My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

It'll be interesting to hear your views on the 625 S2.

I demoed the original 625 in my system and much preferred both the Ayre MX R's and the Pass X350.8 (which I ended up buying).

@whitecamaross

Pair your Ref 10 with a BAT VK-655se and you will take your system to another level. The current delivery with the 655se is high, 300 watts into 8 ohms and doubles down into 4 ohms so it will bring out the best in your PL500's and Revels. It's neutral warm, musical, detailed and extremely dynamic. The 655se comes as either a mono-block or stereo amp.

If you put the BAT in your system you will not take it out. 👍
i am contemplating the bat vk655se as well.
Guys, you are going to call me nuts with what i am about to say, but today i went and bought a router (asus ac1900) to replace my apple router and i used a better ethernet cable than what i was using between the router and black system. I don't know what is going going back i am hearing more bass and fullness in the music? i thought i had the bass turned up in the system and nope it is flat at 0.... how the hell is this possible? i am very well aware of how my system sounds and can pick up changes rather easy.

Next amps to potentially go out of my stable:
350.8

i am planning to bring in the rowland s2 and the gryphon colosseum rather than the diablo 300 integrated. I want to keep trying amps with my ref10.
It is not nuts...some may say you imagined it because you needed to justify the money spent on the router and cable...I'm not one of those people. You changed something that turned out to be important for your system; it is what makes this hobby really fun!
FWIW that Rowland amp isn't going to really sing unless you leave it going all the time for a long time...then it will soar.
@whitecamaross

My guess would be better shielding with the new Ethernet cable. It also could be that your new router has a lower noise floor as well or a combination of both.
This is my first time posting here on this long thread. First off, i want to thank Whitecamaross for all his hard work and taking the time to share all this with all of us. I have been reading this thread daily and used it successfully to build my own set up. I have spoken to many dealers for speakers, amps, preamps, etc and they all always have a suggestion based on what they need to sell to meet their numbers. I have to say that if i were to buy any component, i rather use your comments here than to read a magazine article. You are as real as it gets and most, IF NOT ALL OF US HERE READING wish we were your neighbor or had the financial means to buy all the things you have gone through. If you ever open your own audio store, you bet i’d be in there giving you my business because i don’t think you would sell me what you need to sell, but rather what you think would work in order to take my system to the next level.
I don’t trust dealers, i don’t trust magazine review, but i trust your comments here. Why? because you have nothing to lose here. If anything, you are losing your own personal time by sharing with us. I wish you continue to help us all to find our next component.
Aside from that, you really helped me the few times i reached out to you and i am glad i listened to you because you took the hard work away from me. You already did the hard work for me and others by trying all this stuff out so by listening to your advice, we land with what we need to buy and not what dealers push on us.

Lastly, if anyone here is questioning your integrity about what you know or what you sell after you are done reviewing it, please send them my way. NOBODY here should question your honesty as a reviewer or as a seller.
i bet there are a few reading this thread right now who have also bought from you and have nothing but positive things to say about you. Your perfect feedback here reflects your character and that you are a valuable member to this site on all fronts.

Please keep up the good work whitecamaross. I actually know some dealers follow your thread (i spoke to some actually) and they know that you are the guy who has had just about everything audio related and believe it or not when they don’t know about a component, they go to this thread :)
cheers !
@whitecamaross
I have been told that the better Ethernet cables have superior shielding to lower EMI interference. It is not a “bits-is-bits” issue. I have compared Ethernet cables on my Black EX system and prefer the Cardas Ethernet cable.  Better bass and resolution.
Hi Whitecamaross,

The router will benefit enormously plugged into your P10 or at least a good LPS, grounding also will give you further improvement from the R45 to say a Entreq device which work really good on all equipment.

Dedicated audio switches will also make big improvements, actually 2 switches, one for your audio and one for the house. Check out PaulPangs and Aqvox switches.

If your going to running lengths of ethernet cable you should strongly consider Fiber optic. Check out CA' Computer AudioPhile site for Fiber and Isolation.

If your going to run off the ethernet the above suggestions will give you big improvements for a relatively low output.

Huge dedicated forum on Entreq devises on WBF.

tecknik

which Entreq device do you own/use in your system?

Very interesting products.

Happy Listening!

Hi jafant

Poseidon for pre & amp
Olympus for dac
Silver minimus for router
Silver minimus for switch

Didn't mean to hijack the thread which I thoroughly enjoy reading thru everyday.
@4425  - I completely agree with you - when my system is taken apart, it can take a few days to get back to its peak performance.

@whitecamaross  - I had seen you mention that you gave the Pass Labs X350.8 two hours and then evaluated it.  I didn't know if you meant that it was plugged in and given two hours, or if it was already plugged in and just played for two hours.  I no longer own Pass Labs gear, but when I did, I would need to give the gear a few days, after being plugged in, in order to best evaluate the performance.   Thereafter, if plugged in all the time, it would take anywhere from 30-90 minutes (depending upon what is played) when turned on to sound its best.  Continuing to enjoy the journey   :-)

Dave
Much Thanks! tecknik
no hijack at all. I have not read about too many owners of Entreq products.
Simply curious.
Happy Listening!
So you’ve had the Sashas for one week and already thinking of upgrading up the Wilson line. Guess that means you’re so impressed that you want even more or do you find something lacking?
Sashas are in many ways the most comfortable speaker to live with.
At first before i owned them i used to be the biggest critic due to their awkward appearance, but now that i have lived with them for a few weeks, they have grown on me. i want to try Alexias, but i can wait until they drop in price even more. Once they are at a good price point then i will probably make the move if i can convince myself.
On another note, i am so impressed by the black system. I don't even feel like i need to crank up things at all. I love not having to wait for a few hours before it sounds its best. i really feel like it is going to be tough to let go of this thing. It is intoxicating in so many ways guys. I am just like in love with the entire performance of it as a whole. Sure, sometimes i think about just continuing with my analog stuff and sell the black system, but i just can't see a reason WHY do that. It does everything anyone could ever wish. i can't lie, i am starting to love the wilson/black system combo.
Bel Canto used the Joseph Audio PEARL 3 Speakers (30K list price) to show off the Black system in the past at the trade shows. Might be another speaker for you to think about auditioning
The Pearls are very open and lifelike for sure. I haven't thought of them for a long time.
Tell him to get ready for the time of this life... I will keep my ref10 and will begin another amp journey to see if I can come close to the black system. This will be an interesting journey again. Will I ever come close to the black systems performance ?
hi guys,
the simaudio is still here and has been on for 2 weeks. The black system is always on since there is no way to shut it off other than going to the back and flipping the switch.
The simaudio is a great amp and it does so much right. That said, tomorrow i am picking up my second hegel h30 and will run them in mono block configuration tomorrow night. I want to see if 1100 watts of power per channel will do something to the character of the speaker at low to moderate volume. In addition to that hegel, i have been hearing alot of noise about a certain amp from a reputable brand that is supposed to be exquisite and amazing. It is not a powerful amp, but the report i am getting from others is that it will be a keeper. I ordered it today and the only hint i will give you is that it retails just under 5k and that it is solid state.  :)
No such thing as a keeper in the whitecamaross universe. Especially under 5k.
hahaha i like that mike paul..... However, WHAT IF i used this 30k preamp with cheaper amp alternatives? ever wondered what would happen?
So i have been listening to MQA files through the black system for the past hour or so and i have had the pass labs and ref10 turned on the entire time so they can get warm. I was going through multiple mqa files  so i proceeded to play the ref10/pass 350.8 at the same volume as the black system and guys at low volume it is pretty much impossible to best the black system. i mean the music keeps pouring out of the speakers with clarity and that can not be said about my other set up. It sounds good only if i crank it up to like 90db+ then it begins to shine.
i even tried the simaudio and no guys it is still a loss for my solid state pieces. That said, i am prepared to make the following statement:

IN A LOW VOLUME ENVIRONMENT (<90 DB) THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN THE BLACK SYSTEM. I don’t seem to recall anything come remotely close to it when doing low level listening. I can say with confidence that not even my former class a amps from the past gave me this level of detail at low volumes. If you live in a small place where neighbors are a pain or perhaps you just don’t want to have to crank things up in order to enjoy your music then this is the system for you. GAME OVER. I have already done the work for you.
Not sure how and where you are measuring your dB levels..but if you consider 90dB "a low volume environment" (at the listening position) something is very much amiss (at least to me). Can you explain? Thanks.

@Whitecamoross
I Know what it is !!.
Pass Labs XA-25.
I spoiled it .. didn’t I ?
Anything below 90db, the black system is the best I’ve ever heard. Most amps fall apart or lose their magic at low listening volumes and the black system remains clean and clear.
I appreciate your ongoing effort and enthusiasm in this thread, but with all due respect you should keep a few things in mind. First of all even with a broken in amp one hour of warmup time is not sufficient for most solid state amps to reach their sonic potential. Since the BC Black system includes an integrated DAC with MQA decoding, when you compare it to other pre/power amp combos you're also apparently using a different digital front end. So you're not effectively comparing amplification alone since the sonic differences caused by unique DACs are also influencing your results. Just something to keep in mind before you dismiss other fine electronics.
@whitecamaross   I don't dispute your finding that the Black System is the best you have heard 90 dB and below. It's your finding and yours alone.

I also don't dispute that some amps (vs your stated "Most amps") "fall apart or lose their magic at low listening volumes."  [emphasis added regarding SOME]. I, however, have a different definition of 'low volume' level...it certainly is not 90 dB.

To say that 'MOST' of the world class amps you are evaluating fall apart below 90 dB is highly problematic. If you had said 70 dB or below I would be more willing to accept this.

Can others reading this thread help me understand better? Thank you.
@david_ten Whitecamaross is a listener who likes it loud, as you can find throughout his posts. 90db to him might be 70db to someone else. As far as the Black system sounding better to him at his lower 90db levels, he is basically saying there is something special about the Black system, to his ears, where he does not have the need to turn it up louder to hear those nuances ( whatever they may be ) he wants to hear, IMO
@mrdecibel Appropriate username for this material! : )

"Hearing damage (over long term exposure, need not be continuous) measured at the ear is listed as 85 dB" in the link below [go down to the Table Titled: Examples of Sound Pressure].

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_pressure

90 dB at the listening position is LOUD! Somewhere between a Jackhammer at 1M and busy road traffic at 10M per the same chart (above).

This chart, linked below, offers a window into examples and with some very useful info:

http://www.industrialnoisecontrol.com/comparative-noise-examples.htm

"Boeing 737 or DC-9 aircraft at one nautical mile (6080 ft) before landing (97 dB); power mower (96 dB); motorcycle at 25 ft (90 dB). Newspaper press (97 dB).

Decibel Level 90 = 4 times as loud as 70 dB. Likely damage in 8 hour exposure.

----

Garbage disposal, dishwasher, average factory, freight train (at 15 meters). Car wash at 20 ft (89 dB); propeller plane flyover at 1000 ft (88 dB); diesel truck 40 mph at 50 ft (84 dB); diesel train at 45 mph at 100 ft (83 dB). Food blender (88 dB); milling machine (85 dB); garbage disposal (80 dB).

Decibel Level: 80 = 2 times as loud as 70 dB. Possible damage in 8 hour exposure.

----

Passenger car at 65 mph at 25 ft (77 dB); freeway at 50 ft from pavement edge 10 a.m. (76 dB). Living room music (76 dB); radio or TV-audio, vacuum cleaner (70 dB).

Decibel Level: 70 = Arbitrary base of comparison. Upper 70s are annoyingly loud to some people"

----

Here is another chart, for those that may be interested:

Thanks for that info and again for all your work WC.  I'm sure you all already know this, but I didn't realize how easy it is to use the microphone in your phone as a db measuring device by downloading an app (thought I'd have to buy a meter). Does a decent job, at least for ballpark figures. Interesting to see what volumes I enjoy listening at.  Helpful to put this discussion into context.
@david_ten .....This info has been known for quite awhile. What is your point, other than saying whitercamaross probably has hearing damage. He is around race cars, has been open about his preferred volume levels ( both audio and home theater ). What is it that you are saying ?
Hi guys,
a couple of things here regarding my previous comment about low volume:

1. <90 dB for me is considered moderate to low volume
2. I stated what I felt is my perception of the black system anywhere below that volume level
3. I used my iPhone to have a ballpark idea of how loud I am listening to
4. I stated in another post that I am using the lumin s1 as my source for the ref10
5. I connected both the black systems dac and lumin s1 And listened to both through my ref 10 at exactly the same volume and there’s zero difference in sound which indicates that the monoblocks of the black system have dacs because they receive their signal via optical cables which further improves the sound of the black system

That said, loudness is subjective. What maybe be loud for you maybe not be loud for me or anyone else. When I said <90db, that is low to low-moderate to me. If what is considered low volume is <=80db then I’d buy headphones if I listened at that level all the time. For me it makes no sense to have a system and listen to it at <80db. That’s crazy and a waste of money. You’re better off with high quality headphones.

Update:
i just brought the 2nd hegel h30 home and set them up quickly in mono mode. My fingers itched to push play so i proceeded to play one song and holy sh@iT is all i can say right now.... My preliminary feeling so far is OUTSTANDING, but again this is just the beginning. We shall see later tonight. Stay tuned.. i suspect that it will now be a dog fight between the black system and the ref10/hegelh30s in mono mode.
I’m listening to Enya right now at what I consider low/moderate levels and the ABC apps sound meter says my music is about 60 DB.

Much of the music I listen to is much much more dynamic and quite a bit louder. Because of where I live I can never listen as loud as I'd like.
@david_ten I am not sure you have read this entire thread, but if you did, you would have known more about whitecamaross and his listening levels. I like my music on the louder side ( as in my name ) as well. I have been around live music much of my life, traveled the N.Y. subway systems for many years, was a singer and sound man in a band, in a choir, attended many live concerts ( amplified and unamplified ), and in the audio business. My hearing is fine btw. I admire whitecamaross for his dedication and patience to do all this, not just for himself, but for others. I am actually surprised he has not shown any interest in a good horn based system, which has been mentioned in this thread previously by another poster. I read all of your posts, and others about your system. Enjoy. Sincerely, MrD
Horns are my next journey :). i am looking into some klipsch palladium p39f :) so don't worry , those are in my bucket list. For now, i want everyone's help with the following:
A pair of mono blocks or stereo amps that can be used as monos and that can put out over 900 watts per channel with a used market value of less than 12k dollars. The only one that comes to mind are the bryston 28bsst2 and 28bsst3s.
Posts deleted, as promised. Thanks @whitecamaross

MrD: Fellow NYC subway rider. Trolley's in NOLA now.  : )
Since you're not opposed to Class D you may want to check out the latest amps in NAD's Master Series, the M22 V2 which are bridgeable to 900 watt monos and retail new for $2,999 each. https://nadelectronics.com/nad-masters-m22-v2-delivers-increased-power-flexibility/

@whitecamaross

Lolz! 🙌🙌🙌

I've got a pair of Denon AHD 5000's and Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO/80's.

I haven't used them in 3 or 4 years. 🍻
Stay away from the NADs and Class D. I had the M27 for 2 years. It was smooth, reasonably detailed, and threw a wide soundstage but had no life.

Get yourself a BAT 655se and be done with it. Or get a 4 channel VK-6200 and bi -amp it (400 watts into 8 ohms and 800 into 4 ohms) just to get a taste of the sublime BAT sound before you invest in a 655se. You need great current delivery and the BATs have that as well as detail,  soundstaging , dynamics and just the right touch of warmth.

Call Larry @the Palace and ask him how good BAT amplifiers are. His reference system at home uses bi-amped VK-6200's. 👍👍👍

If going with Crown amps, QSC could be considered too.  A pair of used Emotiva XPR-1's would definitely fit the budget.

If you get the Klipsch speakers that you mentioned, with 99db sensitivity, your existing amps will be just fine.

I'd be curious though what you think of the BATs.

Dave
sounds good guys. I think BAT is going to have to make an introduction in my home. It is time i give that brand a try, but i need to be really careful with it because it is not easy to sell. This is why i have held back with Rowland as well. Not easy to sell once you are done with it.
