Nice "introduction"! BTW, thank you again Rushton for your comprehensive list of recommended organ recordings on LP. I've managed to track down a half dozen or so, and they are all very fine indeed.
The local audio group is meeting this afternoon and members asked for "an introduction to classical music." Not wishing to teach music history class, a few of us put our heads together and decided to offer simply a sampler based "classical music we enjoy, perhaps you'll find something here that strikes your fancy..." We'll only be playing snippets, unfortunately. Nothing longer than 8 minutes. Here's the planned playlist, that will surely change based on requests...
I know some of the record afficiandos don't love this set, but to me it's sublime. I have wanted one since buying my first MFSL Beatle album, and I finally bit the bullet, bid up and got one for what I feel was a great price.
I couldn't be happier, the vinyl is in sublime shape.
No, it's not the Japanese mono versions, which I have heard a few of recently, but I still think they are stellar.
P.F. Sloan - "Here's Where I Belong/The Best Of The Dunhill Years 1965-1967" [Big Beat '08] Roland Kirk with Jack McDuff - "Kirk's Work" [Prestige '61/'07]
Shostakovich, The Bolt (RCA by Decca) Respighi, Church Windows (Reference Recordings) Rossini-Respighi, Overture to “La Boutique Fantastique” (RCA by Decca) Herold-Lanchberry, La Fille Mal Gardee Enescu, Violin Sonata No. 3 (Altarus and Wilson Audio) Vivaldi, Seasons (Fone and CRD) Laudate II (Proprius)
S-R-WoTen, I know, I love MFSL stuff and that is a great album. I'm not happy about it, I should have returned it when I first got it, but didn't get around to it then.
Oliver Nelson - "A Dream Deferred" [Flying Dutchman 2LP comp. '76] Modern Jazz Quartet - "Blues On Bach" [Atlantic '74] Bill Evans - "The Interplay Sessions" [Milestone 2LP '82, rec. '62] George Harrison - "Wonderwall Music" [Apple '68]
I loved Inglorious Basterds! Christopher Waltz steals the movie, and I am shocked by how good Diane Kruger is in that movie, she's great, as well as the beautiful French actress who plays the theater owner.
I need to rent that again, my wife didn't want to see it because of the violence, but I know the movie well enough to zip through the parts she will gross out at.
Dig the "Cosmic Wheels" Jaybo, "7-Tease" was another underrated hip later Donovan (though "Essence To Essence" in between was kind of a dog IMO...)
Earl Van Dyke & The Soul Brothers - "That Motown Sound" [Motown '65] The Zombies - S/T [Parrot '65] The Paul Butterfield Blues Band - S/T [Elektra '65] 101 Strings - "Play Million Seller Hits Written By The Beatles" [Alshire '67?] John Barry - "Petulia" O.M.P. Sndtrk. [W7 '68] Gordon Lightfoot - "Back Here On Earth" [UA '68] The Clique - S/T [White Whale '69] Cat Stevens - "Very Young And Early Songs" [Deram/London '72, comp. rec. mid-60's] The Fleshtones - "Speed Connection II/Live In Paris '85" [I.R.S. '85] The Original Sins - "Self Destruct" [Psonik/Skyclad '90]
Donald Byrd - "Royal Flush" [Blue Note '61/'06] Sonny Rollins - "The Sound Of Sonny" [Riverside '57/'07] Paul Desmond featuring Jim Hall -"Bossa Antigua" [RCA '64/'99] Buddie Emmons - "Steel Guitar Jazz" [Mercury '63/'05] Mosaic Select: McCoy Tyner [Mosaic 3CD '07, orig. issued on Blue Note albums "Expansions", "Cosmos", "Extensions" and "Asante" rec. Just got this one, one of my fave albums. The LP could use a cleaning (still waiting on my d*mn VPI 16.5 to arrive) but sounds awesome even if a little gritty. I heart eBay.
Nazareth- Close Enough For Rock And Roll Great sounding and a wide range of music on this LP that I have bought an unknown number of copies from my teen years 'till now. Highly recomended for any 70's rock fan!
Went to the Cincinnati Public Library annual book sale and picked up about 50 single LPs (mostly classical) and about 10 box sets (all classical).
A very kind audiophile that I met there gave me a NM Britten "War Requiem" (London, Britten,Pears,Fischer-Dieskau, Vishnevskaya) from off his stack.
I have been wanting to pick this up for years and just never found one that was in good shape or was affordable. I paid $1.00 for the Britten as well as the other discs. I do have another version by Rattle (digital)that is pretty wonderful. But this one has such a low sound floor and soundstaging that the digital version doesn't portray. Not to mention the dynamic shading and impact.Amazing!
Rushton I know you have this and love it. Now I do too.
Elton John- Yellow Brick Road excellent 180 gram pressing (DJM 1001) with big dynamics J.C. Mellenkamp- Scarecrow Dire Straits- first one Tommy Tutone- Two CCR- Willy and the Poor Boys
