Not sure these are all power ballads, but my list is:
Love Reign O're me - The Who Since I've been loving you - Led Zeppelin One - U2 Black - Pearl Jam |
Sister Christian...good call also! |
Sebrof-Sister Christian good call! Here's 5 more that are great songs that classic rock/retro radio has forgotten... Fire And Ice-Pat Benatar Screaming In The Night-Krokus When The Night Comes Down-Judas Priest That Time Of Year-Vinnie Vincent Invasion It Ain't Love-House Of Lords |
Comfortably numb- David Gilmore/ Pink Floyd Throw down the sword-Wishbone Ash Crossroads-Cream |
Not many listed before Mapman's holy thread resurrection were actually power ballads, but we're doing much better here in 2012.
Night Ranger - Sister Christian
You're motoring!!! |
"Just Between You and Me- April Wine"
I forgot about that one.... |
Just Between You and Me- April Wine Two Steps Behind- Def Leppard Tuesday's Gone- Lynyrd Skynyrd Beth- Kiss Last Train Out of My Heart- Cinderella

|
Queen---We Are the Champions ELP-----Tarkus |
this list must include...
"too drunk to f**k" - dead kennedys |
Normally not my favorite genre, but Todd Rundgren is a master. He did a power ballad intensive record in the '80's called "Nearly Human" that's loaded with great examples. Videos from the tour supporting that album are all over You Tube. Check out "Parallel Lines" and "Can't Stop Runnin" with Todd and Lyle Workman (now a big hollywood film score guy) on guitar. TR's never been afraid to have a monster second guitar in his band -currently Jesse Gress - and this is used to great effect on these power ballads. If you stretch the definition a bit, the bluesy "Unloved Children" from the same tour might be the best of these You Tube videos.

Here's 5 on 1 album- Def Leppards' Vault: Foolin' Bringin' On The Heartbreak Love Bites Hysteria Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad |
Love Hurts covered by Joan Jett. |
Another hair metal classic that was overlooked...Nobody's Fool-Cinderella. |
Wind of Change - Scorpions Behind Blue Eyes - Who Long Goodbyes - Camel Babe I'm Going to Leave You - Zeppelin When I'm With You - Sheriff
BTW, Andrew Latimer's guitar lead at the end of "Long Goodbyes" is perhaps my favorite of all time. IT takes a tune that is already soaring at that point to an ever higher stratospheric level that is hard to match. |
Journey - Who't Crying Now (always liked Schon's simple but beautiful solo on this one) ZZ Top - Rough Boy Joe Satriani - Always With Me Always With You (not sure if it counts) Def Leppard - Hysteria Aerosmith - What it Takes |
Power Ballad...I've always laughed at that term. Call it what it is,songs to get chicks to buy the record!! This term came out of the 80's hair band era. I'm pretty sure Floyd,Hendrix and Trower would not like to be included in this bunch. This is just my opinion on the subject, everyone is entitled to their own. |
Also:
Since I've Been Loving You Bridge of Sighs Voodoo Child Echoes I Want You (She's So Heavy) |
Really a lot of bad music in here. Isn't that the point? I don't think we are talking about our favorite "good" power ballads, right? Any list that includes Bon Jovi and Foriegner "I Want to Know What Love Is" has to suck right? |
|
I Want to Know What Love Is--Foreigner Nights in White Satin--Moody Blues More Than A Feeling--Boston What About Love--Heart Sara--Starship |
Songs from Michael Learns to Rock. |
Not a fan of power balads in general, especially from the hair bands. These are as close as I get...
'July Morning'- Uriah Heap 'Broken/Head Over Heals'- Tears for Fears 'Sabra Cadabra'- Black Sabbath 'Astronomy'- Blue Oyster Cult 'Feel Like Making Love'- Bad Company |
The Who... BEHIND BLUE EYES |
"More Than Words Can Say", Alias "Love of A Lifetime", Firehouse "Heaven", Warrant "When I'm With You", Sheriff "When I See You Smile", Bad English |
Zepplin's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You"
Alice Cooper's "Only Women Bleed"
Kiss's "Beth"
Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home"
Ozzy's "Mama I'm Coming Home" |
I Remember You-Skid Row Good one! Forgotten about it! |
