$5K KUZMA TONEARM FOR ONLY $690! Gryphon Diablo for Only $699!

Audiogon is being infested by scammers! These are obviously fake ads designed to steal your hard-earned dollars. The thing that really irks me is that they were allowed to be posted. They all come from new members with zero feedback.

aisip

Verify by contacting the seller. Could just be simple keying errors. Both listings look legit otherwise. Clearly, something going on.

A link would have been nice to see what the fuss is all about-

Might help if new members had to wait at least 30 days before posting....

I don’t think that would help. If your inclination is to be a low life, scamming piece of crap, 30 days won’t change that.

@aisip has a good point …. Looks like the ad is down!

Looks like the alleged bottom-feeder scammer fled the scene after being called out. If so, then kudos to @aisip and he should get some kind of civil service award IMO

👍.

@tablejockey,

It isn’t keying errors.  That same ad was also posted a week ago, I messaged the person saying it must be a typo. Never heard back.

Sad thing is - even if the user id gets flagged the dirt bag might likely create another user id and repeat his antics.

Buy from legitimate,  verified dealers.  It might mean paying a few dollars more, but service and after-sale follow-up can make the difference worthwhile.

It would not hurt my feelings if you had to wait a day, or at least until someone at Agon had a chance to review and approve listing(s) before they were allowed to post.

I hit buy it now on two items that were listed in Hayes, KS a week ago.  That is about a four hour drive from me.  It was a Hegel H390 and a decent Project turntable.  I figured the worst that could happen would be I spend 8 hours of my time driving.  Within 5 minutes of committing I received an email asking to pay.  I responded that I would be picking them up in person and paying cash.  Silence.  Next morning I woke to an email from Agon saying the auctions had been cancelled and the user suspended.

A few days later a Gryphon integrated showed up in Ames, IA.  Another 4 hour drive.  I hit buy it now and again five minutes later a request to pay.  I ignored it and went to bed.  Again the email from Agon that the listing was cancelled the next morning and the user suspended.

Now when one of these listings shows up and I go to view it I’m already blocked from bidding.

They only show up at night, presumably because they are not being screened.  So carry the load and bid on these so no one can get scammed and ignore the supposed sellers.  The listings will go away the next morning.

These super low priced ads for quality equipment have been showing up almost daily for awhile now. I’ve personally reported six or seven. Beyond the ridiculously favorable price, the seller will have joined in the current month of the current year. Not deterred? Just go to HiFi Shark and search for the item of interest. Be sure not to filter out other countries. If you look close, you will find the exact photos used in the current Audiogon listing, typically in a completed listing from another country. Lately, this site is littered with fraudulent listing for equipment at prices too good to be true. Last night’s barrage, was the first time I’ve seen so many ads all together. Scammers are getting more desperate. Buyer beware.

i bought a dozen diablo 120’s... they should be delivered any day now! weird thing is i am getting alibaba/china post tracking through the port of dalian... hmmmmm

What is the fee to place an Ad' No Fees are a magnet to a Scam Sale.

The Scam Items will most likely diminish if a charge is to be incurred.

When I challenged one seller of the many received Scam Sale contacts made, following my inquiry as a wanted Ad' for a Cartridge from a few years past, the Scam Seller contacted me and asked what was it with all my issues, just send the 700 euro's. Interestingly a contact has very recently been made through this forum for the same Cart' wanted inquiry.

Yes, I agree more needs to be done. I have been ripped off multiple times to the tune of thousands of dollars (hard work at an hourly wage by this un-retired, hobbled working senior citizen) and had PayPal side with a scammer on a McIntosh integrated because the scammer delivered a .10 pound package to general delivery in my mailing address’s city of record. AG was no help.

Scammers will always be with us.

As they are rarely caught the best solution is to drastically up the penalties for those who are.  The US is very good at severe penalties.  Shall we say 3 years prison for a first offence, 20 years for the second?

But we must just all be on our toes and operate safeguards.  As has been said, if the offer is a crazy bargain it must be a scam.  Scammers rely on our greed.

It isn't going away. As a matter of fact, it will probably get more intelligent. All you can do is protect yourself. Be vigilant. Don't buy if it doesn't seem right. Not buying it on the front end is much easier than buying on the back end and asking someone to correct the indiscretion. You can not expect the moderators to fix all of the unsavory transactions.

same thing happened on ebay but in that case it was account theft (at least thirty) with which the scammer or scammers sold the same items with misleading titles and payments external to ebay; I reported the scam to ebay with links and screenshots for several months and the staff never did anything until I picked up the phone and was able to talk to a real person who took an interest in this problematic case which resulted in blocking the ads permanently scammers ... but I had to fight a long time to get all this.
Today a flight by plane costs relatively little and seeing for yourself the object you want to buy is the best thing!

I have been seeing the ads pop up every night. You are charged when you make a listing but the card might be stolen or you are sent a bill from AudioGon to pay. The ad might stay up a short time before it is caught. AudioGon is aware of the problem and looking for ways to resolve the issue. They are great to deal with compared to Ebay. I goes back to making it more difficult for the honest people to stop scammers. The ads are pretty easy to spot. Cheap price, Free shipping, small description, and the date joined is new. The link below seems still active as of May 20th.

It’s getting worse. Lately on-average I report 5-6 scam ads per night. 100% of those ads are from new ’members’ that joined the site on the same day as they placed the ad. Many offer free shipping and the asking prices are ridiculously low. Most ads have no descriptions other than info that is cut ’n pasted from  reviews and/or manufacturers websites. If the scammers attempt to do any additional editorializing their clumsy and awkward grammar is always an immediate tip-off.

it would be sufficient to help moderation by reporting fake ads, possibly also opening a special thread reporting suspicious ads; do not be afraid to report, report and report again if you want to get the platform clean of garbage, remembering that silence is much worse.
