My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Let's see men.... Just know that it has taken quite a bit of resources to close this deal. It wasn't something that I did rather easy. At these price points , there is nothing that Is going to be cheap even with a significant discount. Everything on that list is serious money.
But we purchase an amp for sound. Who cares what the resell is if it doesn’t sound the best. So sell the Mac and rebuy the Pass 350.5
WC it is great that you do this.  congratulations on your stamina too!

also i am afraid i don't follow what that list means.  that you are going to go through that list of amplifiers over the next period of time?  i do hope so.

also i feel like you have opinions on Essence but can't recall you having one yet (I thought only Coliseum in fact from Gryphon).

i really like your videos.

you change alot of stuff but focus on the amplifier principally here.   i recently changed my amplifier (above 300 hz) and it struck me that it was a very significant change (good) relative to various tweaking i've been doing (cables, isolation etc) and yet actually less costly.

what do you reckon.  with your knowledge now would you take a good amplifier and get all the cables and power right or would you prefer a better amplifier and generic cheap cables.  which one makes a bigger difference?

I had to double take on your comment as you come across as someone who does not subscribe to "smooth"...

My Mytek for $2500 has comparable clarity and is even smoother than my Bryston.

Color me Confused
Klh, I suspect that with the relentless and mephisto we will see similar differences that we saw between the gryphon and the momentum’s. I’m thinking the gryphon will find a new playmate that we haven’t heard yet, though I believe jay has had some of these brands before. I am wondering, I believe he mentioned he had Soulution before, not sure what models, but I have those and was curious how those might stack up to the rest of what he’s tried in the past, not sure I’ve seen his past comments if mentioned, about them.
Ok so Steve Gutenberg just posted a video that has to do with our systems sounding good one day and then we changed NOTHING and the following week it sounds like blah....congested or compressed or nothing like the previous week but yet you haven’t changed a thing ??
Guys, this is something that TOTALLY hits home with me. I am very prone to this phenomenon and i gotta say what works best for me is to go to the gym and get a good intense workout. I come home, take a good shower and eat a meal and THEN sit down and listen again. I am believer that good circulation which is the result of working out TOTALLY helps your ears. I don’t talk about this often but I have done shootouts and never posted on YouTube because I felt they were crappy even though it was the same set up I filmed the night prior where I was blown away.
What do you all do when this phenomenon happens to you ?

Working out with cardio (pouring sweat) always resets my body. I just wrote about that on a A'gon headphone thread. I usually do spinning in my hot garage or play squash (pre-covad).  In the headphone case I was commenting on, I had some ear fatigue pre-workout with one amp. After the workout on the same tracks the fatigue was greatly diminished though still a little there.
yy did you upgrade to the blades, 5000s, or m900u yet? Remember from other threads or maybe here you were planning to do that
Too bad ARC Ref 750SEL not on the list.
I guess it must be Memphisto, as that probably only way WC could be so sure it’ll better the Colisseum
Some of these may be different models than the ones he’s had from the same line in the past, also the memory can be a fickle beast, and hearing them again all together might shine a different light on things, so I wouldn’t bet on the gryphon just yet. There’s some pretty nice sounding equipment listed there, it could be a real shootout.
WC,
Agree with henrycai that it is the power line.  Many people have said the system sounds better after midnight when the power line is cleaner from fewer users.  It depends on what is going on in your neighborhood, so I may be pleasantly surprised at unpredictable times.

Your moods are definitely a factor.  If I listen too much, my mind/ears get accustomed to the sound and there may be fewer delights.  Often, waking up in the AM with fresh ears, gives me the best sound and pleasure.
tweak1,
I should clarify.  My Mytek has almost as much speed as my Bryston while being slightly smoother than the Bryston.  This is just another example of the tradeoff between speed/detail and smoothness.  On balance, I like the Bryston best, but I need the more powerful Mytek for more dynamic music.
Guys,
If you use low distortion sine wave inverters for your stereo.....then you are completely off the grid. The sound will be the same....ALL THE TIME. Except for warm up and mood. Inverters generally sound better than line filters....but you can add a line filter after the inverter for even more pure sound (the inverters might have lower distortion than out of the wall plus line filter......but still produce some noise).

Viber,
If you damp the heatsinks on your Bryston amp (EAR SD40AL works great....available from Percy Audio)....and you changed the fuse to an audiophile fuse.....you would have much better sound. Then maybe you would not even want to upgrade (yeah, right!)....he he. If heatsink fins are all the same size....then it makes more difference to damp them. The heatsinks that Gryphon uses all have different lengths of fins.....very good idea.  If you run your fingernail along the edges of your heatsink and the sound it makes is ZING.....then that is the sound the heatsinks are ADDing to the signal.  When you damp the edges of a Zingy heatsink....it will now sound like Zick.  Zick is better than Zing......much better....he he.
2 days ago i went to audition the Mephisto stereo for the first time at my dealer's.It was paired with EmmLabs DV2 DAC direct, speakers used were BW 800D3 and Wilson Benesch Discovery ll.I can tell you Mephisto is end game amp, it makes the Essence line sound like broken lol.I hope to be able to order this amp this coming winter.Cheers.

Following Ric’s lead, putting your amp (all components actually) on Machina Dynamica Springs would go a long way to improving your systems sound.

Best and cheapest tweak I know of

@whitecamaross
What happened to your praise of passlabs 350.5 and parasound JC1
Has that enthusiasm passed?
I want an amp that sounds great that you dont have to spend thousands on useless cables to sound good. Even lamp wire would do.
@vinny55 sorry but it's been my experience that power cords can make or break the sound of most amps YMMV.
@kren0006 During the last 3 months, I have been building out 2 systems, 1 bedroom headphone and an office system. The 3rd system for the living room will have to wait until after Covaid (no money for that but it will be the Blade2).

I completed the bedroom system and now on the office system build-out. I bought the Benchmark HPA4 preamp and headphone amp. I loved that piece so much that I decided to get an all-Benchmark system for the office. So yesterday I bought the AHB2 amp. I will get a second AHB2 this upcoming week if I get paid (covaid again). I was considering the Luxman m900u for the office but decided on the smaller form factor AHB2. This maybe hearsay around here but I may like the AHB2 as much as the m900u (different sound though).

I also spoke with a new dealer on the NS5000. Since my room is small and also because another poster here with the NS5000 is having standing wave issues in his bigger room I was wondering what to do. I won’t get into too much detail on this thread but I have a plan now to try out the NS5000 or NS3000 (or maybe a hypothetical NS4000) after the dealer hears back from Yamaha. I will get to demo this in my room.

I should add on this thread that I am considering the Luxman m900u | Coda #16 | Purifi based amp for the eventual downstairs Blade2 system. I will give priority to Purifi based amps over the old guard amps.
@thieliste

Very interested in your statement..... "I can tell you Mephisto is end game amp, it makes the Essence line sound like broken lol."

I have been considering the Gryphon Essence stereo amp along with the Simaudio 860a v2 and the Luxman 900U as my next amp. The Mephisto is out of my range.

Did you hear the Mephisto and the Essence on the same day, same equipment, same room?

Would love to hear you clarify your statement. Thx
Cant you make up your mind Ron between Dark(Gryphon), Neutral(sim) and Sweet(Lux) sounding amps? Your ears must prefer one type over the other.
@riaa

How many amps do you own again? lol

I have a Sim 870a now and really love it. I had a BAT VK 500 (dark) for years and really liked it too. Before the Sim I had a Plinius. My speakers are YG's which I thought a sweet amp like the Lux might sound good with. After a lot of talking with Jay he thinks all of those amps would sound great in my system (Sim, Lux and Gryphon). I guess I'd like to try something different for a change. I've had the Sim for 4 years.

With the dozens of amps you own you must have a mix of flavors....I know you hate bass but what's your preference?

Smart, Sexy, Sweet and Stacked.

Oh wait your talking about amps....I prefer them to have the same qualities as yours truly...Sweet, Bright, Euphonic and Sparkling. I have no idea if anything I own meets that description. I just like looking at the pretty boxes stacked to the ceiling in rows.

Thanks riaa, I always find your responses sweet, bright, euphonic and sparkling....well maybe not bright but definitely sweet, euphonic and sparkling!

Why would he want a 10+ Year old amp thats out of warranty and they probably dont have parts for should there be a problem? Ive never a seen a pair even come up for sale before EXCEPT By the previous distributor. Ask him how many he sold at his outrageous prices over a decade ago. Single digit I bet.
Hi guys, yes absolutely we were able to compare the Essence stereo to the Mephisto stereo in the same room with the gear i mentioned above. The gap between the Essence and the Mephisto is huge believe me.Just to give you an idea the Essence is a Jaguar F-Type V8 and the Mephisto is a Formula One car just for comparison.I did hear the Antileon Evo in 2016 in a different configuration with Rockport speakers, it was very engaging but not at the level of the Mephisto.I've heard CH M1.1 and Mephisto is still better for my taste. On the other hand CH L1+X1 is better than Gryphon Pandora no question about that.If things go well i'll be getting Mephisto stereo + CH L1+X1.Cheers.

 @thieliste

Thank you for expanding on what you heard. The Mephisto sounds like one very special amp....still like to hear the Essence. I wonder how the Essence compares to the now discontinued Colosseum? Jay, I know you don't like to comment on something without firsthand knowledge but have you heard comparison talk between the two?
Ron,There is a comparison on the Audio Shark Forum in the Gryphon area. The comments above dont necessarily match up with the comments made by the Gryphon dealer. Surprised Thieliste who is on that Forum as well didnt voice his opinion/experience there.
i have been told the essence is NOT 50 watts per channel. I was told it is immensely underrated by Gryphon. Some say it is AT LEAST 90-100 watts per channel.
One thing you all need to remember, and i have said it MANY MANY TIMES, NOT ALL WATTS ARE CREATED EQUAL.
For example:

Accuphase E800: 50 watts class A
Luxman 509x mk2: 30 watts class A
Luxman murders the accuphase in terms of power and control. The accuphase sounded anemic, lacked balls, drive, muscle, cojones, etc. You all need to stop being too "concerned" with power figures when these power figures are from top amplifier manufacturers such as Gryphon. I can probably bet money that the essence stereo can drive a ton of speakers out there without a problem. However, if you are sitting 27 feet away, and you are almost deaf then you might want to buy something more powerful. @ron17...You  listen at 75db so ummmm.... you should be the last person to worry about the power figures of the essence Ron.
I am trying hard as hell to bring an Essence home, but it is being quite protected and not  on display.
If it makes ANYONE HERE feel better, i bought Gryphon blind folded and have never LOOKED BACK. I wish i could buy a pair of Mephisto monos and then close this thread so i can focus on preamps maybe?

Funny how @riaa rails on Philip O'Hanlon on Luxman, when he just happens to be the current Gryphon distributor and doesn't say a peep about that.

Distributors are a middle man for international brands, most of us understand that. It is difficult for most brands to distribute directly and hence why almost all European and Asian brands have one - which naturally makes them more expensive. If you are in Europe, look at US brand prices sometime and be prepared to be shocked.

If you want to buy all US gear, be my guest. But to continue to disparage distributors like this is silly. Especially when you still bought Accuphase, which is easily the biggest distributor rip off of all time.

Dont get what your angle is at all. I have no idea what Gryphon prices are in Europe vs USA as Im not remotely interested in the brand or any Dark Sounding gear.
I got my Accuphase for about 10K lower than the MSRP although I am not sure where your going with any of this anyway. Completely off topic.
Jay, I'm not worried about power ratings (after our talk a couple of days ago).  I asked if you had heard any comparisons between the Essence and the now discontinued Colosseum.
i have not heard any direct comparisons unfortunately. i have not even seen the essence in person.

If this serves anyone as a point of reference, this is what i understand about the the 3 top gryphon amps:

Antileon(evo, signature, original antileon) very tube-like analog sound. It does not have the lowest floor noise out of the 3 top amps. A little warmer sounding, but with awesome resolution nonetheless.

Colosseum: Less floor noise than Antileon. More "lively" feeling to the music and not dark as the Antileon. It adds more resolution in general than the antileon (although some say the antileon evo is a new beast now).

Mephisto: Faster sounding than Antileon and Colosseum. Monstrous bass control that easily separates all low end frequencies to the point that you can almost hear the different "HZ" of the bass lines. More resolution than Antileon and Colosseum. It closes the "holes" int the presentation that might exist in the Colosseum and Antileon (if you can find these holes of course).  ONE MILLION MICROFARADS of capacitance. what does this mean? it means it has more capacitance than FIVE (YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT)  five parasound JC1+ MONOBLOCKS COMBINED.

Hope this helps.
thieliste,
What is your taste, and how is the Mephisto better than the CH M1.1?  According to Mike Fremer, the CH has vastly different tonal signature depending on how much negative feedback (NF) is used.  More NF = colder/detailed sound, less NF = warmer sound.  Did you try the different NF settings to compare with the Mephisto?  Was your listening done at home or at the dealer?
Video tonight in about 30 min:
Momentum HD preamp
With
Parasound jc1+
Merrill Audio element 118s

I will not say what is playing until later this week. Choose your preferred sound.
Whatever was done on number one, dosnt need to be repeated, lol. I don’t know if it sounds way different (better) in the room, but on the video, it just didn’t work at all. Im assuming different cable combo this time. I’d go back to what was used the first time if so. And a great example of just how much effect the proper, or improper match or tweak can make, whatever the changes might be.
Competition for Mephisto solo: Soulution 701, CH precision M1.1, XS 300, Boulder 3050, D’Agostino Relentless.
Same cables and amps...only difference was that I did what people requested. Many people said " oh don’t use a tube amp that isn’t even broken in blah blah blah " so please use the momentum HD preamp. Well...that is what I just did and now people are seeing how IMPORTANT system matching is. This exercise has nothing to do with anything else other than system matching and synergy. It seems clear that the magnepan seem to like a tube linestage. I hope that is something that a few have quickly learned ?
