Is it considered to be good to include second hand speakers? Service provided on out of warranty products says a lot about a company. Thanks for any opinions.
If a product is under warranty, even if the product is sold, many companies honor that warranty. PS Audio or Chord are great examples. As long as you have the bill of sale from original purchase, they will cover repairs under warranty.
If a product is out of warranty or an issue is due to obvious consumer error (Magicos are front heavy and easy to tip when moving) why would a manufacturer service that product for free? I am not saying they should make a profit on the repair, but it seems reasonable to charge for parts and labor?
Everything I hear about Magico is they help their customers (new or used) and charge fair prices for repair parts. You may not like those prices, but if you have a pair of parcelscout speakers that are $40K new, it shouldn’t shock you if a tweeter costs $800. Honestly, if I bought a $40K pair of speakers and a tweeter cost me $50, I would be unhappy.
That being said, it is a great question to ask. I can think of a particular amp manufacturer that is openly hostile to people who purchase used products and literally does not honor their warranty for some first time buyers. You won’t have that issue with Magico.
I would be quite fine with Morel building the drivers to Magico specifications, and Magico design. Morel, is likely to have better processes and quality control capability since drivers are their specialty. It is not different from any other contract manufacturing. In-House manufacturing is often not a recipe for a better product.
The drivers are outsourced. The tweeters are modified scan speak designs. I believe that the woofers areodified morel units. They have bespoke carbon graphite cones. Magico is not upfront about its driver sources. jnt track and trace
kenjit, a Bugatti is just a car with a engine and some tires right? Your garbage analogies are just that, garbage. Urbie, no matter how much you want it and wish for it, Monitor audio speakers do not sound as good as Magicos, sorry I have heard them and it's not even close. monitors are not bad speakers, they just don't sound as good as Magicos latest offerings. Magicos are a great product that actually jusify their place in the market, unlike so many other manufacturers.
I'm not that impressed with magical for the money it's way overpriced and it sure is ugly looking just metal boxes at least monitor audio platinum has 11 layers of hand polished lacquer on it and there's still only one quarter of the price and sound just as good or better than anything magico makes. And incidentally monitor audio has a team of 20 engineers designing all their drivers so everything is in house, and they also have two anachoic Chambers one in England one in China which cost a million dollars each to build.
Yes I'd like to see a picture of your system kenjit because I don't mind telling people what I have and showing a picture as well and I haven't got the most expensive system in the world but mine is worth $60,000 Canadian.

I thought Magico drivers were made by Morel? I read the mids and woofers were, so i figured the tweeter too. Not surprising, the tooling and process for making drivers is expensive.
And since magical don't even make their own cabinets they're outsourced and they don't make their own drivers are very overpriced anybody that would pay $100,000 for a speaker is an idiot when their speakers out there that are quarter of the price like monitor audio Platinum that are way better.
Few years ago in Munich, both the M6 and the Lyra were demoed with Soulution gear. There was a clear consensus as to which room sounded better. I know that Soulution bought an M6 after that show and is now designing and showing with it.
Stiffness also has to do with the thickness of the product. I am not arguing with science. I am just stating from my experience. I would still take an S series speaker over the A series but yoy need ro get to the S5 to match the A5.
creditingkarma, You can beg to differ with science and facts (it is a popular trend lately ☹), but aluminum is still stiffer then MDF no matter how you feel about it 😉 Agree with you on preferences to each is own (but facts are still facts).
I would beg to differ on the stiffness of the cabinets. Rockport and magico both have very rigid cabinets. I have owned both brands. The S series is better than A to my ears and some of this is due to the cabinet design. The A series is all parallel surfaces. The S and M do not have parallel surfaces nor do Rockports.
The A5 is a great speaker but I just don't hear it being as good as everyone is making it out to be. Different people have different preferences. I enjoy my choice of speakers and am also happy to support a company that is owned by great people. There are lots of great people at Magico too (there is one polarizing personality at the company).
creditingkarma, It not about how "dead" the cabinet feels, it’s about how stiff it is while not ringing. All Rockport enclosures, up to the Lyra, are not rigid enough. That is why they sound soft. The Lyra enclosure is indeed impressive, but the value proposition is poor. I get 95% of what it offers in the A5.
There is no comparing the A5 to the Lyra. The Lyra enclosure is way above the A series or even the M series in my opinion. The damping within the two aluminum enclosures is really incredible. I actually find the Rockport MDF enclosures to be more dead than the A or S series.
At the end of the day both companies make incredible speakers.
I have heard the Rockport many times and even owned a pair way back then. Lovely speakers, but ultimately a bit too ‘soft’ for my preferences. BTW, the most impressive part of the A5 is the midrange. The bass is excellent, but the midrange is a game-changer. Interesting that you mention value; you will have to spend $170K with Rockport to get the A5 driver compliment in an aluminum enclosure 😉
as a diy speakerbuilder, i always look at how a commercial loudspeaker is designed and manufactured. Magico's engineering and use of materials has been "next level" since they first entered the market. but customer service is huge for someone laying down that much money for a high end product. I never had to deal with any hifi customer service before except for Welborne Labs but they went out of business. all companies should strive for top notch customer service. i bet Mcintosh has great customer service since they have been around for decades. the appeal to that company is probably more than just those blue VU meters.
Kenjit, Magico have probably read some of your posts and want nothing to do with you and your superior audiophool skills. By the way, what model Aiwa system do you listen to?
I have heard the A5 setup correctly. I actually preferred the S1mkII sonically over the A5 it is a more refined sound. I think the big wow factor to the A5 is is slam from the 3 woofers. I would take the S3mkII over the A5 any day of the week for my preference.
I was able to audition the A5 and Atria II in the same system with the same electronics and chose the Atria over the A5. I wish I preferred the A5 as it could have saved me close to $6k.
I am also aware that Andy uses the scan speak tweeter and he is very transparent about the drivers that he uses. The magic with the tweeters in his speakers is in his wave guide. I have nothing but great things to say about magico speakers. I just had an opportunity to trade up to the Atria before magico does something like discontinue the S1mkII and then the value would go down. It was an incredible speaker in the small space that I previously had and recomend it easily. The same goes for the A1, A3, and A5. It comes down to preference at this price point. I just found the rockports to be more enjoyable than the A5 and with a pair of JL fathoms I have more than enough bass.
Enjoy the A5 and hopefully you will get a chance to hear some rockporta at some point in time too.
I am afraid you are indeed mistaken. Both the M and the A-series tweeters are proprietary. These are different from the S series and have a bigger dome, with and without the diamond coating (28mm vs. 26mm) and two completely different motor systems. The S tweeter is built for Magico by SS (Your Rockport is also using that SS tweeter but with the regular SS dome). I just bought the A5, and they are undeniably incredible and worth all the “overhyped” surrounding them. I can only assume you have not heard them set up properly if you missed that.
The tweeters are not proprietary. They have a diamond coating but the motor structures are from scanspeak. If ypy look at the driver outside of the speaker you can see this. I used to own the S1mkII which has the diamond coated driver. The a series is not the diamond coated dome. I am not spreading missinformation here. I frankly dont care who makes the drivers. Magico speakers sound good and that is what matters. I do have a sneaking suspicion that the A series are made over seas for the most part with finally assembly done here in the USA.
The only issue that I have with magico is the way that they increase prices. The price of all the A series are going up again. The A5 was just released less than a year ago and they are already increasing the price. It is a good speaker but I think it is a bit overhyped. If I go back to Magico it will be for the M2 but that is a hard sell with the price increase especially with the Cygnus being less money and a much more substantial speaker.
Magico M and A series tweeters are proprietary and are not anyone ’modified’ tweeters. This thread has lots of misinformation in it—a pity. There are better forums to explore when it comes to Magico.
The drivers are out sourced. The tweeters are modified scanspeak designs. I belive that the woofers areodified morel units. They have bespoke carbon graphine cones. Magico is not up front about their driver sources.
Hi All, I have a second hand pair of V3s. I had a problem with one crossover after they were shipped cross country to me. I wrote to Magico and got prompt and courteous service from their VP for Global Sales and Marketing. He was super responsive, friendly, courteous, and helpful. He actually offered to come by and help me optimize my listening room when he was in the area.
My experience as a second hand owner was superb and their response to me a second hand owner of an older model has made me a huge fan....

So it’s MASTER Kenjit now? Truely rich! Bwahhh! That is just over the top, even for Kenjit. I’m mostly a lurker here and have been for quite some time. I had to respond to that. When I see you’re ‘Thinking Einstein’ I go onto the next poster. i’m probably missing something because once in a while I see somebody complementing you for what you’ve said. It’s too much though to try to deal with your giant Ego and negativity. K get the therapy you NEED!
Always heard great words about this company, products.
I do on the other hand judge a company by their treatment of customers. Most companies do a 90 day or a 2-5 year warranty with fine print, under controlled use, not with damage to drivers or products (for which the company will make that decision)
im not bad mouthing any particular company, but a blanket on most manufacturers. It is the manufacturers choice on the warranty, 1 year or etc,....
the company should cherish its customers, treat them well, for choosing to spend money on their products, regardless of price!!,
I had a few drams one night, and overpowered my speakers, one of the crossovers ceramic thingies (2” long, white, rectangular soldered think was black and fried on the crossover. I wrote the company, sent a picture, spoke on the phone with a tech a few times over about 5 days. gave my address, name etc etc, model number, kept calling, and being honest with them , spoke with another gentleman about the warranty and what had happened...
he appreciated my honesty, another couple phone calls, and a couple days later crossovers and tweeters showed up, free of charge. I wrote several handwritten letters to the company, and the people who I spoke with,..and sent emails as well to several of the people who helped me. It is THIS SERVICE which keeps me coming back (unfortunately the fine company was purchased and folded by the purchasing company). When it comes to treating customers well, it should be paramount to their reputation and company rules.
I’ve always had issues trying to get any warranty work on %90 of my purchases as I’m sure most of you all have!?
Even the smallest receiver from well known companies treat you like the bubonic plague if you request warranty service.
I try to only purchase items from companies I know have a great track record. It is hard and almost not possible, but I’ve done pretty well in that dept.
companies should take the very best care of their customers. For the negative Nancy’s - this is my opinion, and my experiences, I’m not dumping on any specific companies.
Its called a rip off, plain and simple. Who in their right state of mind would pay that much for a speaker, let alone a driver. With all the cheaper and better looking options available, you have a choice. They price them high because some will buy the hype and pay. Why would they lower the price to reflect what you are actually getting when some are paying the asking price? Ugh....they are not using drivers made from another planet or universe. They do not know things that others do not know about. Personally, their speakers look awful in any setting. Their are others like them, all ugly and overpriced boxes.
I had to replace a woofer in my s1mk2 in warranty. Magico sent the woofer to my dealer who came out and replaced it. Let me tell you it is not easy to get the drivers out. I was told if it was not a warranty problem magico would charge $800 for the driver. Peter at magico answered emails quickly.
I now have Rockports and can say that when I called them either Andy, Josh , or John amswer the phone. For my money they also build a better speaker right now too. heck Andy still services his old turn tables.
BOSE are even cheaper, and much bigger than Monitor audio, they as well
beat speakers four and five times the price, and when something goes wrong, they send you a whole new product, not just a driver!
JB Hiller their Platinum line is phenomenal sounding that AMT tweeter is so sweet and accurate and warm I have the Platinum 200 Gen 2 and I can tell you this they're Platinum line will beat speakers four and five times the price from any other company.
Monitor audio platinum drivers are even better than Magico, read the white paper on their technology in the Platinum and they don't charge an arm and late for their drivers but then monitor audio is 10 times as big as Magico will ever be. Monitor audio even has two anachoic Chambers one in England one in China that cost a million dollars each to build so you can see who the better company is. And if your speakers is in warranty the drivers are free of charge.
I made my earlier post to try and make clear that in my experience it doesn't matter if your Magico speakers are out of warranty or were purchased second hand, but that Magico and us Magico dealers will treat you the same and take care of you.
Reading some of the followup posts about replacement costs....
A V2 driver isn't USD $1400, but maybe that was including labor, or it was purchased through a dealer who marked it up a bunch when they shouldn't have? Or maybe there were international shipping costs or import taxes if outside the US?
And no, replacement Magico drivers don't cost tens of thousands of dollars.
@4425 maybe find out who your local Magico dealer is, and then do some research on how well they treat customers who are just calling for service and not to purchase anything? Maybe read some online reviews of them, or give them a call. That's might be the best way to find out what sort of service you would get in case you needed help with a pair of secondhand Magico speakers that are out of warranty.
@mschott... you got me. My day job as a tradesmen is just a front. My real passion is shilling Revel gear via late night forum posts. Just sharing my experience as it seems to be uncharacteristically positive in the world of hi-fi... now back to the interwebs to tell tall tales about Revel.
