My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation,etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

"I too listen to A-Z genres, this preamp allows you to render/correct unlistenable recording listenable, and the good ones great."

OMG I sure hope so.  FM Acoustics 268/C  retail $160k
@viber6

" The Magico M9 can produce lots of bass, but the reviewer implies the overall effect is a big sound which is unfocused."

Which review are you referring to?
Sounds like the consulting is really taking off, very impressive. I would love to hear your system in person.

@gtaphile

Thank you for your response.  Like I said, I have heard systems in medium - large rooms with the speakers 8-10' into the room where no treatment was necessary on the front wall.  As long as first and second reflections are absorbed or diffused and bass is controlled.  I have also heard rooms that were overtreated and either sounded dead or too lively.  Every room is unique and every listener has their own preferences.

No need to send photos.  Simply go to Audiogon's homepage and click on the 'down arrow tab'.  Select Virtual Systems ~ Create System.  From there you can upload photos of your system along with listing your equipment.

Looking forward to seeing your system and room treatments.

I don't think a $20,000 dac is affordable at all, but it is "more affordable" than a $80,000 dac.

@faxer,

Chazzzy007 - I never ever said in any of my posts how great the GT speakers are- I simply described the technology involved and what one should anticipate to expect if they had the chance to audition them.

Ah I believe you did. Here are a few quotes you made on this thread about your speakers.

My customer Bill had the Revel Salons 2’s in his room to compare to his GT Audioworks- He is also good friends with the owner of American Audiophile in Lynbrook, NY
All I can say it was a joke - The GT’s were a million times more transparent, dynamic and 3 dimensional.

Jay I really Wished  you got to hear the Pass XS Amps and Preamp Altogether on the GT Audio Works speaker at Capital Audiofest this weekend. You have truly never heard how incredible this gear is until you listen to them on the GT Speakers. Here is the first review from Stereophile - which basically said the sound was spectacular and relaxing and can compete with anything out there cost no object.

I previously sent some posts and videos regarding the GT Audioworks speakers as Jay visited our exhibit at Axpona. The speakers have the latest upgraded drivers and sound even better when Jay had heard them at Axpona.

You truly have to hear this speaker in person I know the videos only give you somewhat of an idea of what the speaker can do. You have to experience the dynamics transparency and  virtual reality that this speaker exhibits.

Stay tuned as the new Reference 3 speakers will be released in the next few months - with even improved musicality and dynamics

faxer  Of course you have every right to post in this open forum, however you being a manufacturer of these speakers it is evident your goal on this thread is to educate potential buyers and promote sales.  Chazzzy007 had every right to call you out for it.
@gnjtack (Greg of GT Audio Works)

Wouldn't a PM (private message) have been more appropriate to ask viber6 how to advertise your speakers on Audiogon?

What is this, a GTA mass market advertising ploy? What is happening to this thread?
@goodsource

You have been very vocal on Critical Mass, but as I remember you didn't vote on the first shootout (CM footers under Boulder amps) and you haven't given your thoughts on this presentation. So on this current shootout (footers under the Momentum monos) which presentation do you prefer?
Aside from a couple of manufacturers and the ’everybody has a right to post’ contributors, the riff raff of the last few posts seems to be the majority here.
@geoffkait

Maybe the 'Machina Dynamica Brilliant Pebbles Large (1)' that you sell on your website for $59.00 would bring one's system up to current times?  This might just be the trick us old dogs need to try!

"Viber and me have nothing to be teached from someone who bought speakers that lacks bass."

Man.....did you graduate high school?
Yes please work on these items:

1 High quality video camera
2 Professional microphones
3 Lose weight

"I still maintain that the Voyager at $3K could be at least the equal of the G Essence, Boulder 1160 for you."

Oh come on.  Are you serious?

@daveyf

We're not offended by your posts, we're tired of hearing the same thing over and over.  Jay has made it clear he's not into vinyl or R2R.  He's a digital guy.  You are beating a dead horse.  Maybe an analog thread would be more receptive to your repetition.

Oh well 10% negative posts against the OP is not so bad....I guess.

BTW I think you spilled enough
Your posts were negative. You repeatedly accused the OP of being in collusion with a dealer to sell and move products for his own monetary benefit. My posts are factual not opinion.
@guyl

Those people/posts ARE derailing this thread.

Did you read the OP's last 2 posts? I guess you are grouping him in with the people/posts that ARE derailing this thread.

There are lots of wonderful music threads on Audiogon.  This is not one of them.  Maybe it would be best if a few of us started PM'ing each other or contribute to one of the following threads.  Just a thought.

Whats on your turntable tonight?

Whats playing on your system today?

Classical Music for Aficionados

@mahgister

No it's NOT CLEAR.  it was a suggestion not an ORDER .... And it wasn't ONLY directed at you.....

IS THAT CLEAR ENOUGH FOR YOU????

You should respect the majority of the posters here and take non topic talk to PM!

@mrdeciblel,

I love apples, especially Fuji.  Mmmmm

I understand your decision to gladly leave this thread.  Goodbye!

"So there is discrimination against me from a few people.  Requests for censorship and bitterness show the character of those who do it."

viber6,  Jay has asked you countless times to take it to PM or start your own thread, is he one of 'a few people' that are discriminating against you?  The majority of readers and posters on this thread are sick of you.  Jay has lost several contributors and followers because of you.

Maybe it's time to ask for Audiogons help (Tammy) to remove the unwanted poster.  I realize he is not breaking any of the posting rules but if enough people complain about him they might ban him for a time.  Enough is enough.

Remember what I said, " if you stand in front of a white wall for 30 days and say to yourself that the wall is black and NOT white color" you will start to see the wall turn black color...

Remember, mickey mouse exists...so does santa...

Feels like we are being talked down to, like children.

@gtaphile

Sounds like you missed Jay's video showing the Vicoustic room treatments he had installed.  He has 'tunable' (first and second reflection) traps and an entire wall of treatments behind the listener.  Because Jay also uses his room as a HT room he is unable to treat the wall between the speakers.  BTW not every room needs diffusion on the front wall between the speakers.  Some rooms need absorption in that area, in fact I have heard rooms where the speakers are moved so far into the room that no treatment (front wall) was needed, every room is different.  I would love to see how your room is optimized for sound reproduction. Perhaps starting a virtual page with photos would be an education for us all.

techno
So many things wrong with your last post. From poor grammar to incorrect facts. Should have stayed in school a little longer.
@riaa

Ahhh,  now I know why he's so critical of high end audio.  I take back my wanting to hear his system.
@kren0006

Do you own Wilson speakers?  I'm feeling a viber/Rane thing going on here.

@thezaks +1

Yes Jay, I am also interested in the differences you could hear between the two services.  Great idea.

@inna

I suggest you take a long nap. You are the most critical poster on this thread. Getting a little sick of hearing you whine.
rbach, something forces you to read my posts ? Be nice, man."

inna, I'm trying to scroll by your countless posts but there are so many it's a challenge. As far as "Be nice man". Wasn't it you who posted the following on this thread.

"Come on..
I need a break. Wake me up when there is sound there."

"Definitely prefer this to Fyne/Classe set up. I hear no 'stupidity' that comes from those."

 "Stereo is for the masses, it is not best value, it has no value at all."

"Let's just not hear that 'who is strangling the cat ? ' Norwegian girl"

"I didn't exactly enjoy the appearance of a dealer either, though, but what he says won't influence my impressions. And one of them is that Pass sucks, including with M6."

You are a know-it-all with a social filter set way too low. You pick at people and the OP if they don't subscribe to your narrow view of high end audio. Why don't you take a well deserved break from this thread.

There you go viber. You get your very own DJ and all you have to do is take a video of your system playing one of your favorites. I'm on the edge of my seat.
"You sometimes seemingly overreact."

He reacts because people like you and viber are constantly nitpicking.
@jafant

Your posts to this thread are always about cabling. What cables are you currently using?
Loved the sound of the Constellation M6 combo. Your hard work paid off. Having a SOTA speaker takes time to get the most out of it as you have indicated several times. It sounds like you have learned more about equipment, accessories and your room thanks to the M6.

@kren, what a pressure it is to have you back.
"I suppose some are mad that I was right, but I don’t take any pleasure in that. I have no skin in the game"

Don't take any pleasure in that? Are you kidding?
I don't care what the next speaker will be. I am just happy with anything he brings in. I've never seen anybody so happy as you when a speaker left Jay's room. You've been absolutely giddy all day.
Many of us enjoyed the time Jay spent with the M6's. As he said, the M6's exposed every weakness in his room, electronics etc... Too bad he didn't keep them long enough to really get the most out of them. Wilson (which I also enjoy) seems to be more 'plug in and play' speakers.

It was so nice to not have to read post after post of kren ripping Magico. Thank you for the break kren. I sure hope the next speakers are Wilson's so we can enjoy more restaurant analogies.  kren we are all behind you while you make a run for the #1 spot of most annoying poster on this thread. Well done!
I hear what Guido hears. Sounds the opposite of the M6's. Sounds thin and forward like a speaker that needs to be broken in. Maybe a familiar recording would help. No way it's Sonus Faber. SF has a laid back warmer sound.
I've heard the XLF's twice, in person. The last time was with Audio Research tube gear including the Ref.10. I thought the brightness that I heard at that time was because of the Ref.10 which is bright (for a tube preamp). Now after hearing these on YouTube I think it is the speakers that are voiced hot from the mids up. I believe the somewhat high sensitivity and the forward top end make for a good match with a warmish tube amp and system.
