My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Your not allergic to Pet Hair. Its the DANDER...and all Dogs/Cats are different,..so you arent allergic to all of them...just some of them. Might want to do some homework on things other than Amps/Speakers!! LOL    Enjoy reading your journey.

If you get a Dartzeel NHB-18NS that REF 6 will be on Audiogon the next day. GUARANTEED...wont be a fair fight!!

Thanks for the recommendation of the ODEON.  I contacted Plinius and they hooked me up with their tech here in the USA who had a spare. He's gonna do the "ultimate" upgrade on it for me so I will be all set for my 4.0 and 5.1 1970's stuff. Much appreciated!

KW6,

Reference 6 was definitely less dynamic, less detailed, less transparent, less fully extended or resolving in the upper octaves than the darTZeel—which costs more than twice as much

TJ,

Those monoblocks are ANCIENT being sold by the old importer of Luxman. He's stuck with all this old stock and listing them for absurd prices.

Would they prefer paying $34,000 for an Amp that Luxman probably wouldn't even have parts for anymore. They could probably find more parts for a DELOREAN rebuild than that thing.  I have NEVER in my time in the hobby even seen a USED model of that amp for sale except by that guy...the former distributor who was stripped of his position.  Maybe your YG's were the problem. I despise bass so it sounds like Heaven to me.  Never heard a bad word from anybody reputable about the M900's.....WCSS is going for his 3rd try with them he liked them so much. (Or is it the 4rth time on the Merry go round?)   There is another thread going on Audiogon where the M900 was preferred over the Rowland by somebody who had both (4425).  Different strokes.....
I call it like I see it. Soon as he lost the distributorship prices went down 25%. Wish Accuphase would do the same thing...change distributors, have lower prices so more people could experience them. I have no skin in the game with the M900. I recently dumped my Dagostino M400 Mono's.  I always keep about 10 pairs of speakers in stock ranging from Joseph Audio Pearls to Klipsch Cornwalls in efficiency so just about every amp will sound good with something.

JAFANT,

Call up Vince Galbo at 716-688-3527  He is in NY and he is the guy who repairs all Plinius amps here in the USA. He IS the Plinius guy to talk to. He can probably get you the best deal.  He also deals with MSB products as well. He's a pleasure to work with and talk to.

#4425,

Glad your thrilled with the Dag Int. I cant get past the looks unfortunately on that one. Your one of the few posters on Audiogon I actually have confidence/trust in what your saying since you've experienced so much gear...and mostly the brands Im interested in or have. Now don't get a swelled head OK...already too many egos around here to contend with as it is!! :)  Happy Easter/Passover everybody

Mac CD Players are hardly high end. OPPO 105 (not 205) is the best all around multi format player in its price range. HDCD  compatibility is not on the 205 and is essential for many Classic Rock Titles released 15 years ago in that format.  An Audio Research 9 CD or KRELL Cypher would smoke the Mac....and a High End Esoteric would obliterate it. Surprised the OP didnt do his homework on CD players before purchasing a Mediocre Mac deck. Even a OLDER PS Audio transport would have been a better choice.

Smart, Sexy, Sweet and Stacked.

Oh wait your talking about amps....I prefer them to have the same qualities as yours truly...Sweet, Bright, Euphonic and Sparkling. I have no idea if anything I own meets that description. I just like looking at the pretty boxes stacked to the ceiling in rows.

Luxman hands down.  PS Audio doesnt make TOTL anything. They are a "value" for the money company. Their CD players/Dacs/Amps cant compete with the big boys...and are priced accordingly. I can get their equipment for about 50% of the list price
Not sure whats Chazzy’s problem. The OP stated Luxman is the best bang for the buck. List Price on Dag Momentums is MORE than 4X The price of the Luxman. Used the Dags sell in the high 20’s/Low 30's...the Luxman can be had for 7500-8000. Are the Dag’s worth 4X the price of the Lux? Guess one has to answer that question based on their own personal needs and preferences.
The sad thing is...as you alluded to before...you will probably lose 20K on the Bel Canto if you ever decide to ditch it...unless you got a demo at a good price or a great deal from a dealer you do a lot of business with.  Thats going to be a Major factor for those not rolling in dough.   Worse case scenario one would only lose 5K ditching the Luxman pair most likely
He stated he was sending the Bel Canto back to the dealer and await the upgraded version that recently was released.
Never laughed at you for actually using an EQ. Im sure the Rane is better than anything I ever used (Pioneer) back in the day. Now limited to the LOKI or tone controls on gear like Luxman.
He has already stated he thinks Ayre is grossly overpriced. The resale value is also highly questionable as to what % you can expect back.  I paid less than 20K for my KXR-Twenty and VXR-Twenty combined. What is that 50% off from the original owner???

If you have read the OP's posts he has clearly stated his view of AYRE products. He has also mentioned several times about re-sale value of the components he tries.  He will get his butt kicked if he buys MXR, VXR, KXR Twenties brand new and then doesnt like them. Plus you have to wait MONTHS for Ayre to build them...they arent ready made like Arc/Luxman etc

Not sure what your not understanding given these variables. You can easily sell Used Luxman/Arc pieces and not lose 2K per piece. Try doing that with AYRE.   I suggest you go to HIFISHARK.COM to see how much money you will lose on AYRE products should you try to resell them.  A KXR-Twenty just sold on Audiogon for 14K....how much of a Bath was that??

#4425. The ARC160M is the latest ARC amp. Unfortunately the OP used them with the Neolith speakers which is hardly the appropriate/optimal pairing. Had he used them with Wilson/Joseph Audio or something else compatible his opinion Im sure would have been more favorable. Im sure that goes for a LOT of the gear in this thread.

As far as the MAC 2301’s...Are you kidding me? Its like a 15 year old design that they havent been able to improve upon. No MAC Gear can compete with the Big Boys. Strictly for Mac Fan Boys. He’s already tried those in case you haven’t bothered reading the thread. He also has a Bad Back so the ARC 750’s are out of the question health wise AND they are impossible to sell...which is why there are ALWAYS multiple pairs on Audiogon.

The OP thanked me for a reason....read between the lines Grandpa.

No I have never heard the 2301's set up correctly...only incorrectly. I need to find some expert who uses an antiquated Accuphase amp paired with a rusty old ARC 3 Pre-amp. Now thats somebody to take advice from!! LOL

PS AUDIO doesnt make the best of anything. Get a Niagara or Denali which is what most of the guys with High end/sophisticated systems use. Go to the AUDIOSHARK Forums and do some research. Plenty of high end dealers including the owner of the site that will steer you in the right direction....and he's in Florida. No Snake Oil.

PS AUDIO (Paul) has said repeatedly that his Transport and Dac is the best CD reproduction he has ever heard.  Obviously he never leaves his own room at the Audio Show Conventions he attends to hear other Disc Spinners like Esoteric/T+A/Burmeister/Luxman/Meridian/Audio Note/EMM Labs etc    You know who PS Audio equipment is made for?  The same guys that keep asking you to review low end amps/pre-amps. WHY would you ever do that given your "taste"?  Common sense is not in abundance around here.

Hey Techno_Dude

Thanks for proving my point about common sense. Earlier you told the OP to check out AYRE gear of which I have 2 pieces myself (VXR and KXR Twenties).  I told you he SHOULDNT get AYRE gear cause the resale value is horrid. Perfect example....a 4 Month Old Pair of MXR Mono blocks just sold here on Audiogon yesterday for $15,500....List Price is more than DOUBLE that. Even if the OP got a great deal...lets say 1/3 off list price...he would still lose $7000!!!  Makes no sense.  If I was a DEALER like you imply why would I tell him NOT to buy the products I have??? DUH!!!

I wish he would try T+A, D'agostino 400 or 250, Gryphon Diablo, ARC Tube Amps, Audio Note etc but he would probably run into the same problem to a degree. He has already told YOU (and the other viewers) that he cant risk huge losses on the gear he auditions. The Bel Canto he's trying must be loaners cause he would definitely lose 5 Figures trying to ditch a Black System...maybe even 15K+.

If you want reviews of cheaper products why dont you A) Start your own thread with products that YOU purchase  B) Go to websites where those types of products are more prominently featured....like the STEVE HOFFMAN FORUM where there is seldom any talk about Higher End Products...Its Minor League Heaven.  You will get your fill of PS Audio, Bryston, Primaluna, Line Magnetic, Parasound etc   Tons of Reviews and comparisons if you use the SEARCH option.

The Op is not getting paid for what he is doing. Im sure he isn't making a freakin dime when he dumps what he has. Probably a godsend if he just breaks even. He's sharing his comparisons of stuff HE WANTS to own. He would get NOTHING except potential monetary losses for trying stuff out that other people suggest that he has no interest in having in his personal collection. I cant think of ANYBODY that would do that.  To his credit he seems to ignore those suggestions (which I applaud)....his tongue is probably bleeding thou from biting on it so much.

Keep up the good work OP.....Just do it for yourself as always. Stay out of the "Kiddie Pool"!! :)

MikePaul,

You know i did the same thing this morning with a VPI Turntable because somebody said the "Close and Play" I had when I was 5 Years old in 1968 blows away anything made today. Thanks to the internet I will never need to audition anything for myself....YIPPEE!!

My advice....Lower the volumes you are listening at otherwise your probably going to get TINNITUS....a constant ringing in your ear (or ears) that sounds like a smoke alarm going off in your head 24/7. There is no cure for this. Might want to do a little research....this goes for everybody that reads this page that listens at high volumes. Becoming Deaf isnt the only problem you can have with your ears. Much like your Back...you only get 1 crack at taking care of your hearing. Once you mess it up there is no return. I got this affliction in January...I will never be able to enjoy music the same way again. Never even heard of this condition before it happened to me. Dont take your ears for granted. Now back to our regular programming.
Not shocked either. There are always plenty of used ML 585 in the marketplace available and they are hard to move at 6K. Lots of people with Buyers Remorse obviously. Not that price should indicate quality or performance but you would think the BC Integrated at around 25K would hopefully outperform the mediocre 585.

Found this in MY posts.  Jetter asked about why I didn't use it (XA-25). Here is my response and I even offered to sell it to him. I can certainly see his problem with my generosity. Apologies to Jay for sidetracking his thread....but I know he is enjoying every minute of it!!! :)

Jetter, Here is my current lineup of Amps. Please let me know which ones you would favor the XA-25 over.

Dag 400 Monos, Arc 160M, Luxman M900U, Audio Note Jinro.

I also recently purchased the Valvet E2 and I have the First Watt SIT-3 coming tomorrow. I have a friend who had the XA-25 (He sold it to me in a bulk deal) and he also has the Valvet and Sit-3 in his lineup...he prefers both of those considerably over the XA-25 and I know and trust his ears/taste etc.

So the XA-25 is at the bottom of my 7 amp pile. Why on earth would I feel compelled to use it? Im sure its great bang for the buck for people that are financially challenged. You are more than welcome to it. It was used for 4 months by the prior owner.

Wow...thats a pretty big word for a guy who plays with Granite Mono Blocks. Oh wait...your add on Audiogon said the only reason you were selling them is because you needed the money. High times indeed in the Brady Bunch basement.

Grandpa...my gear has been listed on this thread. Its also posted on Audio Aficionado, Audio Shark, Steve Hoffman sites. Seems you keep forgetting what everybody has tried or has in their collection. Dementia setting in?? Maybe some adult reading comprehension classes are in order.  To be fair I get new gear in almost every week or two it seems so who could keep up.

There are 3400 photos of my "collection" on my Facebook page. :)

Amps: Accuphase E-800, Audio Research 160M, Line Magnetic 845 Premium, Valvet E2 SE, Pass Labs XA-25, First Watt Sit-3, First Watt Sit-1 Monoblocks, Audio Research 150M Multichannel.  Recently departed: Dagostino M400 Monoblocks, Audio Note Jinro. Incoming/On Order: DECWARE EL84 25th Anniversary Mono Blocks, DECWARE Zen TorII MarkIV

Pre: ARC Ref 10, Ayre KXR-Twenty, Luxman C900U, ARC MP-1 Multichannel, Conrad Johnson MET-1 Multichannel

Disc Spinners:  Esoteric K-01X 30th Anniversary, Luxman D-08U, AYRE DX-5 Universal

Speakers: Joseph Audio Pearl 3, Klipsch Cornwall IV, Audio Solutions Figaro M, Harbeth SHL5+, Tekton Encore, Dynaudio Special 40, Dynaudio Contour 30 (Just traded), Triangle Comete EZ, Omega Compact 8, Monitor Audio Gold 200, JBL 590, Multiple pairs of other JBL Monitors 4425 etc

That’s odd Jetter. I have no recollection of that. There are NO PM’s from you in my inbox from the past. Went back 2 years in YOUR posts and there is nothing there either. HMMM.... I did find this thou:

May 2019

RIAA, I am sorry if I upset you, I did not know about your hearing problem. The only reason I was asking you is because I have enjoyed reading your posts, had I known I wouldn’t have, it was all just meant to be fun.

So Jetter...Please locate whatever you are talking about and feel free to re-post it and I will reply (If it isn't a figment of your imagination). If somebody asked me about a piece of gear I have or havent used...well how "bad" could the reply possibly be? If your going to accuse or slander somebody in public make sure you have proof.

My good friend Joe that runs the Audio Shark Forums prefers this amp (akitika GT 102) over the XA-25 (He has owned 2 XA25's in the past for extended periods)  Somebody listed one on Audio Mart for a little over $300 yesterday I believe. Might be right up your alley.

www akitika com/GT102.html

Jetter,

I did not say YOU were financially challenged/limited. Read the post again for the 3rd or 4rth time. I made a general statement...not a personal one. Ive had that Amp for about 2 years now...still haven’t taken it out of the box. It came in a multi-piece deal...I HAD to take it to get what I wanted.

When I say North East im referring to NY/NJ attitude. Not talking about VT, NH, ME...Not even remotely similar in disposition in my experience. Don't get me started with Bostonians and surrounding areas.

Glad that worked out for you. If you ever go to separates you might prefer the 800 series over the 900. More musical...less refined/resolving. Jay needs to try these out since he prefers the 590 over 509.

I haven't taken delivery yet of the ACCU...just ordered it about 10 days ago. Probably wont get to use it till 2021...still haven't used the XA-25 and that's about 2 years now since I acquired it. Im the Antithesis of Jay in that regard. My stuff gets stockpiled and collects dust...Jay's gear doesn't last long enough to collect any  :)    Good luck on your journey.

I never procrastinate. Im very consistent......I just buy and throw in storage!! Its my M.O.

Actually the Accu was VERY reasonable. Didnt cost much more than what the Grey Market model is going for in New York. That's a good deal. But yea your still paying 1.5X what it sells for in Japan. I don't think there would be any problem flipping it for that amount after your done messing with it...but since none have become available on the used market yet who knows.  You could be the 1st to find out!!!  :)

Unless something happened since last night...OPPO is NOT going out of business. Just shutting down that line of business....which is why they will still be servicing all the OPPO players they have made for the past 2 decades.  Actually I think people will be BUYING them up since there is no alternative for Multi-Channel/Blu Ray/SACD Players as of right now. I purchased some new spares yesterday.  Why would anybody be ditching something that would make a portion of their collection obsolete?? There are plenty of QUAD Freaks in this hobby...with their own websites/forums I might add.
You might also want to try swapping out the tubes that came with the REF 10 and substituting Gold Lions. According to MANY Ref 10 owners this is a significant improvement. Might be worth the investment before you ditch the REF 10 for a 3rd time and find out later that you missed out on an improvement of that magnitude.
Your right Joe. My bad. It was the other MAC tube amp I asked you about. See what I mean about getting old?? Apologies to the OP. Going to hang my head in shame now.
Bel Canto used the Joseph Audio PEARL 3 Speakers (30K list price) to show off the Black system in the past at the trade shows. Might be another speaker for you to think about auditioning
Thanks for the update Greg. Had me worried there for a moment regarding your last post elsewhere. Figured if you werent impressed at 250 hrs the "Hype" was not to be believed. Mine is sitting up in MA waiting to come to its new poppa!!
Yea I had to "follow you in" to the quicksand. I knew you had at least one or both of the Luxman INT plus 600 or 650 ACCU in the past so I was wondering if it was worth the extra dough for the 800. Sounds like one piece of gear I wont have to worry about finding a new home for which is a moral victory. Thanks again for chiming in....you might want to update that other site. Probably some others sitting on the fence and awaiting the verdict to the Greg "treasure or trash" poll. LOL
Numerous people on the AUDIOSHARK forum have the Dag/Ref 10 paired together. Obviously its a match made in heaven. Most have Wilson speakers as well.

Grey9hound,

You think Gryphon is expensive? Compared to what? The OP is playing with Rowland 925's at the moment and the Retail on those is 60K....you can buy almost 4 Gryphon Diablo 300's for that amount!!!  You might want to check out the Steve Hoffman Forum to get opinions on gear for people on a limited budget. Hardly anybody on that page has reference gear.

OP...Surprised you started using the LUX Pre instead of the REF 10. Im sure you will swap at some point. Dont forget to try out the DAG 400's and compare to the 925's.  At least those 2 would be a fair fight in the 60K Range.  Cant bash Hegel, Luxman etc who are in the $10K-15K range going up against a 60K monster. The Rowland should blow them away at that price point.

Better yet telling the OP to buy some boutique brand that nobody ever heard of which will probably incur a 70% loss when he tries to re-sell it. There isn't a lick of common business sense among many of these people offering suggestions.
I dont think the OP stated the policy correctly in regards to Stereophile. You dont PAY a figure (1 time shot) to have a product reviewed in their pages. You DO have to pay for X number of advertisements in their rag in order to have a product reviewed. I have seen this posted on numerous occasions by people who work for Stereophile....mostly Atkinson. Its in Black and White Print. For somebody not to know this means they havent been paying attention or reading the mags.
Im not attacking anybody. If your reading comprehension skills are adequate you will see that I stated that I can understand WHY any Mag would have that policy. I could have read it in The Absolute Sound for all I know but thought it was Stereophile. Atkinson being in charge in the past would most likely be the person to make such a statement in the mag. I certainly didnt hear it from somebody else and Im not imagining I read it....multiple times in the past.  I have no skin in the game so could care less. Not going to argue and harp on it endlessly.....believe what you want and let it go for Gods sake.
I know what Ive read. No motive to state otherwise. Not going to waste time trying to find out who laid out the magazines policies but it makes complete business sense. If X brand isnt going to advertise why review their gear?  As a person in the hobby I dont like hearing/reading that BUT as somebody who has always been "in business" since 1985 I completely see the need to do things that way and keep the Mag afloat.

#GHASLEY,

Not sure why the OP didn't tell you but he has already had the Dagostino Momentum Integrated before and you can find his impressions if you take the time to read the thread. You can pretty much skip the first half of the thread cause he wasn't trying serious gear back then. It would be great if he tried the Progression INT from Dag but it wouldn't make much sense after having Both the M400 and Mom Integrated already....its going in the wrong direction.  If #4425 feels the Progression INT is on par or better than the separates he has had before I would LOVE to hear about it...could save me some dough (And others). I value his opinion and experience.

Think the majority of owners of the DAG/WILSON combo on Audio Shark use the REF 10....not even the DAG Pre. Just goes to show you everybody's ears/sound preference is different.
