Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1

Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking. A&M reissue 1973, originally 1969.

That’s a wide range there Brian, interesting.

My system has always been minimalist in the fact of vinyl only, so never had a line stage. Have always been interested in passive. I am still wanting to hear one of the Hattor units.

Joan Shelley "The Spur"

2022/No Quarter

my copy is dished. didn't realize the great Bill Callahan was on this record.

save for my wish of more expansive SS.

LOL @slaw

I just checked out 470 vs 1K on the Trumpet again to check. The ‘new’ 12au7 CBS Hytron’s I installed bring some more sparkle by themselves vs the Brimar’s I had in. The Hytron’s makes the 470 setting better than before…..but still prefer 1K.

Really, loading is all seasoning to personal taste. There is really no objective right or wrong.

On well recorded albums, SQ is darn good save for my wish of more expansive SS.

Maybe the Audia Flight is showing faults in recordings more than the Trio?

@slaw

Steve, I corrected my post. Peter recommends 470 min or more for the MIMC and also the Sussarro. Both have the same output at .4.

1K gave me that ‘sparkle’ vs 470.

Hey Brian,

I had 5 preset options on my Trio. I found 390 sounded best. The other closest options are 300( too thin) or 510 (too muddy). Right now I’m running 400. I’m very close but not perfect. I’m hard on myself 😞

The Sussurro specs read 450 ohm.

@slaw

Steve, I find with my SS MIMC lo, 1K loading sounds best, to me. Peter recommends 470 min, and 1K Seems to sound best to me. If I had the option of, let’s say, 800 (which I do not), I would say that may be perfect.

Been spinning some of my CD’s….gasp 😁……But, need a vinyl fix…

Joni Mitchell - Hissing of Summer Lawns. Asylum 1975

James,

You asked about my phono stage.....

It’s an interesting piece. I am surprised at how on the warm side of neutral it is. It sounds great but I need to satisfy my curiosity with cartridge loading before I make any profound statements about it’s SQ. Right now, compared to my Trio, which is tubed, the Audia Flight has greater extension in the bass. Midrange is full. I wish there was a little, just a little more sparkle ( as Brian says) on top. My thinking is a different loading resistor will be in order. I think the SS could have more bloom.

The music sure does have a beauty to it now. Fremer gave it a glowing review 10 years ago, FWIW.

BTW, loved that Osibisa lp jacket!

Hey Spencer,

Mastering engineer is Josh Bonati. I don't know of him. Joan is Kentucky born and it looks like the entire album was done at several locations there.

I'm getting a late start today.

@slaw looking forward to your thoughts on SQ of The Spur. I love the music when streamed. Know anything about the mastering etc?

Just arrived,

The Smile "A Light For Attracting Attention"

I love this considering it comes from the guy who turned me on to Balmorhea

@sbank I think maybe I love Balmorhea because I came of age rocking out to music like Foghat, know what I mean?  But last night I had it on loud and the corner speakers let the whole house become the speaker and I was 15 again, sharing my music with the world.

I’m listening to an old Quintessence LP of Earl Wild playing Rachmaninoff’s 4th Piano Concerto with Jasha Horenstein conducting. Fabulous disc in every way.
‘Those old Quintessence recordings, though cheap, were outstanding.

Spencer, I don't want to stick a really dirty record in the US cleaner and have whatever crud was on it in the tank, thus the scrub and rinse on the VPI before US.

@big_greg You do VPI before US? Ever try the opposite? I would think US would loose up stuff deeply embedded, and a post US rinsing is a good idea.

Jerry Garcia - Garcia  This is a beater that came from a friend's deceased ex-wife's collection.  Sadly I had to throw most of them away they were so beat up.  This looks like crap, but plays surprisingly well after a good scrub on the VPI and a spin in the US cleaner.

Foghat - Rock and Roll Outlaws OP

if I’m forced to answer, yes, it’s in my top 5 all time

I love this considering it comes from the guy who turned me on to Balmorhea. Wide taste...a sign of genius!

@tomic601 made me do it! This $3.99 beater sounds surprisingly clean. Dynavector must be steering around the potholes.

Split Enz / Waiata

”One Step Ahead”, uh huh…killer…

James, still cranking Bolin I see…😎

James, the Bad Co is good, not great. Not hyped up or over-produced like some "live" albums. The orange vinyl is really quiet and the performances are good and it's well mixed.
