Who has Luv for the Lyngdorf 2170 and is thinking about the 3400.

Hello All,
I’m coming up on 40 yrs in this hobby, and or obsession of ours, and I started with a pair of Khorns and Macintosh at the age of 12 and Offcourse owned a ton of different gear over the yrs.
I bought a 2170 a little more than 6 months ago and I enjoyed it so much that I quickly realized I don’t really need anything else, solid state, tubes,or even dac’s anymore.I could step off that silly merry go round of amplification and just enjoy music.I was able to utilize the extra money and time and put together a really great sounding network audio system that rivaled the best in analog that I have ever had,I was mainly a analog guy all of these yrs but finally gave it up,I even sold my longtime record collection of 3k records which included many Hot Stampers that I purchased and also several that I found on my own.

So who Luv’s the 2170 and is maybe also thinking about the new 3400.

Happy Listening,
Kenny.

I noticed this on another piece of gear several years ago. My TRL Dude tube preamp. It sounded better with the top off. No kidding. So far I think the 2170 does also. I will evaluate over the next week. Sometimes the initial impression is not lasting 😀

This mod won’t void your warranty!
Looking for some thoughts from 2170 owners, particularly those who had previously used tubed components.  I've been using various solid state pre and amp combos forever, but I was looking forward to switching to a tubed preamp and enjoying that as my next big move.  However, I also recognize the significant benefits of room correction so was planning to add something like a DSPeaker unit (or something else) later on.  Thanks to you guys my other option now is to just sell my current amp and pre and buy a 2170.  Is there anything I'd be missing from not having a tubed pre in my system, or is it all a net positive with the 2170?  Also, I have an old Rega Planar 2 I was looking forward to firing up again in the not-too-distant future, so are the benefits of vinyl compromised or even eliminated by running it through the 2170?

I really thought I was zeroing in on my ultimate 2-channel setup, but now I'm a little uncertain all over again so looking forward to any real-world thoughts here.  Thanks, I think.

As a former 2170 owner and now owning a 3400, I can say after owning it for a month both sonically and feature wise, it is a step forward. You still get the great midrange tone but with improved control of the bottom end (if your speakers are hard to drive). I haven’t even scratched the surface of the enhanced features yet and looking forward to it. My biggest compliment is that I have been waiting to run roomperfect until I have everything dialed in as much as I can...It’s been over a month now and I haven’t even had a desire to run roomperfect yet. It is that enjoyable even without it.
Hello David,

I’m glad you are enjoying your 3400 and Thanks for the update, I’ve been coresponding via email with 4 guys in Europe that are really enjoying their 3400’s as well and they all have replaced 2170’s as well.

Keep us updated as you get your setup dialed in and have more time with it.

Kenny.
@soix

If you read @grannyring thoughts above in multiple posts you'll see what he replaced the 2170 with, and how content he is..

Regarding vinyl playback.  I know Uberwaltz is very happy with the performance.  Me on the other hand, that was the one thing that I did not like about the 2170.  Don't get me wrong, it still sounds wonderful, especially running Room Perfect, but there's a certain warmth & edge that I was missing.  I did not use any tube gear previously, but class A/B amps sounded better in my opinion.

75% on my listening is vinyl, so I moved onto something different.  I will say that if digital is your main source, you will be extremely happy with the performance of the 2170.

Tbh it is hard to remember what vinyl sounded like on my McIntosh but I was using its own, built in phono stage so not a fair comparison to where I am now.
Probably25% vinyl playback, I stream most of my music nowadays so for me the ph10 into the 2170 is much more than "good enough" ...lol.

All I can say really is that I have not thought about looking at any other amp since buying the 2170

I have a question for 2170 owners.

I purchased the 2170 about 4 months ago and overall, I am very happy with the 2170 in my system.  Prior to the purchase,  I sold my Denafrips DAC and am running my digital streamer (Aries Mini) directly into the coax input on the 2170.    I have my music stored as FLAC files on a NAS and also subscribe to Tidal.  Using ROON as the software for streaming.

I recently listened to the Chord Mojo in another system.  It was running through a Mcintosh processor and the stream was from an iPhone.  The sound was really good.    I wish now that I had at least A/B tested with the Denafrips prior to selling but I was using the proceeds to partially fund the 2170.

Anyone using an external DAC with the 2170?  I am interested in comparisons with and without the DAC.

Thanks,

Nick

Nicks25,

I briefly had a Mytek Brooklyn DAC+ and a Musical Fidelity V-90 DAC at the same time as the 2170 (I've owned the 2170 twice, ha), and did do some A/B testing.

Both the DACs above I thought did an excellent job, and sounded wonderful on their own.  I did not like them paired with the 2170 as much as when they were being used with different amps.  The digital inputs on the 2170 always sounded better, IMHO, by a large margin.

I think one of the biggest assets to the 2170, other than Room Perfect, is the way it implements digital processing. In my experience, it's counter-productive to have an outboard DAC and the 2170 at the same time.

I have not heard the Denafrips, and the Mojo I've only listened with headphones, so I can't say for sure how they'd integrate with the 2170, but my best guess would be leas favorable compared to the 2170's own digital processing.

Robert
robelvick,

Quality feedback.   Just what I was looking for (as I sit here streaming with no DAC!). Thanks for taking the time to rspond.

Nick
Nicks25,

I tried 2 different dac’s into my 2170 in the beginning and I got much better results using the digital inputs on the 2170,as others have stated.
I use usb input from a Sotm ultra renderer that’s hooked up via Ethernet in my local network. To me That’s one of the many pluses of using a 2170 or 3400 is not needing or wanting any other Preamp,Amp,or dac.

I’ve recently been able to borrow a couple of top music servers,Lumin U1 and Aurrender W20 to compare to my highly tweaked computer running server 2016,Roon server,Audiophile optimizer,Fidelizer, and most importantly HQ player, the results were even though both of these servers are quite nice and very easy to use neither one beat the sound I’m already getting from my computer especially with all the tweaks in upsampling and filtering that HQ player have.

If you have more questions give me call sometime,

Kenny.
Thanks for the response Kenny.   I was thinking about adding HQ Player to the mix. I will touch base with you next week to get a better understanding of what it offers.

Nick
What exactly does HQ player do? Is it similar to Audirvana and Amarra? I really dig the sound quality of Amarra but it’s just so damn glitchy. Being on the market for as long as it has you would think they would have got it figured out.
HQ player is the best software player and incorporates with Roon as my Library database and also Tidal.
HQ player has the best upsampling and filtering options of any other player including Roon 1.5 and would Probably beat and or rival any hardware upsampling that any Dac uses including playback designs and denefips.

Greatly simplifies my system and not chasing the Dac dragon anymore and having to stimulate the industry with my coins.

HQ player is also greatly supported and upgrades are free to your bought software and is very stable along with Roon.

I’ve never used Audirvana, that’s generally for macs.

Kenny.
Ok I will say it again because it works! Take the top off your 2170 as she loves it.  Frees her up to be all she can be or something like that.  I liked it more and more as the days passed.  Don’t do it if you have kids or pets that can get inside!
Tdai 3400 will not be replacing my set tube amp after all.  Oh well, fraud happens.

Jcarcopo

Care to elaborate a bit why you're passing on the 3400?

I really liked the 2170, but ended up parting ways too.

Robert
I would elaborate, but moderators have and will delete my comments. For some reason they protect a known convicted felon and fraudster, Mark Schifter of Core Power Technology, who attempts to defraud people out of their money while leading them on for 7 weeks.
The grannyring upgraded Teradak power supplies will arrive today. AKA Teradaktals. Bill did a very quick turn-around for me. Thanks! With the recent installation of the HDPlex 400 LPS for the HTPC and the two Teradaktals, I've come to a plateau in development of the system. My Ulfberht center channel will be delivered next Thursday. I can then move all of my B&W speakers to the Family Room. Looking like I'll have the system and listening room like I want it very soon.
I can then move back to my Bullitt Mustang drag car hobby. I got the new motor installation completed and fired it off last week. Track time soon!
@robelvick  I purchased several power conditioners and he acted like he was doing me a favor by getting me the Lyngdorf at a very great price.  He claimed he was friends with Lyngdorf and that if i needed a great deal on any equipment he could get it to me as a favor. After 7 weeks of constant excuses and delays on both the power conditioners and the Lyngdorf I demanded refunds and ultimately was forced to file claims with 2 credit cards and PayPal to get my money back because his bank bounced the refund on 2 occasions.  I already purchased some Nord ncore monoblock amps instead to use in my second system for my Tekton mini Ulfberhts when they arrive or at least thats an option if my set amp wont drive them.
Thanks for the update, so you never got to even try a 3400 yet, great shame.
Real pity you are amongst the ones having trouble getting product from cpt.
I was fortunate to receive an equicore1800 and found it to be a great unit.
Hope your fortunes improve and you get your monies back and eventually can sample a Lyngdorf product.
Good luck
I installed the new display board that Lyngdorf sent me. It was pretty simple and I just had to figure out how to remove the front face plate so I could get at the board to remove and install the new one.

So,  so much better now with the display characters/font so much bigger and now sharply focused no matter how deep into the menu I go.

Big thank you to Lyngdorf sending me the board for the fix. Very good of them. Took me about 45 minutes. Most of that time was figuring out how to get that darn face plate off!
The Grannyring Teradaktals are sounding very good. I'm glad I made the upgrade and appreciate Bill doing the modding for me.
Great to hear Bob! Yes you should be hearing a more relaxed natural tone.   Happy for you and thanks.
Are their any 2170 owners here running Tekton Di and your thoughts?
The 2170 have enough juice for them?
I did in a room 34x22 with 10 foot ceilings. Far more power than needed really. Ran them with absolute ease. Several others here will also chime in as they have the same combo. They are a wonderful team together.
I am listening to the DI with the 2170 right now. As Bill said plenty of power for the DIs. I find the combo outstanding.
I ordered a base pair but now I am thinking I should add the upgrade package at $300 from what I hear, would anybody agree?
Yes. Do the upgrade package. Money well spent unless you're planning to mod the speakers yourself like others have.I used the 2170 with the DIs for several months before upgrading to Ulfberhts. They were awesome. The Ulfs are just a whole different level of awesome. Awsomer? Even the DIs made my B&W 804s sound like poop. I also went through several pretty high-end amps with the DIs before settling on the 2170. And it has PLENTY of power to push the DIs. Some are driving them with 1 watt SET amps satisfactorily. I don't get it, but to each their own.
I did the $300 upgrade. Can’t say how much difference it makes in sound quality since I’ve never heard them without it. If you got the $300 to spare I would do it.
Does anyone have a usb input card they are not using in their 2170? I would like to buy it from you if possible.  Very easy to take out.  Let me know and thanks.  Bill.
I cant see me ever using mine Bill but out of town right now and not back until Saturday.
Let me have a look when I get home but pretty sure you could have it.
Did anybody ever buy a 3400?
Thoughts on it over the 2170?
Particularly interested in the music server aspect as well as any perceived increase in sq.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to run an additional amp with either the 2170 or the 3400? if so can it be another brand or is there a way to add there sda 2400 I am assuming its the same amp in 3400?? Would like to buy one but don't think either will push my theil 3.7's to levels I enjoy.  Thanks,  Dan
I ended up buying the 3400 that was advertised in this thread. Can't fully speak to the sound quality because my coincident pre's are in storage for another month after I complete a year away from my house/job. I'm currently running it with a pair of Klipsch promedia desktop speakers I bought in 1999. Probably the cheapest speakers any lyngdorf product has ever amplified.

Will eventually compare to a pair of 300b coincident franks.

I can answer questions about the media server though.

And @dancastanga, I guess you know more about your thiels than I do (I used to own 2.4s), but an amp that offers 200w per channel at 8 ohms and doubles down at 4 ohms is at least in the recommended range.
Yes, they are rated for 200 to 600 in 4 ohm so mid way, might work. I run a pair of thiel cs 2.7 in another room with a Peachtree Nova 300 which is a great product and thought my next purchase would be a Nova 500 when they come out but then I got the LYNGDORF Bug!! Even the name is awesome! Might have something to do with my recent binge watch of Vikings.
What is the general consensus on best amps for MP-50? same situation in that room, hard to drive Thiel's  cs 2.7 L,R  MCS1 center, cs1.7 rears, 4 power point 1.2's for Atmos,  2 thiel SS2 smart sub's for 2ch and a LFE sub I haven't gotten yet, Can some of you give me feed back on what amps to use? PS also makes a great class D now called the Steller 700M  350 by 8ohn & 700 for 4 ohm, they are monos, same tech smaller model 2ch 140 300 4 ohm, Victory has a 4 channel class D amp that reviewed well, 325 by 8ohm and 650 by 4 ohm and that is per channel. Seems there are a few companies who have invested in really optimizing class D, Or go class AB Classe, ATI, Cary 5ch,  I might need to install  the speakers & order MP-50 and try to get home trials on the amps I mentioned and ones you recommend here. Thank you! all your input is far more valuable than any one is sales chain.  Dan
@cal3713

Could you expand on your opinion of the media server aspect portion please?
I assume it has a wired lan input and can stream Tidal et al?
@uberwaltz Yes, I've got it hardwired (although it can also connect via wifi) and have been exclusively using the upnp input. I stream tidal using bubbleupnp via my phone and an Android tablet. So far, everything has worked perfectly. It automatically shows up as a renderer for the bubbleupnp player, and the player can be used to control the volume, advance track, etc. The lyngdorf (and it's online control interface) report the bit rate accurately. So far, it's been considerably better than ps audios implementation in the bridge 2. With it, I would regularly have problems and have to reboot to see the bridge or fix song cueing (and had to leave my tablet's screen on whenever listening to minimize those problems). All that seems to have gone away with lyngdorf's implementation.

I also learned that they're now implementing a Bluetooth input. It's not working yet (per customer service), but supposedly after the next SW update you'll be able to stream music to the unit from any Bluetooth device.
I'll actually be curious whether wifi ends up having better signal quality. I know some manufacturers are recommending putting a network switch with a linear power supply and a special grounding wire in front of the last Ethernet that goes into any network player. Seems like Wifi will keep all those electrical issues out of the chain.

As I alluded to in the first post of this entire thread, my experience with the ps audio bridge led me to be a firm believer in network based audio. The bridge network input is just so much better than the usb connection.
@cal3713

Thank you very much for the prompt and informative response, helps a lot!

@cal3713

Really looking forward to your comparison against the 300b franks. I own a pair too, and am wanting to replace it with the 3400.
@essrand I'm very curious too.  Although to be fair, I already know that the Franks don't provide enough gas for the coincident pres. I will most definitely, however, try a bi-amp configuration with the Franks driving the head units and the Lyngdorf on the subs. Don't think anyone here is bi-amping though (and almarg didn't think it was a great idea with the pres), so we'll see... I guess funds wise, it'd be best if the 3400 just wins outright. I did need a preamp and had been shopping for a new dac, so I might keep the 3400 even if I end up preferring the Franks.
I've had the 3400 since early May.  Did not have the 2700, so I can't compare the two.

System was: Bryston BDP-2 -> Schiit Yggdrasil -> Ayre KX5-Twenty -> Benchmark AHB2 -> Vivid V1.5

Now the Ayre is a very well regarded pre, and it alone costs considerably more than the 3400, so I knew I was taking a chance when I traded it in toward the Lyngdorf.  I liked the Ayre a lot except for the loud mechanical volume control which I never got used to.  Listening mostly on shuffle, I change volume between almost every song.

Did room measurements after receiving the 3400, and again after break-in (about 300 hours).  As with most things in life, there was a trade-off.  Bass definitely improved with the Lyngdorf.  I feel like a little bit of air and dimensionality was given up though, compared to the Ayre + other components.

Tried outputting the 3400 analog signal to the Benchmark; tried digital out from the 3400 to the Schiit and back to the analog input of the 3400;  and digital out -> Schiit -> Benchmark (using the 3400 as just pre & room correction).  In my system, the Benchmark seemed to give little or no change over the 3400's amp.  The Schiit was harder to tell.  I think I would need to get the improved analog input module for the 3400 and test again. (the Yggdrasil really is an extraordinary DAC)

I'm using neutral voicing on the Lyngdorf... the voicing customization options (filter settings) are a bit confusing to me and I haven't really explored that, although it could end up making things even better.  Has anyone here has success with customizing voicing?
Sorry guy s off topic but I want to see if someone can help. Tried to do software update for the first time on the 2170.
Put software on fat format thumb drive
turned of unit
inserted into sw update slot on back
turn on power amp while holding down the standby button.
update never happened and I tried several times.
to make things worse after 3 attempts the unit would not power up at all. No lights nothing. I thought it was bricked. Left it alone for about ten minutes and it came back on. Strange.
Mofojo.

Have heard of a couple of people having issues on an update, do not remember what one of their solutions was but it should be right here in this thread somewhere.
I only updated mine once right out of the box and had no problem at all.
Good luck.
