Rleff, with the new Toroid II's the speakers are a lot easier to drive, to the point that MA-1s are fine and dandy. You are welcome to call me for more info.

I would put together my "dream system" from the days when I first became involved in this obsession, (1990ish,) and a two versions of current state of the art, one tube based, and one solid state based. I would likely derive more enjoyment finding the used components for my early 90's dream system than I would assembling a modern state of the art rig. It would be nice to see how close the twenty year old setup could come to the latest, greatest. I'm betting, pretty close. B&W 800s, or Sonus Faber Extremas would be my starting point, and I would work back from there. I'll need a fourth system too, electrostat or ribbon based...big Apogees, anyone? How ever much money I would have at my disposal, it's against my nature to buy extraordinarily expensive gear that depreciates faster than Cyprian banking confidence. |
I would buy a restored 1947 Capehart radio = phonograph. I am so impressed with the Erb designed record changer that could play a stack of 16 records , play both sides and continue over and over or stop and shut off. It would do all this with speakers and remote radio selection from many other rooms . All tube electronics and seperate amps for by amped Jensen speakers. And then maybe a all McIntosh or Audio Research system like I had ten and fifteen years ago. I could afford the Capeheart but I need a room to put it in,I moved in this smaller house when I retired. But to see that changer in action , just touches a nerve. So as long as we are playing I'll add to the wish, Thanks David |
03-26-13: Mofimadness Sorry about that ya'all - MBL paid me big bucks to put a CD into their system. ;) |
Rrog, Firstly, I apologize for misspelling your username in my last post - darn carless of me. "What would you do?" I would seek to improve the musical experience in every way that it touches my life. I would certainly enjoy more live music and endeavor to discover new talents before they became large venue celebrities. I would also commit to building a music system that conveys musics inner truths as I perceive them to be. I would expand my music library manyfold. Not just because of my passion for older music, but because of the influence that older music has on my appreciation for newer music. One always gains insight into something new, when it can be appreciated in the historical context of its evolutionary journey. |
"Prog, or? Why do you regard them as mutually exclusive?" My comment was about a short list of artists. My point was how many times can you listen to the same thing over and over and over again. Nothing to do with the two being mutually exclusive. I know there are many folks with huge record collections they picked up for 99 cents a copy and it makes it hard to pay real world prices for new music, but this thread is about winning a lottery and having enough money to do whatever you want. What would you do? |
For myself I would love to buy Atmasphere's MA3's with his pre amp driving soundlab's current top of the line speakers in a room setup properly for the best listening enviroment possible;not to sure on the sources though but that MBL player sure looked very nice and of course turntable/cartridge combo as well. |
"Yeah, but that is a free choice. Not a valid criticism. The fact one can explore nearly endless old music, is just as valid as chasing all over Hell and back listening to 'new' music. Making the mistake of thinking what you want is the best for anyone else?" From the person who thinks it's ok to believe your stereo system sounds better than live unamplified music and now I am informed my criticism is not valid. |
One of the problems lottery winners have is the inability to enjoy old pleasures in the same way they used to. They often wind up less happy. If I had the ability to assemble a "cost no object" system I'm not sure I'd enjoy it more than my relatively modest but personally tweeked system that gives me so much pleasure now. |

I'd have the house and room built then fly in the designers of my favorite equipment and then have a garage built so that every bit of equipment was built in the garage then tranfered to the listening room. Even the boxes would be made there in case I ever wanted to move my never shipped items. I'm just getting warmed up for this first stereo, the next one would really be crazy. |

I'd have two systems: an mbl set-up like in the video (thanks mofi!) in a custom built soundproof room designed specifically for the mbl set-up. I heard that rig at rmaf and it is my favorite stereo I've heard in my entire life. I'd have the room designed by rives audio. My second system would be whatever comes in a ferrari 458 spider (even though the true music comes with the top down at 9,000 rpm ;-) |
I'd buy the MBL reference system and have a custom house built with a custom sound room to put it in. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EN0fkNp4WLs |
