Aliexpress no longer an option

Anyone try to buy from Aliexpress recently?  I went in to pick up some copper banana connectors, added them to my cart to find out what our new tariffs look like.  $13.00 set of 4 bananas, $1.14 tax, $1.20 shipping and $23.40 customs fee!  That for a $13.00 item.  Trade war has arrived at our door.  Grrrrrrr….

Please reframe from the political debates/opinions I just wanted to inform USA audio shoppers what our China tariff reality is now.

tksteingraber

TDS is a made-up disease.  If not liking a self-serving, incompetent, narcissistic buffoon is called TDS , it is not.  It is called being a decent and caring human being who believes in the same rights for any US citizen, regardless of where they came from or where their ancestors came from..

@gano , +100

@wswright20 so far he is proven so right and I am sooo tired of winning.

People who think they know what trump is thinking

Right, I consider myself a relatively intelligent human being, I never ever pretend I know what he is thinking. Even AI resigns when he is tasked with figuring out if there is anything in his head.

At the end of the road, after all of the tariff carnage is complete, Fat Donnie is going to say that he had no part of it and that all of it was President Biden's doing.  The maga base will fall right in line with that.

He's already done that. Earlier today he tweeted that this was all Biden's fault and that it's all a hangover from his policies. He also claimed credit for the four new EV plants that Ford is building in two different states that Biden started back in 2021-2022.

How long would it take to honestly assess whether the tariffs are more good than bad or the other way around?  Many/most/all countries have had tariffs for a long time.  If they're bad why are they doing it?  People who think they know what trump is thinking but doesn't say are the most absurd.  You are not a mind reader.

It took this long to figure out he's severely damaged the economy and made America the laughing stock of the world. Less than 100 days. As for mind reading that talent is not needed.

 All the best,

As an American, I hope the tariff policies work to our benefit. The problem is,  that is the triumph of Hope over experience. The tariffs we tried in the first term didn’t work. According to conservative groups, those tariffs cost us tens of thousands of jobs and diminished the GDP.

our best hope is that we will negotiate some meaningless deals that won’t actually accomplish anything, but our leaders will be able to declare victory and extricate themselves from the corner they are in.

if we don’t do that, we are going to be in real trouble when China starts dumping treasuries. I also think this will hit American audio manufacturers, hard as well because foreign consumers are simply not going to buy from our folks. Our new friends, Russia And North Korea probably don’t buy nearly as much high end Audio equipment as our former friends.

hopefully, this will end soon with as little damage as possible. It’s not politics, it’s the iron laws of economics.

@gkelly Do you really believe any country’s ability to sell cheaper goods is a form of economic weaponization to destroy other societies?  History defines a cycle of economic growth and inflation that starts with mass unemployment in underdeveloped countries, industrialization with employment of the masses at low compensation producing low quality goods.  As industrialization progresses together with modernization, quality improves increasing international competitiveness.  Just use as an example Japanese transistor radios and cars from the 1970s to now, and the parallel development of Japan’s society and economy, including fair wages.  Unemployment decreases and there is a gradual shift towards fairer compensation and a more developed labor market. Prices increase.  We experienced this in our Industrial Revolution.   We facilitated Japan, then South Korea, where this cycle is very evident.  In China, the cycle is moving forward.  India will become the next China, maybe even more of a competitor since they are focusing on service industries as well as manufacturing.  Our own US companies have fallen short in retooling to be competitive, with less efficient processes increasing manufacturing costs.  Our own US companies as true capitalist moved manufacturing off shores.   Tariffs will not address the issues but rather increase  cost of goods for us (inflation).   The intrinsic issues need to be addressed.   To me reciprocal tariffs is a fair principle (treat others as they treat you), weaponization of tariffs is not.

Such nonsense my 401k is up over  40%.

Never bought a thing from AliExpress zero loss.

I am becoming more convinced every day that the panic and childish name calling over Trump's policies are not because they are afraid he is wrong but rather afraid that he will be proven right!

are you 5 @texbychoice ?

Did you understand my question? How much easier can I make it for you? I really cannot dumb this challenge any lower, easier for you.

All I had asked was: quote something that came out from the White House or trump, today, yesterday or any time that is true. You have not said a thing just dashed all over the map with meaningless, random statements.

I was the one offering to argue if you had anything to argue about. But you are just a robot throwing up the maga talking points without any association to the subject.

Everyone's retirement funds took a $33K hit

A meaningless throwaway comment based on a snapshot in time.  Anybody that makes decisions based on Market swings in short term snapshots is a financial illiterate.  When there is a short term upswing will we hear that reported from you as a real new car in your driveway.  I think not.

Continue the irresponsible spending, fraud, and waste for your children and grandchildren to deal with.  Good plan!

No, he doesn't want to argue because it would be like teaching a pig to sing. By the way, the opposite of woke is asleep. Is that something to be proud of, in this context? You should take the time to investigate what constitutes an argument. It's not one side stating facts and the other side squawking "FAKE NEWS".

@gano

I am sorry I triggered you. I have intention to argue with you, totally pointless.

You write nothing but word salad gibberish.  Great demonstration of intellect, trotting out the tried and true lefty woke "triggered" label. Of course you don't want to argue because you have nothing to offer but empty accusations.

the problem is, it is only political in your eyes and many maga people’s eye. It’s not political. It’s factual. What makes it political is that we have to lie about it.

+1 @gano

Anybody can short the US  and/or scoop in like a vulture when the opportunity arises. Edmund Safra almost doubled his net worth when Reagan gave his state of the union speech. The last thing Reagan said was "and now about the economy." Right then and there he swapped US dollars for Swiss francs and made a killing as Reagan wrecked things, kind of like right now.

All the best,
Nonoise

 Everyone’s retirement funds took a $33K hit (on average)

Not Charles Schwab.  He made $2 Billion after the Orange One said it’s a good time to buy.

- - - -

... We are going to need to greatly lower our standard of living.

Ideally, the key is to lower the Cost of Living - with minimal lowering of our standard of living - not an easy task.  The CoL has aggressively shot up when government deregulation became a mantra.  Guess who started that?   (Hint: There was money to be made by deregulation.)

I am not an economist

You can’t turn around an ocean liner on a dime.

For 20/30 years , US budget deficit soared . Completely Un controlled.

China ´s exportation ( US comercial defecit) filled that big financial hole  . Maximising his industrial structures.    Japan and China owns most of the US tresories.

No tariffs will  bring back US  industrial supremacy. And US is way behind using robots on the production ´s chain.

Chinese are also way ahead about batteries , electrification , etc. Chinese products are not junk .  They were able to ´´ land ´´ on the dark side of the moon.

If you're referring to the $33K figure, I got that from Justin Wolfers, one of the best economists working today. Show me a better one.

Those that suffer from TDS are so intellectually challenged

You mean the people who defend everything he says true or false and prop him up no matter what he does right or wrong?  Like those talking heads on TV?  I’d agree that’s not normal.

You know who else discredited the media? Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Castro, Mao, Idi Amin, Pol Pot, Hussein, Assad, Putin, Isis, Boko Haram, and other nefarious autocrats.

Those that suffer from TDS are the members of his cult. You can tell from their repeated use of the slogan as a backstop to avoid any serious discussion of the matter. Then there's distorted whataboutisms. Child's play.

The one fact that's going to hit everyone in the face is that new, invisible car parked in your driveway. That's right. Everyone's retirement funds took a $33K hit (on average) so enjoy your new ride and keep telling yourself it's all going to be okay. All of this damage from these asinine tariffs.

All the best,
Nonoise

I am sorry I triggered you. I have intention to argue with you, totally pointless. Yes, this administration lies all the time and no you cannot defend it, you are not even trying. But sure, your copy-paste approach of him of look down here, I am distracting you and ignoring the question/our lies makes you feel you accomplished something, good for you and your insecurities....

@gano

And you managed to completely avoid my point though

Your point is perfectly clear.  Make a statement on its face completely ridiculous and without merit.  Then demand a reply to such baseless silliness.  Nope!

Those that suffer from TDS are so intellectually challenged all they can do is repeat talking points fed to them.

Remember the Abraham Accords?  Who was it that wasted a historic opportunity for progress in the Middle East?  I think there was some cognitive decline involved, last name started with a B.  But hey, no problem.  The always perfect news media is now admitting they completely missed the cognitive decline.  What pillars of unbiased and accurate reporting.

I care about facts not fantasy and emotions

And you managed to completely avoid my point though

@gano

just tell me one lie out of the 100s of daily lies that it is isn't

Thanks for the perfect illustration of completely irrational emotion driven fantasy based attitude.

What puzzles me is why people post political content in an audio forum, especially because it's most likely to be deleted anyway. I understand that some claim to not be posting political content, but that only makes it more of a puzzle.

I don't spend much time pondering that puzzle, though. It's not worth it.

Hate to say it but at root cause, it’s all about Trump’s insecurities that drive him to always seek the one up on everyone no matter what.  It’s a psychological disorder at the root in my humble opinion.  But we elected him regardless so whatever happens its really on us.  Maybe we will learn to actually pay more attention to what people we elect to important positions actually say and do and what consequences to expect accordingly.

Naaaah....too much work!   Attention spans ain't what they used to be.

There are so many great quality parts available from US suppliers, for a couple of bucks, there's really no reason to be buying banana plugs from Ali in the first place.  IMHO.   Now there may be many other valid reasons to hate tariffs, but this is not one of them.

This is an interesting point which I cannot verify. Are most of the parts needed in audio available from US suppliers, and so the question comes down to cost alone? I am not on the repair or manufacture side of things, so I don't know.

If you live in American now get used to “pain and suffering”. Recession if we are lucky, depression if we are not. BTW as an extension of our policy now, other countries citizens will experience “pain and suffering “. Don’t believe me? Just ask one of the 20,000 laid off UPS workers or the farmers in Nebraska who are losing their farms.

Equal trade with everyone is a crazy idea.  Its like a business saying I will not buy the things I need to run my business that I can’t produce myself from any other business that does not buy the same amount from me.   Or the other business saying the same.  It’s completely bonkers and so is any "businessman"  who should know better but apparently does not.

There are right and wrong ways to do everything.   Doing things of this magnitude wrong has tremendous consequences which is why a smart person would not do it the way it is being done.

Lack of common sense

just tell me one lie out of the 100s of daily lies that it is isn't, that there is a way to see it semi-factual, prove me wrong. I am satisfied with ONE.

@tksteingraber  You opened this can of worms.  Asking to avoid political debates is like trying to reason with a 3 year old.  Not possible.  Lack of common sense and inability to understand anything beyond the end of one's own nose will always result in the response you see.
