Personal amp evolution

Seeing the over night success of the speaker evolution thread, it may be interesting to see what type of amp(s) we have all run. Same deal as the other thread-we will sort of create a puzzle of our systems you'll have to visit multiple threads to put everything together!!! ;)
For me I started:
Adcom GFA-565 monoblocks
Rotel RB-990bx
Jeff Rowland Design Group Model 5
Balanced Audio Technology(BAT) VK-60

either a CAT JL2, BAT VK-75se or Tenor 75Wp on the horizon.
tireguy
Fisher S-100 (?)
Sherwood receiver (early SS aaaargh)
Crown d-150
Gas Son of Ampzilla
QUAD 405
Bryston 2B
Adcom 5400
Bedini 25
Llano s-100
Accuphase ?
Pass Aleph V
Wolcott 220M latest production
thus my first and last (hopefully) amp will be tubes
Way back machine takes me to a pair of Phase Linear 400's driving 4 EPI mini-towers. Next stop was a pair of ESS transmission lines with RTR electrosatic tweeters bi-amped with ARC amps. Then onto Magnaplanar tympani 3a with the same ARC amps. Next was a combo with Arc D79 and SP10 pre. Then CJ power amps and pre, with 2 APT HOLMAN amps Dahlquist x-over driving custom subs with 3 10woofers in ea. Essence amp driving Essence 30 spkrs with same sub set up. Essence again driving Dunlavy SCIV's with Krell KSA150 on same sub set up. Harmonic Precision 75 watt driving Dunlavy scIV's and 2 Paradigm Servo 15's. And finally Harmonic Precision mono blocs are now my amps of choice...Tom
Oh I forgot this one and Tireguy, you are too young to remember so don't laugh, Mom and Dad's Zenith Console "The quality goes in before the name goes on" bought from our next door neighbor who was a distribution salesman for Zenith.

It was a good, more than good it was wonderful, to me. My sister still has the solid maple cabinet that housed this sonic wonder of its day. Purchased in 1960.
Its a nice stroll through memory lane with this stuff; well unless of course the amps sucked then it would be unpleasant:) Nice to see such diversity amongst us, keep 'em coming!!

Went from Yamaha to Nakamichi to Rotel to B&K to Krell to Ayre and, finally, I have arrived with the David Berning ZH-270.

Lafayette Receiver (1967-1970)
Scott integrated (1970-1976)
Pioneer sx-838 (1976-1985)
Yamaha R-9 (1985-1986)This is the point that I just wasn't satisfied. What a 2 dimensional sound this receiver had. The worst piece of the bunch.
Threshold S-200 (1986-1988)
Dynaco ST70 (1988-1990)
McIntosh MC-60's (1990-1997) still own
ARC D-115 Mk2 (1997-2001)
Transcendent T-8 LN (2001-Present)
Berning ZH-270 (2002-Present)

Hey Trelja, how about another "classic" receiver? any chance of you offering some of those receivers for sale here on Audiogon? or are you just teasing us?
My profound disagreement with evo845. I moved from tubes to the Pass Labs X150 and couldn't be happier. Gone is the caramel gluon that valves bring. The sound is sweet, quick, and accurate. It has brought my Apogee Duetta Signatures to their full promise. It doesn't even resemble other solid states I have tried, including Acurus, Aragon, Bryston, B&K, Bel, and Krell. Before the Pass X, I was a stalwart tube soldier. I don't argue, though, with a less revealing speaker, valves triumph.
Let's see.....Hummmmm...this one is a bit more difficult then the speaker one, but let's go....

Sansusi 800

Will tubes be next? Seems like Jayarr made a good observation.

I may try biamping with the Llano and the Belles.

Like many of the above posts, I started with midfi- Sansui 6 receiver. I evolved into hifi with the Hafler 220 and never looked back. I upgraded to a pair of OCM 100's(used as balanced differential monoblocks). It seems I have followed a trend in changing from solid state to tube amps--Berning 811 Ziegfried. Not to start another thread, but has anyone else noticed this trend? Just curious as to why or what made people change from SS to tubes.
Unlike many of you, I started very near the top! (please laugh, its' a joke)

1980 Laffayette receiver, thought it sounded awesome at the time.
1982 NAD 7060
1984 Harmon Kardon Citation 11 or 12 (can't remember)
1985 Carver M-400, big mistake, 201 Watts, what a joke!
1986 Carver M-400, added a second to run mono's at 500 Watts, one was not enough power, what a surprise. Minimal improvent. OK, I'm a slow learner.
1988 G.A.S Son of Ampzilla, 80 Watts, infinately more power than the 2 Carver's and WAY better sound.
1989 G.A.S Ampzilla, 250 Watts, used to run subs, left the Son on top. this setup worked well on the Snell A2i's
1991 Elektron Kinetics Eagle, 125 Watts to run Bevridge Sys 3's
1991 Adcom 555 to run the single sub w/ Bev's
2001 Odyssey Stratus, 150 Watts, nice improvement.
2002 Decware Zen Select, I've been bitten by the notorious "Tube Bug"! Ya owe it to yourself to hear one!
2002 Decware Integrated, loved the Zen but, needed a bit more power with my not too efficient speakers.

SAE, Bryston 2B, None (Meridian powered loudspeakers), Spectral, Radford STA15, Meridian, Cary SLA70, ARC Classic 30 (x2), Krell KSA100 (oops, wrong direction there!), ARC Classic 150s. I've recently had some rather simple mods performed on the 150s (20amp IEC connectors and Cardas Gold Ref cords, Cardas copper binding posts, and Hovland inter-stage coupling caps). I've auditioned a couple of the latest "hot" amps and on balance still prefer the ARCs.

This isnt exactly in order and there was a few more that I forgot like levinson 23.5,conrad mf2300,and I am sure there are a few that I am forgetting.
When I started this thread, I thought that it would be easy to remeber, as well as shorter than the thread on the speakers. I was wrong and I even I suffered a lapse of memory for the last years of college, graduate school and the first few years of working. I start with that famous Laffayette receiver at age 16. Who else grew up in New Jersey and remembers Laffayette? Sansui receiver to Sansui integrated, about 1974 vintage. Dynaco PAM and then PAS with Stereo 70. Fisher SA1000 power amp and CA?1000 or 100 preamp. Got these used for about $500 for both and wish I still had them. Up till then, everything was new. SAE amp and preamp with built in equalizer, new. Advent 300 receiver as a preamp/tuner with SAE amp and then a new amp in the early 80's that I cannot remember. Early 80's was a blur. Sometime around 1986 I got a NAD integrated as a preamp -- still cannot remember what power amp I was using. AH! The late 80's and early 90's. PS Audio preamp and Belles 50 watt power amp, both new. Superphon Dual Mono preamp and a modified Stereo 70, new and used. Modified Dynaco PAM done over in dual mono configuration and Belles 100 watt amp, used and new. Assortment of Electrocompaniet products, AW 65, 100 and EC 1 and then I went to a pair of bridged Electrocompaniet AW 100's. All the Electro stuff was free as I was helping them get into the US. Then a Threshold FET 10 preamp with separate phone preamp, and power supply with the Electro's. One of the first Electro integrateds and the British Fidelity (now Musical Fidelity) A1 integrated. Great little amp! Settled in for the next 12+ years with a pair of Bedini 25/25 first with the Threshold line stage then a Superphon SP 100 buffered line stage that Stan Warren updated. Today, still have that SP 100 (which is going back to Stan one last time this summer) and a CJ MV 60.

* Denotes Items I still own.

Note: Yes, I do realize that I bought and sold identicle items a couple of times. As prices dropped, items became better values and I re-purchased an identicle item only to find out why I sold it in the first place!!!

The B&K receiver dropped from $2850 list to $1850 and I bought it. I returned it to the dealer because it was too complicated to set up. I have since determined that all HT receivers are a pain. I just found a brand new in box B&K AVR 202 for $999. So, at about 1/3 the original price, it was a bargain I could not pass up.

I originally bought the Monarchy SM-70 pair and ran them unbalanced. I committed to sell them, then tried them in balanced mode. VERY NICE. So, when I found a good deal on another pair, I bought them.

Enjoy,
