Brian Eno - Before And After Science. Island 1977 |
Wilco - (the album)
Frustratingly bad sounding right out of the sleeve. Brand new perfect condition vinyl that sounds thin, harsh, and sibilant. Definitely worse than the CD. No life or "musicality", Maybe a good scrubbing will help? WTF! And Wilco generally has excellent recordings IMO. |

@boxer12 awesome album. An all time fav of mine! |
Blue Oyster Cult - "On Your Feet Or on Your Knees" - Live
Side 3 "Then Came the Last Days of May" - My favorite BOC Song "Cities on Flame" "ME 262" |
Lot of love for Natalie Merchant. I saw her during the In My Tribe tour. We sat up front and after I went up and said hi and got a big smile. 😍 |

@pkatsuleas, I agree Wilco "The Album" is far from their best pressing. A Ghost is Born is one awesome LP where they put extra effort into the vinyl version. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and Sky Blue Sky, while more typical polished rock productions also are worth investing in the vinyl.
For the rarer gems: The Autumn Defense - Circles is must have on vinyl for any Wilco fan. John & Pat's masterpiece with glorious harmonies, lyrics and tone reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel, Crosby/Nash and Fairport Convention. Nels Cline & Julian Lage - Rooms, acoustic guitar duo of avangarde jazz that will reward your attention with complex tunes masterfully played with extreme clarity. |
@noromance Jerome is an audiophile. His first one was a kickstarter-driven album that promised AAA production and delivered great sonics. |
+1 boxer12 David & David. "Boomtown" easily makes my Top 10 Alternative Rock recordings of the 1980's! If not for Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel it would be a strong contender for album of the year for 1986. |
@sbank
I have The Autumn Defense "Once Around" , really enjoy it. |
Elvis Costello - The Delivery Man |
@spiritofradio
I know what you mean James. |
Peter Green "In The Skies" 1979/Sail Records/promo
again....... |
Neil Young "Carnegie Hall" lp 2 |
Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 3 Kubelik Choir and Symphonie-Orchester Des Bayerischen Rundfunks
Repeat from last night listen. Have to admit I was too worn out and sleepy to appreciate it so revisiting this morning. Do yourselves a favor sometime and set aside an hour and a half for an attentive listen to this. Listening through to when the final (adagio) movement transports can be one of life’s blessings and rewards. |

- Tell us about Peter Green "In The Skies"
- How's the sound quality on Star Crossed? I thought my clear pressing of Golden Hour is one of the better recent major label production jobs (and an amazing album!)

Great post here. Will check these out. Are these records related to Wilco? |
@sbank
In The Skies......the SQ is great. Lots air.
Star Crossed is every bit as good as Golden Hour. |
James, One or two members of Wilco are in The Autumn Defense. Nels Cline being one |
Streaming “In The Skies”. Very Groovy. |

Ah, thanks Steve. But not Tweedy? Will check it out. |

@slaw Thanks! I'm on it!
@spiritofradio Pat Sansone and John Stirrat are both in Wilco. The Autumn Defense is their side band, which also includes a fantastic drummer, "G-Wiz" Greg Wieczorek, who's also been in Norah Jones' touring band. Pat & John are both fantastic singers, providing most of the harmony vocals on Wilco albums. John sings lead on one song from A.M. "It's Just That Simple", a live Wilco show standby. I wish they'd both get lead vocal opportunities with Wilco on a regular basis, but that ain't happening, as Tweedy runs the show. Nothing against Jeff, I enjoy his solo LPs and loved seeing him tour solo, but Pat and John have wonderful pure sweet voices and they deserve more exposure. Nels is not only Wilco's lead guitarist, but has done much both solo and in collaborations. He covers many genres from straight jazz, to vintage showtunes and does shows filled with genius improvisations. Great youtube vids of him detailing guitar rigs, creative process, etc. It's a rabbithole ;-) |

Thank you much for the reply. I enjoy the dialogue and direction. Turns out I’d downloaded Room a few years ago, played it and forgot. Thanks for the reminder. Have it on now. It’s great really. I’ve been familiar with some of Nels work for awhile. Out of, what, 1,000 recordings, I do have a couple of his records and records he’s contributed to. Nels Cline Singers is one version of his music that I particularly enjoy. But I either forgot or possible didn’t ever know he played for Wilco. I am not a fan and tend to avoid that band. I tried (even bought the beautiful Whole Love LP package) but the music to me was never interesting enough to overcome all the bad feeling. No explaining my strange taste I guess.

@sbank
do you recommend the remastered 2017 Circles or the OP? |

Did a deep clean. First play had small/light ticks.......
So far, much less surface noise, SQ actually improved as well. More open, better tone.....sustain on piano and acoustic guitar improved........ |
The David Bromberg Band – Reckless Abandon (Fantasy 1977)
Much more Dixieland and bluegrass than his earlier albums. This is a fine recording and great music. Minty condition. |
