A life sentence!!! My 47 year old JBL 4311 speakers. I've auditioned 5 other candidates with no luck. I'm currently listening to a pair of ATC SCM20 Passives. It's only the second day but so far, I'm not that impressed. When my dealer set them up yesterday, he brie...
I'm curious. What is your "normal" listening volume? Casual listening 65-70, serious listening 75-85 depending on music. Some music demands 85 to be realistic.
new Parasound A21+ vs my old Rotel RB-1080 @milpai I posted that. It was from an email I received from Parasound as a customer. I have a Parasound A23+ and like it very much. I recently upgraded to the Bryston but I still have the Parasound and plan to use it in another system. It was ju...
Maybe critical listening skills are bad? I start with "do I like it better than something else"? If I do, I can analyze why but I won't even bother analyzing if I don't feel drawn in by the sound. Over time I've learned what nuances I like, so if I read reviews I look for those specifi...

A question about tube rolling I'm new to tube rolling as well. I bought an LTA MZ2 preamp about a year ago. It was used and came with a pair of 12SN7s of unknown history. Shortly afterwards, I bought a pair of Sylvania VT231s and it was a very different sound but not what I wa...
$3500 floor standing speakers used. What would be your choice ? I'm currently considering a pair of ATC SCM40 passive models. I've seen them used for $3500-4500. They seem to be universally acclaimed and reasonable in price. I'll be doing some listening in the next week or two.
Treating the ceiling and floor, who else has had great results? I have 3 24x48x6 bass traps on the ceiling above my listening position. I also plan to hang 2 diffusion panels above my speakers.
Do you listen to your music with your eyes open or closed or a combination of both? Mostly closed with dim lights. I like to be in the acoustic space the music offers and looking at my room distracts from that. But every few minutes I'll open them to make sure the boogie man didn't sneak in.
"The room can totally wreck, or make, a system" @hilde45 I totally agree about a good sounding room. That's what good mixing rooms are. Studio recordings may or may not feature the acoustic space of the original recording. But the artist/producer/engineer work hard to create the space they ...
"The room can totally wreck, or make, a system" @hilde45 I understand that in the real world people are used to listening to their rather live rooms and it might sound strange in a treated room. But once your brain tunes into the sound emanating from the speakers you start hearing the room th...
"The room can totally wreck, or make, a system" My background is in recording studios and I couldn't imagine trying to put a system together without first doing basic room treatment. Between standing waves and reverb time, I would find it impossible to evaluate gear. It's a somewhat trial and e...
LOOKING TO IMPROVE THE ACOUSTICS OF MY LISTENING ROOM Given your location, you might look for a Pro Studio designer who can create a specific plan for your room. GIK is a good online resource and has quality products but every room is unique and an experienced designer can take your budget and custom...
The best opening act you've ever seen & heard? NYC, 1967 RKO Theater I saw The Who open for Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. Poor Mitch. After the drum kit fire, it was hard to impress. |
