@sml19 -- its a medium sized living room, about 15' wide by about 24' long with vaulted ceilings and partially open on one side to a dining area. I brought the 1000s over from a smaller room in a prior house. Ohm recommended the 3000s for me at the new place, but I ended up adding a subwoofer (GE Supersub X) and have an active crossover that keeps the Ohms from doing low bass, The speakers are about about 2' from the wall behind them and around 3' from the side walls. I did quite a bit of experimenting to find what gave me the best sound. The combo works great for my listening, but I'm not a headbanger -- 80 dB average, give or take, is plenty loud for me, and bass is not an issue with the sub present.
Stand mount speakers to replace Magnepan 1.6’s
I am looking for recommendation for stand mount speakers that I can use to replace my twenty year old 1.6 Magnepans.
Due to a move to a new home, my 1.6’s don’t have the space behind them to allow for their ideal sound to be realized without moving them back and fourth from the wall behind them the four to five feet they require.
Stand mount speakers would allow me to move them forward more easily when listening to my music. I love the Magnepan sound, but realize that stand mount speakers will not duplicate the sound of the 1.6’s and I am willing to accept that fact.. Can anyone recommend stand mount speakers that might work for me. My listening room is large, 20’+ wide by 26’ deep, with 9’ ceilings. I use an older system of a Belles 150 A solid state amp with Sonic Frontier tube pre, DAC and phono separates. I would like to keep the cost new or used to $5,000 or less.
Any recommendation would be appreciated.
If you are still planning to move the speakers back and forth (even a little bit) you might want to re-think stand mounts. Many stand mount speakers do not attach to the stands. so moving them will be awkward, to say the least. And putting ballast into speaker stands makes moving them even harder. Perhaps a floor stander with sliders underneath would be a little easier to move back and forth.

I am very happy with Dynaudio Heritage Specials. A used pair is probably a little over your budget, but really worth a listen if you can. I don’t typically listen at very loud levels and I sit about six or seven feet from the Dynaudios, but my overall space is also large (it’s a loft) and is probably about 18ft wide by 30ft or more with 16ft ceilings. They sound great in my room. |
I know you said stand mount, and I’m a stand mount fan as well, but I think you’re unnecessarily limiting your choices, as the smaller floor standers take up no more living space. I’m thinking of the Totem Hawks or Forests. Both great speaker and very slim. If you insist on stands, the Totem Model 1 is very good as well. |
I used to have a pair of Maggie 1.6QRs and had to sell them after a move to a new house with no suitable room. After a couple of experiments, I've settled on a pair of Ohm 1000s. They give great sound without having to be far out into the room, so I don't have to move them everytime I want to do some serious listening. |
@secretguy and a real value.
