Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1

+1 The The. I'd no idea Matt Johnson was still at it. Mind Bomb gave me tinnitus back in the day.

@noromance he did hang it up and then decided to get back on the road. His father died while he was on tour. Sad but he is back.

+1  @noromance   Nice to see Santana's "other" recordings being played.

+1  @mammothguy54   Have a VG+ "Business As Usual" believe its an OP.  Memory says it has near Audiophile SQ will play on Friday.

@dayglow

That's what I remember, too.  But it sure sounded poor today.  It was the first album I played, and there is a warm-up time for the tubes to sound better.  But this was worse than that.  Maybe something on the stylus?  I always clean the stylus after every 2 or 3 albums sides.  I'll run it through the Degritter again, be sure to have a clean stylus, and try once more.  Please let me know your opinion after playing your copy.  It's a great album and I'm hoping for the best. I appreciate it very much.  Thanks.

@bkeske @noromance   I noted your exchange about 12AU7 and 5814 dual triodes a few pages back.  Just curious Brian, what brand 5814 did you use?

Hey Daniel, I purchased a couple old CBS-Hytron 5814A’s. I believe they are from the late 50’s with red lettering. I believe the earlier of these tubes had white lettering, then blue in the 60’s (which are said not to be as desirable).

@bkeske Hi Brian, I’ve not tried the CBS Hytrons.  I have tried very late production   (1987) Philips branded 5814As (made at the Sylvania plant) for the military (marked JAN).  Pretty decent actually when compared with GEs from the early 60s and RCAs from the same era.

 I use them in an amplifier driving the 300B output power triode.  Actually I’m using a mid-60s era RCA 12BH7A which yields a much larger soundscape (30% longer cathode/grid/plate) with nice vocals.  If the filament supply has the capacity for the additional load of the 12BH7 (300ma vs. 150ma for 12AU7), it’s an interesting test.

Standout album, beautifully done.

Re: Business as Usual,

A couple years ago I rediscovered this and was spinning it a couple times each weekend. SQ is excellent. By comparison, Cargo sounds muted and involving.

@puffball08 @bkeske

Agreed. 12BH7A (CV5042) can be great. Curious if the Trumpet could facilitate it.

I had an amp that called for 12AU7/ECC82 and I swapped in a long black plate Brimar CV5042. It draws more heater current but man, it had such a "black" background and air, I was blown away.

Doesn't this rely on the power supply? As I am running the SBooster LPS, it is capable of 2.5A @15v, the stock Hagerman w/wall wart was designed for 2.05A @15v. So, as designed, the SBooster (in theory) has more current available than the Trumpet was designed for, which is good. But, may not be enough for 12HBH7A's if they call for 3A.

I might have this all wrong, just learning here. From what I am reading, it is the power supply that could be damaged by not being able to provide enough current, (in my case), not the Trumpet itself.

Brian, on the Trumpet, it all depends on the internal capacity of the DC regulator feeding the tubes on the board.

Gotcha. I think I was wrong anyway. 300ma is .3A, not 3A. So, not a huge difference really. I would have to check with Jim. Jim includes the schematics in the manual, but it is beyond my knowledge to know if the capacity is adequate

Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan  -  In Session   AP/QRP 45rpm.  This is just what the title suggests, a live (studio) recording with Albert having Stevie sitting in when Stevie was a young up & coming star.  Very cool session, no doubt.

The Moody Blues – Seventh Sojourn (Threshold 1972)

Forgot how good this is. Have not played it in 30 years.

It was such a nice day here today that I spent a couple hours inside my LRS😁

This is a 4 record box set I purchased today. Interesting music for sure

Malcolm Williamson, Lennox Berkeley, Yehudi Menuhin, The London Philharmonic Orchestra, Menuhin Festival Orchestra, Sir Adrian Boult – Violin Concertos (His Master's Voice 1972)

Very happy to receive a box from Acoustic Sounds today. All three of these sound wonderful, but the Bluesey Burrell is perhaps the best sonically based on my first listen (except for the the kind of annoying tape hiss).

Wore out my 1975 original, thankfully the re-issue is a step up in SQ and quiet vinyl. Acadian Driftwood, ahhhh…
