You need to swap the motor. You just learned the hard way that there is a reason to purchase through proper channels. The Rega motor will cost you probably $150.00 you also have no warranty either.
Help!! Bought Rega TT in the UK and now cant use it in the U.S.
So I bought a Rega Planar 2 through Amazon U.K. because it was $175 cheaper than anywhere in the U.S. I feel stupid now because I did not think about the power supply. Can someone please guide me in the right direction as to what some of my options are to be able to use the TT here in the U.S. I dont want to make the wrong move and burn the motor in the TT.

Not sure about Rega, but we’re here using many Japanese turntables, they are all designed for 100 volt, but the outlet voltage in my country is 220v. Japanese turntable manufacturers provide switch between 50 and 60Hz on the turntable. So all i need is a step down transformer. In your case you need a Step Up Transformer from your power outlet in the USA (110v) to your tuntable motor made for UK (220/240v). |
Testpilot I called the store that I bought it from in the UK and all they tell me is to buy a transformer but from what alot of people are saying I need a different motor or a different pulley. This really sucks as I will have to pay for shipping cost if I return it. Is there a possibility that this TT is compatible with both 50hz and 60hz? |
No, it will need 50Hz. You might at least check to see if what Chakster said is correct. Is there in fact a 50Hz/60Hz switch on the motor? (I'd be surprised.) If not, I would think your cheapest option is to spend the $150 for the correct motor. If you return your present unit for full refund, you would still be out the shipping costs, and as you mention, the US price is $150 higher than the UK price. So, that option is not going to save $. |
Best advice is to return the TT as others have said. It's a small mistake and forget the lost money if you can afford to take this approach. Start fresh and buy the right voltage. You'll appreciate this decision a year from now especially when you want to upgrade and can't get market value for an international device. |

Thank you all for the responses. I am just going to return it and save myself more headaches. As one of you said If I try to sell it its gonna be close to impossible. I will be purchasing the U.S. version after I receive my refund. By the way since I will be returning it I now have the opportunity to get something else. Any recommendations on a great entry level TT for the money? Thanks |
If it's a new Planar 2, it uses a 24VAC motor; it would come with a 220V to 24VAC wall wart. You will need to replace the wall wart with a 120V to 24VAC version and get the correct pulley for 60Hz operation. The pulley will have to come from Rega, a Rega dealer or VAR like GrooveTracer. The wall wart can be purchased from Rega, Mouser, Digikey or a number of sources on e-Bay. |
