+1 for:
The sweet spot... MyMats is two.

FWIW:
I have a lot of experience with dampening materials. I've used both the Michael Percy & Parts Connexion variety (as well as sorbothane but I don't recommend that). Both Percy's & Part Connexion dampening sheets are effective. The stereo rack I had prior to my current one was .5" plate steel (not ideal BTW) & had those sheets on both sides. It worked well. I've also dampened many a chassis with the parts connexion sheets. They both do what they are designed to do.
Yup @slaw, saw the review (I’m on Bill’s blog mailing list. Though our musical tastes are very different, I like his writing a lot). If I was lookin’ for a mat I’d sure give yours a shot (still may, actually). I’m pretty darn happy with the Delrin top layers on both my Townshend Audio Rock Elite (the Delrin bonded to the cast-Plaster-Of-Paris platter) and VPI TNT-4 (Delrin on top of lead-lined Aluminum) and -5 (Delrin on solid Stainless Steel) platters. I would definitely use a mat on the VPI Classic, with it’s aluminum platter. I like the Delrin/LP vinyl interface, the best in my experience.

I know you don’t approve of clamps Steve, but I like those too (been using 'em for three decades now). The Rock came with a reflex clamp (pretty fragile, don’t over-tighten!), as did of course the TNT. I know there is a rationale for using a damping layer between LP and even Delrin, and for no clamp (your hypothesis of the bearing noise being transmitted though the clamp into the LP). If I make it up to Jims place in upstate Washington, checking it out on his SOTA will be at the top of my list.
Tom, I was not familiar with Budgie until recently.  I have a feeling the "B" section of my record collection will be expanding.
Recently acquired a stellar collection of first pressing rock LPs that had been left untouched in storage since at least 1972 and never touched since. Every one looked as though they had been pressed, played a couple times and put away. No fading, spots, nothing. Bright, beautiful covers, glossy vinyl. Like straight out of a time capsule. After some cleaning with my Degritter, I spent the weekend spinning:
-Jimi Hendrix Experience- Are You Experienced?
-Jimi Hendrix Experience- Axis, Bold As Love
-The Pretty Things- Self Titled 1st LP
-Pink Floyd- Saucerful of Secrets
-Ten Years After- SHHH
-Savoy Brown Blues Band- Shake Down- Decca UK ffss
-ZZ Top- First Album
-T Rex- Electric Warrior
Have another 8 or 9 to go through. Fantastic listening experience.

Playlist was from last night 4/18. I started posting 2x per week on 4/14/20, My first update after 7 months had 332 albums sides played with 3 repeats. As of 4/18 613 albums sides have been played, I will omit the 7 intentional repeats from 4/11 giving me a true total of 606. There probably are several repeats over the last 5 months, I will post that info on 4/25. Over the past year have acquired about 100 new recordings and tossing well over 50 giving me a total around 1350 albums. After 1 year not even at the half way mark and just realizing how few audiophile recordings 4.5/5 I own.
@big_greg

Greg, if you're looking for a place to start you dive into the Budgie catalog, my favorites are "Squawk" and "Bandolier". All of the early stuff is good. I haven't heard any of their stuff newer that 1977's "Impeckable" so I don't know how they aged as a band. Happy Budgie hunting....
How exciting jhowlin! Excellent find!

Adrian Belew / Twang bar king
Wow is this well recorded!
Gold Lions installed, and have been warming up all afternoon. Picked something I am not only familiar with, but has an abundance of midrange acoustic tone, along with a couple full range songs...will run without dampers.....right now.....

Neil Young - After the Gold Rush. Reprise reissue 1978, originally 1970.
Second spin....

Luna - Bewitched. Gotta Groove Records reissue/repress 2021. Originally Elektra 1994 (CD only)
Lyle Mays
Fictionary (Digital)

this is ripe for a vinyl mastering....somebody please!
Putting a recently acquired Degritter to work.....
Caroliner (this version of the band known as Snake Tailed Waxwalker) "Smoke Tour For Lunation"
(for adventurous listeners, a good Caroliner starting point is "Rise of the Common Woodpile")
Windy & Carl "Allegiance And Conviction"
Tuba Skinny "Blue Crime Stomp"
:zoviet*france: "Further Collusion"
Devo "Hardcore Vol. 2"
Destroy All Monsters "S/T" (the Ron Asheton, Niagra era-1982~1984)

@tomic601: Let me know when is good for you Jim, and I'll be up! My sister has a friend in Seattle she's been wanting to visit, so I'll have time to do whatever I want (include look for LP's, of course). I know Light In The Attic Records (record company, not a retailer) is up north somewhere, but they seem to have put the business on pause for the past year. I have about a half-dozen of their LP's on my search for list, and I can't find them anywhere!---Eric.
@big_greg +1 on the R.L. Burnside. There used to be a member on here who would post about Burnside and other good Blues Players until about 2 1/2 years ago. I learned a lot from him and laughed a lot at his light hearted postings. He used to make those music pilgrimages down to the delta and had some great reports about them. Can’t remember his handle. Wish I could.
Anyway, the only time I thought my turntable would explode my system was the time I had an RL Burnside record on pretty loud. That Alligator bit so hard the floorboards were waving up and down.
