Coda's probably wonderful BUT whats the resale value compared to what you paid for it? THATS the problem. Not much of a discount (if any) on Boutique brands like Coda, Bakoon, Valvet etc You will lose a HUGE chunk of your investment when you ditch it. Thats what keeps this investor savvy audiophile wannabe away. |
It’s still shocking Coda is at least as good as the majority if not better then the amps above but not even a mention . there are still many not up on Audio who don’t even know Coda has been making very high quality Audio electronics for over 35 years ,in many cases for other companies like Sanders, Legacy , and very little advertising over 50% is sold in Europe, and the Far East. all starting Waay back with Nelson Pass with the classic Threshold Stasis Amplifiers and by far one of the best warranties in the business 10 years, 5 years transferrable. |
I agree with many of the difference above. I like both for the own strengths. The Gryphon is really impressive out of the gate but for the long haul I think I’d opt for the D’Agostino gear. The #1 think for me is for the system to do no harm. By that I mean if there is any annoyance at all then I don’t want it. That annoyance will continue to grow if it is there. The Gryphon Mephisto does check all the audiophile boxes very well as does the D’Agostino. However I just think the D’Agostino will have less ear fatigue and is a sound I could listen to for hours, regardless of what it doesn’t do. Very musical. All this is based on the video and I’m sure I could be happy with either as they are that close in their ability to provide outstanding music reproduction. |
OK WC, understand what you are saying in your above rant. However, in yesterday’s post, you presented it as: "Gryphon Mephisto versus Dan D Agostino Momentum m400s tonight at 7pm eastern time." I think when you present it that way, it appears to be an amp comparison, rather than a presentation comparison. Perhaps some folks haven’t followed you long enough to know that you don’t always have the same cables, accessories, etc. on each side, when there’s a comparison like this. Dave |
Jay, we understand, just conveying some possible suggestions. To return to your comparisons, after listening again, I can tell you that overall I still prefer Boulder preamp/amp to everything else. Not without flaws but it just sounds closer to reality to me, even if this reality is not perfect. Both Gryphon and D'Agostino make the reality sound 'nicer' than it is. Boulder combo is ruthless. So it's Boulder - first place, D'Agostino - second place and Gryphon - third place. That's how it is for me. |
Don’t worry man...nobody is making buying decisions over these heavy hitters...just listen with your own ears and make your own conclusion. You are simply choosing whichever presentation you like. Don’t overthink it or make it more complicated than what it already is for me. I presented 2 systems and you are just choosing whichever you like. If we are to embark on which Powercords should go with which amp or which speaker cables etc etc then when would I finish and be able to present something to you? We aren’t making life decisions here.. It’s a pandemic, everybody is bored, unable to hear any of this stuff and the rest of the youtube channels just do this: blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah and then thank you for listening and until the next episode. I’m the only person doing these shootouts on youtube especially with these components. Maybe i should sit in between my boulders and alexx and say blah blah blah blah blah blah blah and then end my video at the 10-15 min mark? Trust me it is much easier to sit and talk talk like other channels do. It’s much harder to lift these amps, buy stands, all the cables and everything else that goes into this production. There is nothing easier than to grab a chair and sit there between my equipment and talk about random stuff: using boulder amps as a coffee table, using the Mephistos heatsinks as a kitchen knife. Can the Mephisto boil water or cook an egg if i placed it on top while it is running full bias ? It never ceases to amaze me how some channels stay relevant and with a nice amount of subscribers when all they do is talk and then sometimes they talk about dumb topics: " Are you an audiophile if you own a a walkman?" " Do you have good ears if you own a bose stereo" " Do you listen to your music standing or sitting down" I don’t get it... Maybe this is rant but with some validity behind it. |
From what I read you are using Nordost speaker wire with the Gryphon along with Gryphon interconnect......whereas with the DAG amps you are using all Synergistic cables? And what power cords are on the DAGs? So, we are not hearing just the amp differences? And of course, the DAGs are on top of another amp and not directly on a stand. Confusing. I thought it was a shoot out of amp versus amp. How can anyone learn the differences of the amps if there are so many variables? |
I also have an impression, and not just of this comparison but anytime when I hear Mephisto in your system, that Gryphon imposes itself instead of leading the way and making the speakers sing. It tries to sing itself through the speakers. But still, I would pair Mephisto with Gryphon preamp and D'Agostino with D'Agostino preamp, and would play more with cables and cords to find the best possible match. "Get rid" might've been a little harsh, I agree, I was just articulating the point. |
Votes are 12 for gryphon and 4 for dag on the comments. To say " get rid of Mephisto" seems a little way out there if we go by what everyone is selecting. I find it interesting to see how the general public feels about brands in general. I have my own preferences of course ,but I am always curious to see what other people hear. Preferences are key. When it comes to the video of the momentum with and without footers, the results are in: Presentation #1 - 56% Presentation #2 - 44% You will soon find out which presentation had the footers. This is WHY i love blind tests. It eliminates the "bias". |

Interesting on previous video. I preferred presentation #1. Heard more detail there and also thought more musical, and by musical I mean the timbre of instruments sounds closer to me - kinda paradoxical I guess but that’s what I heard. Also thought better soundstage with #1. Looks like I'm the first vote for #1 on this thread |

@whitecamaross I'm a lifetime Tannoy loyalist, running Canterbury GR, but I'm incredibly interested in the Fyne Audio F12 since Fyne is kind of the "new" Tannoy - formed after the previous Tannoy engineers got fed up with (or let go by) the new Behringer ownership (and their push towards cheaper Chinese manufacturing). Bring in those F12 man! See how these amazing amp evaluations change with that kind of efficient & coherent transducer. Blow our minds, man. Lol. |

Not me Ron. I have 12 or so currently. Why?? 1) I like to collect depreciating assets 2) I hate unused floor space 3) When my heat pump goes on the fritz I stay warm by plugging in all my amps and using them as space heaters around the house. 4) When Jay gets bored with the Big Amps/Speakers and switches to Low Watt or SET Amps and appropriate matching speakers I will have everything he needs. I could probably keep going for awhile..... |
I loved your "Worst of the Worst". Our hobby would be in much better shape if we'd had a review industry with the guts to call out gear that sounds plain bad or even outright WRONG - instead they politely skirt around the issue or even pile on insincere compliments. So too many manufacturers have gotten away with making bad sounding gear for far too long. You now have more high-end experience than almost any reviewer, so your "worst" list is very meaningful, insightful, and entertaining. Only complaint is that the video took quite a while to get into the actual list. Also I'm still rocking the ARC Ref 6 I bought from you like 5 years ago - even wore out the 1st remote, on #2 now lol. |
