read the posts, it was Jay himself who stated that he saw no value to being here and much preferred his Youtube channel; leading me to suggest that the mods shut down the thread! Therefore, what is the point of this thread continuing?? If Jay sees little value with his continued contribution here, why do we want this thread to continue?? OTOH, It was Jay himself who got very defensive once i suggested the shut down, hmm I wonder why?? LOL!!!

@daveyf

I find it awful to see you here lurking  after people pretty much dispatched you.

This is what I hate about audio groups. Guys get their panties in a bunch too easily and get emotional over almost nothing. Yes I've been guilty of this too. @daveyf is not the bad guy, here. He simply stated a preference for forum/text discussion over youtube videos, which to be honest I see his point. The static eye candy background is nice for a minute, but it's much harder to scan a video for "key highlights" versus text. It takes a lot more time investment. And his "suggestion" to shut down this thread was purely tongue in cheek - how do you guys not see that?!

So aside from requesting a video... which was already posted, then denigrating Jay and his youtube channel as an "influencer wannabe"...  previously, continuing to push an analogue TT discussion topic that is not a topic of this forum and if I remember correctly pushing back when politely informed of this... capped off by a "tongue in cheek" suggestion that moderators shut down the thread...  This all in the past couple weeks.  Many of us have been following and participating in this thread for years. Positive contributions are welcome.

Perhaps this provides an additional level of clarity as to why some might be a bit touchy and others annoyed.

This thread has been about Jay's journey starting with amps and has evolved into auditioning (owning actually) a wide range of additional gear i.e. preamps, DACs, cables, conditioners, etc. If Jay plans to spend the majority of his time doing YT videos, which is perfectly fine, what is the future of this thread as he is the OP?  I am curious since I have been following this thread for a long time and have been a member of audiogon for over 20 years.  Will Jay be posting here and what does he plan on posting?  Innocent question, not a troll.

I should add that I have enjoyed reading this thread so thank you to Jay and those who regularly contribute!

Hi everyone,

This thread is supplemental to my YouTube channel. I will keep dropping in to give you all some small updates of things i am evaluating here and there but the bulk of my work will be done on YouTube.

For example, the new brand i will be representing will be unveiled on YouTube first and later will I’ll update everyone on here.

I appreciate EVERYONE who has followed me and supported me throughout the years. YOU ALL are the ones that keep me circling back in here.

My "rough riders" will always be special in my life and you will always have an open door in my home.

There are always antagonist that manifest themselves in the thread throughout the year. It’s like a cyclical thing but they eventually leave. I thank you all for the continuous support and appreciation of my body of work over the last 5 years.

Let’s not allow for those who randomly come in to disturb what we all have built in here.

Jay

@mulveling Thank you. Agree with you 100%.

@jays_audio_lab Sorry to see you get so defensive about this thread and its survival. As you may be able to tell from a few other posters, your comments about preferring YouTube and your post about how we would be waiting for an extended period before seeing your videos here certainly made myself ( and it would seem others) believe you had lost interest in this forum and this thread. Since that now appears not to be the case (?), I do think you may want to get off my back and reel in your rabid dogs. Oh, and remember to not call everyone that disagrees with you the ’t’ word!

I am off this thread now, as going forward there is nothing here for me...

What happens if the Moderators did shut down the thread or worse erased it? Do you have any control over that? This much information would be a horrible loss. That is a great reason NOT to rely on someone else's web site. From what I see it could happen. I stop in when I need something and usually post after a gallon or two of wine.

I've read this thread for a long long time.

Thanks, I appreciate your FREE hard work.. :-) I'd archive all of this. It would be a shame for your hard work to vanish because of a misunderstanding. How about a YouTube with a forum also? I'd pay to play.

Really OP I would. I would at least archive this thread. I've seen entire threads with tons of great information just vanish behind two or three people disrupting a threads and a single moderator wipe out years of work. I enjoyed a guy named GK I quit stopping in when he left. Where the heck do all these threads and people go? There were a few great contributors here, I don't know let me drink some more wine and think on it..

I sure like this thread.. Take CARE of it..
