@roxy54  I think both interpretations of my title would be accurate.

Adding a 1" thick aluminum front plate would certainly make the amp more expensive to manufacture AND make it feel more like you are buying something worth more than the amp next to it that weighs half as much. :)

I remember reading a thread years ago talking about how you could tell the quality of an amp by its weight. My integrated only weighs 44 pounds.  Maybe I should just pitch it.😁

My father taught me if you’re going to make an investment in material goods buy the heaviest one. It’s a sign of quality!!

A hidden iron block inside? Beneath contempt. At least you can actually see those 1" thick aluminum faceplates. I guess they add stability? While looking impressive.

When I was buying the very best field recording equipment I was amazed at how light they were, new electronically balanced circuits are superior to iron transformers (even Jensen), but audiophile equipment uses iron transformers there is only 1 reason for that, tradition. The very best mixers in the very best studios don't use iron transformers. If you think about it you want a simple signal path therefore you don't want a box full of electronics. IC chips are used as preamps in the mixers doing the original recordings, IC chips are not heavy. Just another blatant example of companies taking advantage of rich audiophiles being taken advantage of. 

Something (else) odd about a lot of humans believing that something heavier is better, even pets. I've heard more than one person (almost always a guy) say, "I've got a 150 pound Rottweiler (or any other large breed)  and he's great." No sir, you have an overweight dog. 

Someone could build an amp out of magnesium and people would probably think it isn't that good because of how light it would be except magnesium has one of the highest strength to weight ratios. As my dad would say, use your head for something other than a hat rack.

Let's not fat shame other people's pets!!

I do a lot of mods to my gear, which improves the sq performance. Some are : Isolating the transformer within the chassis, which requires removing it, putting damping material along the inside bottom, and re-installing the transformer; removing the power cord, and replacing it with a 10gauge cord, with a selected plug of my liking. These two things alone are, based on what I, and others, hear, create improvements in sq performance. Damping heat sinks ( and the entire chassis for that matter ), is another revelatory improvement in sq. Just as an example, I own two Adcom GFA 535II, one completely modded, and one stock. Night and day between the two...yes, the modded one being quite superior ( and heavier ) in every way. Enjoy ! MrD.
