if someone can help me......

just got my cj 2500a back from conrad johnson,  i have an et3 se to mate with it.  new tyler accoustic speakers.  not getting the sound that i was hoping for.  was waiting to get a 2550se but are hard to find now to pair it with.  am i doing something wrong here.  i read where if the amps arent paired right you tend to get a vailed type sound and thats what im getting.  no umph at all and i have to turn it up real loud to get that.  (bass is almost nonexistent, maybe there is to much to break in) tried tube rolling, new wires, different speakers, speaker placement sound is still the same.  i know there is so many smart people on this site and i have learned a lot reading your thoughts on almost everything. so if i can get some help solving this i would really appreciate it i know its something simple, i sold my pv 12, but if i need to go back to an older model preamp let me know and what is the best one, thanks..........

Hi

What tube is in the ET3?   I have a Classic 2 se and it sounds really good with a Gold Lion 6922 or whats in mine now a Reflecktor 6h23eb .   The wrong tube will make these CJs sound dull.

You said your speakers are new?  If the system sounds that bad, it sounds to me like the speakers just aren’t working in your room. I’ve had that before and I could never fix it. Had to change the speakers until I found something that works and you usually can tell immediately.  I’ve said this many times before, but this is all a by product of our new way of buying hifi without audition.

What source component are you using? Just curious if you are using a turntable, as the et3 se is line stage only. If using a turntable, do you have an external phono pre-amp?

I know this is a long-shot, but just need to verify that you have a phono pre-amp somewhere in the chain if you're using a TT.

What source component are you using?

Yes this. Your preamp puts out plenty of volts to drive your powerful amp so you should not have to turn it up a lot to get the system going.

This doesn't sound right.  Could be power amp have been damaged in shipping?

oddiofly, tried siemens, amprex, and a japan tube cant remember which, finally went back to the eh6922 that came with it......

had my alon II at 1st but they had no bass, went with the tylers and the same thing.

russ, i have to put it on 61...

twoleftears, just got it back from cj remember...

You mentioned that you just got your MF2500A back from cj, what did they do ?

Meant to mention that the ET3 inverts polarity.....  you need  to make sure the speaker wire polarity is inverted at either the amp end or speaker end.  That could give you weak bass.

czbbc;. changed out all the caps and resist output, etc.  sounds very smooth now.....

had a 2300a as well , but i had that one done by ahmed at amp surgery out of chicago a while back....gave it to my daughter along with my pv10.  this is my wifes amp.....

Just got it back from cj; yes, but how did you get it back from them?  Did they ship it to you or did you pick it up?

well if the speakers are new maybe they're not broken in yet that'll make the system sound dull, give it a couple weeks of steady playing.

+1 on speaker break in. My Avior ii speakers had weak bass when new. After about 300 hours I heard a big difference in the bass.

I bought new balanced interconnects once and they took almost forever to break in.  I was ready to sell new electronics because I could not believe it was more break-in time they needed.  Then one day it happened.  The heavens opened up and showered me with beauty and truth.  The moral is, make sure EVERYTHING is broken in!  You're welcome.

before you swap out everything, have you had anyone make simple measurements on the repaired or refurbished gear?

Sounds like it needed some break in time. I had an MF2500 converted to a 2500A and it took a few hours of playing to open up.

@kennesawjet

One speaker could be out of phase with the other. If this happens the system will behave as you describe. To see if this is the case, simply reverse the connections on the back of one speaker only. Play a track with good bass in it before and after- if this was the problem, the bass will be improved after the change.

This is a very common thing to have happen!!

2leftears,   fedex

havocman, thats what im thinking, but i switched out bacl to my old alons and same thing....

boxcarman,  and yes i redid the wires as well

itsjustme, no....

czbbcl,  i think you and havocman are right...

atmasphere, will try that, have a disk that aides in that..

a quick test might save many hours of fruitless frustration - or expensive swap-outs. The out of phase speakers is worth checking and double checking.

If you changed caps and resistors you need 200 to 400 hours before anything will start to come back to normal. If you put Teflon caps in they need a crazy amount of time. If you keep switching out wires it will also take 12 to 48 hours before things settle in again. I’ve moved speaker wires and it killed everything for 24 hours, everything was lifeless and flat. If you have new caps and moving interconnects and speaker wire it would sound just like you describe. I have a Conrad Johnson CAV 45 S2 and if I swap out wires it takes a while for everything to become big, detailed and enjoyable again. Same thing with any other amp I own. Run music on repeat for as long as it takes. It may be a few weeks. Break in is not fun.

yea, break in takes time, but you don't lose major amounts of bass - its subtle.  This sounds much more substantial. Or drama :-)

itsjustme and paulcreed  did something that i did for my downstairs unit.  this one is in the living room.  i readjusted the wiring some.  its not much room behind the entertainment unit so i cant do much.  i have acoustic zen wires to the power and pre, moved as much of the wiring i could away from them, they are very sensitive to anything laying across them or near them.  i had the same problem when i was using taralabs.  the sound came back some.  now like you said its about break in time and i have no patiences at all, thanks to all ill see what happens.  there is someone with a cj 2550se just put up for sale, i wonder if i could get that......
