It's a great question and very poignant for audiophiles who in my estimation are motorheads (or gearheads depending on your decade). I drive a Green 2001 Subaru Legacy Outback LLBean Edition which I purchaed new. My second car which I purchased in the 90s is a Green 1977 MGB which I hve fitted with a Toyota Radiator Core, a Mallory Electronic Ignition and a German made thermostat. It is quite reliable now thank you. So in terms of cool, I've gone from the sublime to the ridiculous and in terms of reliable and practical I've gone from the ridiculous to the sublime.
2004 Porsche 911 - 40th Anniversary edition - modded with 15" Brembos, 19" Champion RG5 forged wheels and lowered with H&R springs. I'm in love, what can I say? Have been a PCA member since '84 and this is my best car yet.
On 1-13-06 I posted that my wife drives a 2003 M/Benz E320 and a 2000 Boxster, while I drive a 1992 GMC pick-up. Upon seeing this in print, she was overcome with shame and surprised me last night with a 2006 Ford F250 PowerSroke diesel 4X4. I now stand corrected. Life is quite fair indeed.
2000 BMW 540i 6-speed Sport package. The last great looking bmw before Chris Bangle struck totally ugly on the 7, z4, 5, then the 3 - all very sad days. This 5's definitely a keeper. Also a 2004 3/4 ton Avalanche 8.1L (10mpg!) to tow a horse trailer and ski boat. The wife drives a 2004 Pontiac Vibe so the dog can sprawl out in the back.

Before the 2000 540i I had a '91 E34 M5 in red. It was the meanest rip snortin' inline 6 you've ever heard. It scared most of the neighborhood puppies when it pulled in the driveway. I did several BMW driver's schools/track days in it. I loved that car - never should have sold it. Brutal maintenance though.

E420 of the old 1995 vintage before the yearly look change and a 2005 Dodge Ram turbo Cummins that kicks out 610ft/lbs of torque at 1600 rpm. I never thought I would own a Dodge,but after my third injection pump for my GMC 96 6.5litre diesel, I pulled the plug on gmc. I do like the Benz for just about everything it does, it is soo much fun to drive ( I can carry the family and luggage to boot)and the Dodge does ski duty 4x4 and pulls a 4 horse gooseneck trailer.( I have to looking back to make sure it's still there )
Oh, no- this is an area of interest that made hi-fi seem reasonable by comparsion. I quit driving for about 20 years when I lived in NYC. No need to have a car, or to drive. When we finally got a car for weekend trips (a new E class MB, which frankly, was more 'japanese' than german in steering characteristics, although it was comfortable), my long dormant car genes reactivated. I went out and bought a Ferrari (348 spider). Fun. Then I bought another one (355 GTS). More fun. Got rid of both. Bought another(328 GTS). Sold that, got another one. (512 BBi).Wished I wouldn't have sold that one. Bought a Maranello. Drove the hell out of that. Got rid of it for a 550 Barchetta. (Car was featured in the January 2002 issue of R & T). Drove the hell out of that, but the lack of a real roof made me wet and nuts. Got rid of it. Bought a Porsche GT2, set up as a club sport. Very silly. Made a wonderful commuter car, faster than most Ferraris, and you could park it anywhere. Got rid of that. Now have a 6.0 Diablo, very old school. Along with an assortment of more useful German cars. And the odd motorcycle or 4. And you think this hobby is silly. :)
I drive a GMC 3500 Duramax diesel Crew Cab during the day, work in construction. In the garage we have a 2006 M3 with comp package, 1972 911 rs, 1986 CRX for Autocross, and 2003 Acura MDX. In storage (not enough room in garage) two rag tops Mint 1970 GTO convertible 60000 org Miles inc AC and an Austin Healey. My wife and I met Autocross racing so our car hobby is easy to justify.

For the last 7 years I have driven a 1972 Porsche 911T Targa. It originally had the 2.4 liter engine with dual triple barrel Webber carbs. It has been renovated over the first 4 years to include a 1978 911SC 3.0 liter engine with fuel injection.
I currently have a 2005 Subaru Impreza. In the future I may have a Subaru Impreza STI (if I make the decision, or a Toyota Prius/ Camry Hybrid, if the wife chooses). If money was no object, I would get a Lotus Elise. If money was really no object, I'd have to go for an Aston Martin DB9.
My current garage includes - 2002 BMW 530i sport package 2000 Jaguar S-Type 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited
the list of things I'd like to have in the future is too long . . . but includes upline BMW and Jaguar models like the 650i convertible, or an XK. Sadly, I don't have that much money, so will be driving the current inventory for some time.
Lexus LS430 2005. Comfortable. Handling is surprisingly good for such big luxuary car. Interior appoiments are much nicer than its German counterparts. Reliablility is __Legendary__. Benz's extremely poor quality in recent years really puts me off. I won't touch MB until they rank top 5 in J.D.Power.
Ultimate car? I can't make up my mind. It kind of depends on the mood when it is good, BMW M3 or Porsche 911, when stressed out/tired, a Lexus or 7 series Bimmer.
Sorry I missed your post. I'm seldom over in this section. In any case I did not keep the Webber carbs on the 3.0. When they were tuned properly on the 2.4 that thing hummed, but the mixture is easier to manage on the fuel injected 3.0 so I gave up the Webbers. If I ever go back to the triple barrel carb set up I'm getting the PMO carbs. These things are based on the Webber design, but with significant improvements, including easier tuning. Truly audiophile carbs compared to the Webbers.

I changed out the original rotors to Brembo's and ceramic pads at about 160,000 miles. Still going strong. They built these cars to last (except for the 2 problems that almost all SVX's had, but that's another story!).
It's funny I drive a Nissan Infiniti G20 w/the SRDET engine - sure enough, I'm in for a check up at the mechanic and I say hey, the breaks are squeaking and he said the same thing people say about SVX - did you change out to the Brembos yourself?
Started with a Renault 5 , followed by the Honda crx with 3 times more horsepower!! The Honda gave me a lot of problems and I will never buy a used Honda anymore. In 2000 got my hands on a half-year old Subaru Impreza GT Turbo , 230 HP ,FWD and amazing handling. Killersound and looks like a ninja in silver ,I love the Impreza :-)
Every once in a while they would go "Deliverance" on me (squeal)! But since changing over to the Brembo's, they just work, and work well! I had my tire guys, Butler Tires, do the changeover. A little pricey, but they do (as their motto states) "baby your car".
I drive a '99 M3, but admire the style of Audis. I like the A4 circa '02, '03 before they made the rear tail lights so long. Classy, sexy, and look like they've been carved from a single piece of granite. Solid!
