Okay ... my second ONE all time favorite love song (brought to mind from thread on intelligent lyrics) ...
Billy Bragg - The Fourteenth of February (from William Bloke):
I wish that I could remember the first moment that we met If only I could remember that sweet moment when we met If I knew then that I Would spend the rest of my life with you I imagine I would have held your gaze a little longer When first our eyes met
Did it rain or did sunshine attend out first meeting? What words were said? What weight given to that first greeting? My diary doesn't help I don't even mention your name until that summer When bloomed the Seed sown on the first day that we met
I know the date, I know the place where in happened Yet in my mind the scene I recall is imagined As we grow old I'm sure There will be moments that we will not forget But I would Remember something of the moment that we met |
led zep - "thank you"
If the sun refused to shine, i would still be loving you When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me |
Everly Bros./Let It Be Me. Guess it was a French song first but never heard it in French. |
|
Regiolanthe, I was hoping someone would pick up on the tongue-and-cheek nature of "Excitable Boy", given the rather dark nature of the lyric. Thanks for catching it. ;) |
Wow, it's really hard to narrow it down to just one song. I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned, but I'll have to go with Al Green's "Let's stay together". |
You might think it really cheesy, and somewhat overplayed in its day, but "Everything I own" by Bread was actually written by David Gates for his late father (who died when he was young). With this in mind I think it's an incredibly moving song. |
Slipknot1,
In response to Excitable Boy, I do have to say that Warren Z did put out some pretty romantic tunes in his own fashion. I rarely pull my vinyl Warren - but I did a few months ago - and played his major debut "Warren Zevon". "Backs Turned Looking Down the Path", "Hasten Down the Wind", and "Carmelita" are all songs worthy of any romantic troubadour, even if the romance is a little flawed! I can't say that I paid much attention to his later offerings (although my beautiful wife bought "My Ride's Here" a few years ago so that I could add a "Z" to the CD collection), and it's nice to see him get some belated acclaim. |
Regiolanthe, You just may have hit on one of the finest love songs of all time. I never get sick of hearing Neil Young sing that song. That one and "Cowgirl In The Sand" |
Well ... the more I listen to it, the more I like Neil Young's "Harvest Moon". A long-time companion song if there ever was one (20 years and still working on it myself). And if you can't envision yourself swaying in someone's arms to the music, well ... I pity your lack of imagination.
"Come a little bit closer Hear what I have to say Just like children sleepin' We could dream this night away.
But there's a full moon risin' Let's go dancin' in the light We know where the music's playin' Let's go out and feel the night.
Because I'm still in love with you I want to see you dance again Because I'm still in love with you On this harvest moon.
When we were strangers I watched you from afar When we were lovers I loved you with all my heart.
But now it's gettin' late And the moon is climbin' high I want to celebrate See it shinin' in your eye.
Because I'm still in love with you I want to see you dance again Because I'm still in love with you On this harvest moon." |
"Have I Told You Lately That I love You" - Van Morrison |
Hands down winner Craig - "Longer Than" by Dan Fogelberg, a close second is "Woman" by John Lennon. These songs guaranteed to get you out of any traps... |
gee, gen, you better run out and buy some waits because i think you'll be an instant fan. if you need recs let me know. |
Kublakhan,
WOW that Tom Waits song is incredible!!! Thanks for the recommendation.
So simple yet so musically fantastic. I love it. Very sad too. :( |
"Excitable Boy" - Warren Zevon ;) |
"Ben" - Michael Jackson. anybody? |
Only Fools Rush In--by EP is another all time fav |
Bell Bottom Blues-Derek and the Domino's |
Baby when I see you smile---Bad English |
"You're Breaking My Heart" By Harry Nilsson and "1000 Times Goodbye" By Megadeth. |
I dont particularly like love songs.... |
TOM WAITS - not your typical love song for sure but it just wastes me. I always need recovery time after I hear it. (The last line - phew...get ready) The lyrics weren't written down for me so I used quotes and breaks where I thought they made sense.
"MARTHA" - by TOM WAITS
"Operator, number please, it's been so many years." Will she remember my old voice while i fight the tears?
"Hello, hello there is this Martha, this is old Tom Frost. I am calling long distance dont worry about the cost. Cause it's been 40 years or more now Martha please recall... meet me out for coffee where we'll talk about it all."
Those were days of roses, poetry and prose and Martha all I had was you and all you had was me. There were no tomorrows we packed away our sorrows and we saved them for a rainy day.
"I feel so much older now, you're much older too. A house a husband, how's your kids? You know that I got married to?
"Your lucky that you found someone to make you feel secure. We were all so young and foolish, now we are mature."
And those were days of roses, poetry and prose and Martha all I had was you and all you had was me. There was no tomorrow, packed away our sorrows and we saved them for a rainy day.
"And I was always so impulsive, I guess that I still am. All that really mattered then was that I was a Man. I guess that our being together was never meant to be.
"Martha? Martha?
"I love you can't you see?"
And..those were days of roses, poetry and prose and Martha all I had was you and all you had was me.
There were no tomorrows, we packed away our sorrows and we saved them for a rainy day.
"And I remember quiet evenings trembling close to you."
END SONG
Add Waits' voice and instrumentation and damn it, you have to carry me to bed weeping. Every time. That part was very hard to explain when this came on the jukebox in a divvy little gin joint in the East Village. Never go back there again. Geez...
|
Believe in love---Scorpions |
First rock i was ever exposed to....you will not find a more complete and challenging piece of music anywhere. |
Je t'aime...moi non plus by Serge Gainsbourg |
Joan Baez..."Plasir de l'amoir" (but my French spelling may be rotten). |
"In My World"--Moody Blues |
I have a few and can't pick one favorite. Mine are
The way you look tonight - Frank Sinatra Someone to watch over me - Blossom Dearie Porgy - Nina Simone Maybe I'm amazed - Paul McCartney |
I love you more than you'll ever know, sung by Al Kooper on Blood Sweat & Tears first album, Child is father to the man. I think every man can relate to this one. |
I have to go with Dave Matthews Band "Crush" also. I got a cd from a barmitzvah with Crush on it and i had never heard of Dave Matthews before. Well, the song opened up a whole new side of music, and got me into the good stuff. |
Lets Get Lost as sang by Chet Baker... Although I love all his ballads. |
"Honestly" by Harem Scarem! |
Dylan's "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" and Nick Cave's "Lime Tree Arbor." |
|
"Longer" by Dan Fogelberg |
"Triad" David Crosby or Grace Slick's version |
Nights In White Satin, Moody Blues, "Just what you want to be, you'll be in the end. And i love you, oh how i love you..." Poetry par excellant! |
La Vie En Rose by Edith Piaf. Pardon the spelling. |
While we're ignoring nominations limits, I also remembered Gene Clark's "I Knew I'd Want You" by The Byrds. (Well, I've got to help counter all those Peter Gabriel votes, an estimable artist who's about as romantic as Stanley Kubrick :-) |
Loves great ocean by Kd Lang |
"More Today Than Yesterday" by Spiral Starecase
or "Happy Together" by the Turtles |
Oh, and ONE :-) more, "Ring the Bells" by The Kinks...straight to the heart, from Ray's. |
Niel Finn's " Fall at your Feet" and "In your eyes" Peter Gabriel
Matt |
Hey, we're audiophiles...we're all sociopaths! ;^) |
Aren't sex songs about getting it and love songs about not (yet) getting it? Or am I just a sociopath? |
Q: "Hey Dekay (and others), aren't sex songs a different thing than love songs?"
A: Not to a sociopath. |
Thanks everyone! Cheers. Craig |
|
Your point would be better taken, Zaikesman, had you not voted for Marley!
Just raggin' ya, brother.
will |
Another one that always gets me is Bob Marley's "Waiting in Vain", in the unrequited catagory. Like many such, the lyrics don't necessarily look like poetry on the page - it's the overall effect with the music and singing which tugs at you.
Hey Dekay (and others), aren't sex songs a different thing than love songs?
P.S. - Hate to be the first jerk to publicly state the obvious (and TEHO & IMO and all that), but more than a few of the nominations above can't help but drive home for me the fact that being into sound doesn't automatically make audiophiles connoisseurs of great music. ;^) |
