New speakers unveiled from Clayton Shaw - Caladan

As I understand it, Clayton developed these speakers after he parted with Spatial Audio.  At a cost of ~$3K, which is astounding, and a beautify wood baffle, they look sensational.  I heard the sound of them in the video below on my cans and was super-impressed.  They go very low in response as well. I can't wait to hear more reviews of them as I am sure that they will be excellent performers for a really affordable price.  You have lived until you have had OB speakers in your room, which is just my humble opinion.

I am also interested in these new speakers. But someone mentioned what will be the availability of speaker driver replacements if ever needed. This is one of those things I would not have thought about.

I am spoiled in that my older speakers use currently available Scanspeak classic series drivers and I have replaced same in the past.

These have me interested as well.  I don't need them, I don't really have the space for them, I just want them. I like the idea of completing the trifecta of box, horns & OB speakers and owning all of my favorite speaker topologies. That price is super tempting.

My concerns are will these speakers be serviceable in a few years when Claytons health goes south again. I wish him the best BUT this is always a valid concern especially with Boutique one man shows.

I wish Clayton luck, but just an observation - I’d have thought Spatial would have insisted on a non-compete clause or agreement on his departure. In other businesses I’ve been involved with I’ve seen as short as six months, but as long as two years.

Tweak1,

I am blessed in the fact that I kept the speakers I've previously owned, because I couldn't bring myself to let them go. The Infinitys are from 1987, the Thiels from 1999, the Buchardts from 2022. This thread seems the perfect place to state I've purchased the Caladans

@vthokie83

Cool that you can afford to have a stable of speakers. Looking forward to your thoughts... maybe start your own thread

Well, I jumped in and ordered my pair in Maple. It sounds like I am in the December production run, so a couple of months out. Add to my current staple of speakers: Thiel CS2.3s, vintage Infinity RS Kappa 7s (GR Research updated crossovers), and Buchardt Audio S400 MKIIs. All very different with different strengths and weaknesses, why not an open baffle from a manufacturer with an impeccable history of OB speakers

It's Acoustic Lab, but it shouldn't be needed anymore as it comes up without asking for it (at least from the two links cited above).

All the best,
Nonoise

As an early adopter of the X3s (now gone), I’m interested too. I guess I’ve been behind, I didn’t know Clayton left Spatial.

WOW! Imagine orders are racking up and I might jump in as well 😊

I too watched the New Record Day video yesterday with headphones. Been thinking about open baffle for quite some time now. Problem is they can't be more than about 2 feet from back wall in my living room setup which may be a deal breaker.

The Caladan's sound really interesting. I have never owned an OB design, though wanted to add one.....at an affordable cost. These look to fit the bill

I am a HUGE OB fan. My Emerald Physics 3.4s (43" tall) throw an amazing 3D soundstage, outboard XOs. Sadly, no longer made, but the Caladans seem to slide right in, and at a super price point. from the video it looked like the jumpers were very thin. The OEMs when I first got my 3.4s was CRAP wire. I quickly upgraded it to amazing improvement

See them in my Virtual System

so how large is the image from the new speaker?

Smaller baffel "better" image capability.

Two things will have some light shed on them when people hear the Caladans at Capital Audiofest… 1.  How do they sound in a real room…not close mic’s…. and, the speaker is a lot smaller than the big Spatials and other panel speakers… so how large is the image from the new speaker?

As a former Spatial owner… my expectations are pretty high.

I saw the video this morning and for the price, they seemed really impressive. Smaller and lighter than Clayton's previous models yet they go deeper, tighter and now with a seamless crossover.

All the best,
Nonoise
