Quboz cuts off beginning of songs

Here's my current setup:

Fiber Ethernet 300m>Innuos Pulse>Bryston BDA3>Preamp

and my previous setup:

Fiber Ethernet>Bluesound Node 2i w LPS>Schiit Bifrost 2/64>preamp

In both configurations, when the resolution changes, the beginning half second or so is either cut off, or there's    a  brief stutter. If I hit "Back" it plays normally. If I go back to the previous song and make it change the resolution, the same happens. It appears to me that Quboz starts the song before the DAC has changed resolution. So, new streamer, new DAC, same issue.

I've been working with Innuos support to determine if there's a solution using their logs as a view into what's happening. That's still ongoing. But I don't see anyone else with this issue posting about it so I thought I would see if anyone else is experiencing this, or whether anyone has thoughts about what I'm experiencing.

Is it possible that both DACs have an issue with not switching quickly enough? But I've also experienced this using a Chromecast to stream Quboz, so that points to Quboz as the issue. But again, nobody has posted about this.

Any ideas?

I've been having this problem too.  I have an Ian Canada streamer and a Chord Qutest, fed by a Mac Mini running Audirvana.  I've tried different playback engines (MPD, Squeezelite etc), Minimserver, and numerous other configurations but the problem persists.  I find it frustrating but haven't found a solution.

@mashif  Sounds like changing streamer settings is helping some. But, I do not believe Qobuz cutting out on you is related to your streamer alone. I do agree with the previous comment that it might be an issue with the new Connect update.  Reason why is, recently, I have been experiencing the same issue with Qobus cutting out, when I am, simply, streaming from my iPhone to my soundbar, as well as my streamer.  Very annoying.

@curthluff

The Rose150B network streamer is not a piece of junk. While it is not at the apex of sound quality for its tier... it is good sounding and appropriate for its level.

i am playing with my Rose150B network streamer; i know, it's a piece of junk and no one likes them, but for now as i build toward my reference system (i will replace the Rose with a Studio Player by WADAX) my simple Rose does not have any problems as noted previously....and the DAC in the Rose somewhat sucks, but does the job ok.

I've found a combination of things that result in an acceptable solution.

Sense has a Delay setting that addresses it most of the time but is not effective with Quboz Connect which I like to use with playlists because it shows on my phone lock screen. Innuos support says that feature will be available in Sense soon so I look forward to that.

But the BDA-3 has an Upsample Mode that converts everything internally and that, combined with the Pulse delay solves the issue. The only minor drawback is this is only available with SPDIF inputs, not USB. That's ok because I have an excellent coax cable with a BNC connector and that's what Bryston recommends.

Back to the music!

DACs I had that didn’t have these issues -

Bricasti M3

Chord Qutest and Hugo TT2

Benchmark DAC3

PS Audio DSD Mark 1

Meitner MA3i

It could be a combination of Innuos and your dac. If the buffer settings make no difference you either need another streamer or another dac to remedy this hiccup.

OP  …“Are there DACs that have another way to deal with this issue.”

Yes, practically all. Berkeley, Linn, Audio Research, dCS…etc.

Try the buffer settings in innuos and see if it resolves it

I used to own BDA-3 and used it with Lumin U1 Mini. Don’t recall it swallowing the first few seconds of a song. But do recall a static like pop

To add to the confusion, today I received a reply from Bryston explaining that the delay is by design to prevent "pops" during a resolution change. This was true of my Schiit Bifrost as well.

Are there DACs that have another way to deal with this issue. I find it disconcerting that Bryston considers normal.

I don’t have InnuOS but here’s what I was able to google

  1. Access the Sense app: Open the Innuos Sense app on your device.
  2. Navigate to settings: Go to System > Settings > Audio.
  3. Locate USB Latency Mode: Find the setting labeled "USB Latency Mode".
  4. Choose your setting: You can choose between "Normal" or "Low".
  5. Experiment: Try both settings to see which one you prefer for your setup and listening preferences.

Considerations:

  • "Normal" mode: is generally recommended as it is a safer buffer for DACs.
  • "Low" mode: can potentially offer audible improvements in sound quality but may not be compatible with all DACs, according to Innuos Community
  • If you encounter issues with your DAC after switching to "Low" mode, revert to "Normal".

I have the same issue, but I use Tidal.  My Innuos Pulse Mini will "drop" the first couple of notes of a song.  For example, the beginning of "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac will not play the first couple of beats from the drum and bass intro.  I'm thinking it's an Innuos issue, and not a Qobus or Tidal problem.

Overall, I've never experienced this with Qobuz over the past 5 years.

However, I've been using an Aurender server and it has an adjustment for the number of seconds between songs.  Try stretching out this time if your device is adjustable.

I've been using Qobuz on a Roon Nucleus+ server for several years now, USB into a PS Audio DirectStream Mk2 DAC and have never experienced that.

I'm pretty sure I used to have this issue with a Schiit DAC... and it was it being slow to respond to the signal to change resolutions... there was also a loud click.

@gkelly

The same thing happens with my Node 2i. I'm thinking it's a Quboz issue. Like they don't send the change resolution signal before the music plays.

I checked the three Qobuz applications which I use. Only the Windows stand-alone application has the facility to control buffer size. It's in the Settings > Music playing menu. Thus, I don't think I can provide you any useful assistance, good luck!

I believe what you’re experiencing I too am. I thought I noticed it when they started using qobuz connect. I figured if I’m experiencing it, someone else is and they will complain to the engineers and it will get fixed in a future update. If it continues for too long then I guess it’ll be up to me to be the someone to complain to the engineers, but either way, I figure it’ll get fixed in the future. The people at InnuOs are good at this stuff and fixing things.

I had this problem with my Sony 5400 CD player. In my case, it turned out to be a known problem (was documented in the manual) with the HDMI interface protocol. Would always cut of the first half-second of music when using HDMI output. Can't say if the glitch has been resolved.

You might try experimenting with an increase in the buffer size in your Qobuz app settings. You should know right away if this works in your system.
