Does port location make a significant difference with regard to speaker placement?

Hi all,

Pondering a speaker upgrade this fall, and with Axpona cancelled I am just going to head out and shop.  If I'm trying to "fix" anything with my current setup it might be some bass muddiness on certain tracks.  I could turn the Loudness off but why, LOL.....

Anyways, as I look for speakers am I expecting too much to say that moving from a rear ported speaker to a front/bottom ported speaker would be worth the effort to clean this up?  My speakers have decent proximity from walls and corners, but suspect I'm not perfect here.  I've also played with absorption behind speakers with some success, some failures.

So looking for first hand experience in changing speakers and port locations, and the impact on sound, considering same speaker placement.

Thanks in advance.

We sell many different loudspeakers the location of the port doesn't matter

Boomy bass has more to dowith the amp and room position

Absorption will not fix this an asc tube trap can help

Also try a sock in the port

Funny. Duped audiotroy into giving a serious answer, and almost got me.

Well, if you find the sound muddy, have you considered plugging the existing port?

Turn it off. Move rear ported speakers away from the wall. Stands? List equipment.
Agree that rear ported speakers need to be well away from the wall. Front port speakers can be much closer. Case in point, I just picked up a set of JBL L82 speakers and they have front ports and sound fantastic at 6 inches away from the back wall.
I have another question that may fit into this post.... Have a pair of PSB Imagine B stand mounts (rear ported to enhance bass). They are placed about 3 feet from the wall. I do not need the "enhanced bass" since I am using 2 subs for that.
Question....Should I plug the ports anyway to see if there is a sound improvement (haven't tried that yet) or just leave the setup as is? The obvious answer would probably be....Try it and see. Would do that but I wonder if plugging the ports on stand mount speakers would affect the performance of the speakers' overall sound.

It's best to keep a rear port away from a rear reflector. Too close can affect the port output which is why a front port is friendlier for a ported speaker close to a wall. Otherwise since port bass is 100% omni it shouldn't matter much.
Ports are a poor man's way of avoiding bigger speakers.
They will always dish out unwanted artifacts, it is unavoidable.
They used to be just one solution, now they are almost universal in box speakers..
Subwoofers invariably utilise ports.

If you don't like it then go panel like I did and accept you won't have full-on bass for the last 30Hz.
“Also try a sock-puppet in the port”

Ah!...much like Tekton in that regard
Front ports or a lower plinth port are less fussy. Rear ports should usually be placed with a good amount of space between it and the rear wall. I'd say at least one foot from wall. Some manufactures using rear ports sometimes recommend close to rear wall for bass reinforcement.
Thanks everyone for the feedback.  Let me answer some of the questions posed here:
@erik_squires yes I'm going to try the foam port plugs and should have sooner.  The reason I didn't is I had a friend of a friend who really knew his stuff come by my old house years ago and Sumiko the *&^% out of my system.  The results were awesome but he definitely frowned on the plugs.
@noromance Loudness is a guilty pleasure, I recognize it would contribute to the phenomena in question and I do turn it off if needed.  Gear and a pic are listed in my virtual system, figured most would click it to see.

Also, big picture I did stop by one dealer yesterday and listen to a few things I thought would be of interest.  Suffice it to say I was underwhelmed and I'm back to optimizing what i have, which is very good, but as we all know could be a bit better!
Based on the picture in your profile, that's a good looking system! The distance of your speakers from the wall looks pretty good too.

A handful of things (you probably know many of these):
1. Is the base still muddy when you turn off the sub? If no, and assuming you don't have a high pass filter on your mains, the sub may be the culprit.
2. Is the base still muddy when you stick a sock in the speaker ports? Many speakers/subs come with foam inserts to tailor the sound of the bass region.
3. What feet are you using on the Monitor Audio Silver 6 and the sub? I placed Herbies Threaded Gliders under my speakers and some Hudson Hi-Fi feet under my sub, and those made a giant difference in cleaning up my muddy bass. Speaker/sub isolation is essential for me.
4. To hit the price point of ~$1000, the Monitor Audio Silver 6 make some compromises. The bass region may be one of those compromises, so an upgrade may be in order since you're looking for that next level up in quality.
I essentially agree with clearthinker. Ports are a way of pushing the bass cut off a little lower at the expense of a much steeper cut off. I have never heard a ported loudspeaker produce what I consider to be accurate bass.
With todays high powered amplifiers,  DSP and the incredible drivers we have today you can make a sealed woofer/subwoofer do almost anything you want without any port noise.
Clearthinker in my experience 30 Hz is asking a bit much of a panel speaker. I roll my Sound Labs off at 120 Hz to sealed subwoofers. The Sound Labs will go down to 40 Hz nicely if a bit on the lumpy side but removing the bass from them creates a large improvement in midrange and treble clarity not to mention headroom. How many ESLs have you seen do 110 dB without vaporizing? Another benefit is that distance from the front wall becomes less critical.
Not sure where you are located-common oversight when OPs ask for

I've had the MA Silver sizes.  Delightful.  Yes, if you plug them they will sound better in near wall placement.

@classdstreamer good questions and thanks for the compliment.
1) Sub is not in the 2 channel mix currently - that's a future tweak, moreso when I step up to a nice REL or ??
2) Since pic was taken I've added Gaia 1's
3) Haven't tried plugging the port but that's on the agenda for tonight.
4) I hear you on upgrade, but will say I listened to a $12K set of speakers the other day and was thinking system to system they were no beter than what I had....these do punch way above their weight class.  So far the only speaker that really wowed me as a clear upgrade was the Focal Sopra 2, which size wise might be an issue.
