Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1

The Great Culling - Part Deux continues.....

The Roches - S/T

Into the sell/trade pile it goes. Not sure why I bought this one in the first place, although the song - "Hammond" is pretty catchy. Also don't quite understand why Fripp and Levin were associated with this record. Personal relationships possibly?

Just arrived,

Eva Cassidy "Live @ Blues Alley"

25th Anniversary/dbl lp/45rpm

Miles Davis "Kind of Blue"

UHQR/AP

Neil Young & Crazy Horse "Barn"

Nils Lofgren - Acoustic Live

Recommendation from @reubent - thanks!

I streamed > I liked > I purchased

New arrivals just run through the Spin Clean:

Kansas - Monolith OP

Keith Jarrett- Paris Concert ECM (Germany)

ECM Presents (Sampler) 1984 Metheny, Jarrett, Abercrombie & DeJohnette

Cat Stevens- Teaser and the Firecat 1995 MFSL Original Master Recording

Nels Cline & Eric von Essen - Elegies

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms.  Haven't listened to this in a while, such a great album.  Need to thin the herd, I have 4 copies.  I'll keep the MFSL and Quiex II promo copy for sure, the other two are probably on their way to the castaway bin.

Picked up several albums this past weekend - here's the one I'm listening to now:

Mannheim Steamroller - Fresh Aire II

I use a few drops of Triton X100 in the US tank. Always rinse in the SpinClean.

It's either the dog or the records that fall into first place🤣

Steve, my copy is fairly quiet with just a little surface noise between songs.  That's not an issue at all.  However, the overall SQ seems to have a veil over it, a bit "muffled" so to speak.  Not nearly as clear or open as many other records.  It's good, but certainly not really good.

Back from Sin City and happy to see my dog, girlfriend, and a pile of records that were delivered while I was gone (not necessarily in that order). April Wine - The Nature of the Beast

Steve - My copy has some noise on side 2

Bill - thanks for the Audio Desk surfactant tip. More options is good. The relatively small Degritter tank will i believe lead to easy experiments…..

Arrival and playing soon;

Aiofe O’Donovan - Age of Apathy

I have been streaming some Fats Kaplin warming up the amp…..

Joel,

Is your copy of Raise the Roof noisy at all? Mine is between tracks

Traffic - John Barleycorn Must Die  A very good PP copy.

Supertramp - Brother Where You Bound  Also, a very good PP copy which I bought as soon as it was released.

Robert Plant / Alison Krauss - Raise The Roof

Michael Franks - Tiger In The Rain   Direct-Disc Labs did a superb job on this album.

The Wonderful Sounds of Female Vocals / 4 sides
2018 Analogue Productions

I use the surfactant Audio Desk recommends. It’s more expensive than a pint of Tergitol but a vial is added to a gallon of distilled H2O and will clean 100-200 records. My AD tank holds a smidge over a gallon.
The surfactant is biodegradable, anti-static, alcohol free, odorless and doesn’t “suds up” or leave a residue. I’m only mentioning so you know an alternative. Happiness is a clean and quiet LP spinning on the phonograph, any way you get there.

@slaw

Wanting to put more cleaner than I needed.

Steve, I went through the same thing initially.  However, I was overlooking the fundamental purpose of the Tergitol.  It’s not the Tergitol doing the cleaning, it’s the microscopic imploding bubbles that do the cleaning.  The surfactant, in this case Tergitol, is there to reduce the surface tension of the “water-air” interface on the surface of the record.  Reducing the surface tension allows the bubbles more and better access into the grooves of the record, the whole object of the exercise.

The trick has been to find just the right amount of surfactant to get a good cleaning but not generate suds or leave too much residue behind after drying.

Definitely a work in progress.

The Great Culling - Part Deux continues. Building up a pile/crate to take for sale/trade to a couple of LRS.

Joni Mitchell - "Court and Spark"

Asylum EQ-1001 - QUAD!

Love the record, but this copy isn’t doing it for me. THink I’ll dump it and look for a better copy.

I've had my Degritter since last March.  I have been doing research for a while now on Tergitol, the proper mixture, application, pre-cleaning methods, etc.  I also have a Nitty Gritty so for used records that too lends a helping hand in a multi-step process.  I'll reach out for further information, as needed, etc.

What an awesome group of people here on this thread.  I learn so much.  I also hope to be able to contribute some, too.

That was one of my issues in the beginning. Wanting to put more cleaner than I needed. I had very good results with just distilled water.

@mammothguy54  I’ve been doing the 2 tank cleaning method with the Degritter since I purchased the gadget last April.  Takes twice the time but worth it in the end.
I do groups of records, like 8~16 at a time.  After the Tergitol bath, I use a bamboo dish rack to store the records upright between bathes.  After finishing the group, I switch the tank to distilled water and run the records through again for a rinse.

Regarding Tergitol, I’ve found that using more than 0.7ml of the concentrate in the Degritter tank (1.4l) leads to suds coming out of the slot-not a good thing.

My plan is to do an initial Enzyme step with my wet vac Nitty Gritty then the  Next 2 steps same as Daniel. The excellent sonic test of sending 16 discs to Perfect Vinyl Forever pushed me into pulling trigger on US cleaning…. And of course a lot of +++ influence from Steve along the way..best thread on AG

Jim

@puffball08 aka Daniel in Orange county has been cutting trail w Degritter process. He has evolved a three step method w spinclean step, then a Turgitol cycle in degritter followed by a water only cycle. He has also been in direct contact w Degritter on duty cycle and taking some readings of temps as machine operates in various above cycles across a 8 or so record batch. Supercool.

Jim

Jim, you have my attention on this.  It sounds as though you have a Degritter on backorder?  And with an extra tank?  It sounds as though you will clean with a Tergitol solution/mixture and then follow up with pure distilled water rinse via the second tank.  Am I correct?  This process has me very interested.  I have a Degritter and have been considering a second tank for that very process.

Tell me more, please.  Thanks.

Steve - Let me know what you think of Colvin / Earle  - I have that on ripped CD into  server only..but i could be influenced into LP…

Daniel - Water is next ! spoke to dealer again yesterday to attempt confirmation back to Degritter tgat extra tank would be included in the estimated 1/25 shipment…We shall see…hopeful….

@tomic601  Jim, did you find/order an extra tank?  Are you stocked up on distilled water?  Walmart (gulp) had the best price at 89 cents/gallon for a while.  But with the recent supply chain problems, the price jumped to $1.19/gallon last week (+10 cent bottle deposit).  daniel
