My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

@shadorne, this is indeed a crazy journey. That's one of the things that keeps making this thread interesting..
Yes guys I have pictures of all my set ups for insurance reasons and also in the event that I decide to create a YouTube channel. I don’t think anyone would doubt my ownership of all the items I talk about....
i don’t blow smoke up anyone’s @ss.
Focal Sopra 3s are in route to me. I will have vivid audio g1, Wilson Sasha 2 And focal Sopra 3s at once. Very different tier groups in terms of price.
Lastly, fine I have decided to fish Magico speakers after the focals. Now it’s a matter of finding a killer deal on them.
@whitecamaross

Great you have pics! Thx to post a few. A pic is worth more than 1000 words and you are well over 10000+ words on this website.

WC, I need to ask this....How long have you been into high end audio ? I have been at this for 50 years, and realized early on, how important room size, and room acoustics are, when dealing with a proper set up ( I want to also say, I have limited myself to only one hobby, and audio is it ). The room is mostly a given when dealing with the level of equipment you have had pass through your hands in these 2 years. The electrical requirements for some of the amplifiers you have had, as I have mentioned before, should have been beefed up and dedicated. I heard the G1s in a typical 15 by 20 room, and we got them to sound excellent ( yes, I had a friend just like you ). True, it was a " dedicated " 2 channel audio room, but it presented a wonderful sound ( and I am a horn lover ). Maybe you need a professional to build you a room ( and maybe, just to talk, lol ). I also believe, that if you have multiple pairs of large speakers in your room during your evaluation of each pair, you will be hearing all of them, especially the louder you play, and this will mess up everything. I wish you luck, and I will continue reading your thread. Enjoy ! MrD.
When you try to flip old used speakers that weigh several hundred pounds each and have to be crated and shipped presents a different set of challenges over just amps and preamps and other supporting electronics. You sorta have to marry speakers and divorce is very expensive lol. Listen to your prospective speakers at a dealer. If you love a certain brands sound like you do Wilson’s you should stay long term or move up that brands lineup till you reach the proper max size for your room. I have no desire for Maggie’s, Logan’s or horn speakers because as great as they may be in the proper room in my small 11x14 space would not work. I owned Tektons, Harbeth and Magicos before I found my sound. I moved up from Magico S1mk2 which I loved to the S3Mk2 for a bigger presentation and could not be happier. Nothing bigger would work in my non dedicated room....I think lol.
Plus not to mention when you change speakers you have just pushed the reset button on most if not all your previous research.
I don’t think magicos have the bass I like. I always hear the whole “accurate” argument with magicos. Listen, if I play bob Marley and the bass coming out of the speakers is not deep, tight and controlled then I don’t want those speakers. I doubt that when bob Marley recoded his music he asked to play flat sounding bass.

Hmmm... We should consider that WCSS is having fun, first and foremost.... While his never-ending quest is often a source of information/inspiration for many of us, he is not running a Customer Service group chat under contract.... As such, Many posts he responds to, and some he does not.... And that is just fine.... Do what I do, sit out in the shade, and sip icewater to chill out *Grins!*

G.

Oh ,I  get that .
It is just that he said he was gonna try Lyngdorf.
it would have been the perfect opportunity to do so .It would have substantially improved his room and speakers .
I am just disappointed and confused ,cause i thought he would try it .. like he said .. that's all.

WC....if you loved the Sasha’s you should consult with dealers or even with the manufacturer and get the largest size Wilson’s you can get away with in your size and type room. If you like that big dominating bass get a speaker that leans in that direction and sized properly.
Speaker placement is critical for bass along with room treatments. Are you using a frequency meter or app to find listening position? Or maybe hire a professional to set them up.
I have “no problem mon” with Bob Marley stuff and cranked up enough I have all the bass I want out of my Magicos. There again they are sized and placed correctly with help from my dealer which makes the whole thing worth every penny. If I move my seating position forward or backward I can make the bass overwhelming or underwhelming.
Is the Sasha 2 really in a higher league than the Sopra 3 ? This is a much interesting question and I can’t wait to read WC comments about it !

Sopra , Kanta, Magico A3, Dynaudio Contour 60, B&W 803d3, Revel 228Be.

These are the ´´new kids on the block’´, and the big question is always...do they really bring new benchmarks for the money compared to the classic top performers out there.
Whitecamaross - Knowing you like stats ,I have a stat for you . King Sound KS17 . One year old , current model .Looking to sell my pair . I know its not the household brand you like to buy and sell usually , but I think the price I am willing to Let them go at you would be safe . P.M if interested .
@whitecamaross  I don't know if this question has been asked : have you compared one M-900u against two of them bridged ?Is it only power differences and also more musical with two of them ?I would like to audition this amp with and Aries Cerat Impera II preamp.
grey9hound: i did not want to buy anything additional at this time because i am going to be changing speakers.

Maple: i don't want to venture with anything that is unknown. Remember, i gotta sell this stuff after i am done with i think the only amplifier i have held on to the longest has been the simaudio 860a which is still in my garage.

Thieliste: yes the 900u in mono mode are just brutally huge sounding. They have more bass, more soundstage, more depth than using a single one. This actually is an excellent question because the vivid audio g1 speakers DO NOT like a single 900u. They swallow power like it is water. They sing amazing with 900u monos though!
TECHNO DUDE; I don't think i will have the wilson audio sasha 2s here when the focal sopra 3s arrive next week. That said, i did spend plenty of time with the wilsons to remember their sound very well.
BREAKING NEWS:   I have just struck a deal with a connection of mine. I have finalized a deal on a pair of magico S5 Mk2 speakers with the mcoat finish. They will land here a week from this Saturday. This connection has been telling me for months that the magico will end my speaker search. He went ahead and also suggested the s5 mk2 for my room because he has done successful installs in the past in rooms of my size. I am pretty happy with the deal and can't complain. This becomes the second most expensive speaker i have owned (Vivid Audio G1 being the most expensive speaker) and now we will be able to really see what magico is all about.
My amplifiers will be the Gryphon 300,  Ref10/simaudio 860a. Source is esoteric k1 dac/sacd. I am highly excited because reviews praise the s5 mk2 and a few of my "audio advisors" have said that the magico is a great speaker. I hope they DO NOT disappoint.
Will i even open my sopra 3s? we shall see... i may not even open them if the magicos blow me away.
When you mention that the Magicos were suggested for your room, is it the current room or the room you've mentioned that you will be moving into next?
Thanks,Dave
´´To sum it up, on bass, dynamics, presence, stage size Wilson Maxx2 wins. On crystal midrange, resolution, tranparency, high fidelity, focus, Magico S5 mkii wins.´´

Quoted from the net. I think this is spot on what WC will be experiencing.

Let’s see guys !!
Today I played the vivid audio g1 with the gryphon 300
and wow it sounds awesome. Just incredibly big and detail with tons of slam. I was almost like “ do I really want to sell the G1s? Will the magicos beat these monsters in my room ? “

Wow so a lot of you guys are really supportive of my decision to go with the vivid audio g1 and luxman. I only had one person tell me that the g1 might overload my room with bass but I already have a plan in the event that it happens: it is called the Lyngdorf room correction. I plan on venturing with it if I can’t get the bass under control.

What happened to the Lyngdorf idea  WC ?
the vivid audio g1s have such a huge soundstage that my room literally gets overwhelmed by the massive amount of sound. For instance, when i use the luxman 900u in mono mode, they almost sound like they have an "echo" from the large picture of the sound and because i am 8 feet away from them. When i switch to an amp without such a big sound such as the diablo 300, they sound better because the soundstage is not as huge so it kinda "fits" better in my room. I am trying to force a big bald eagle inside a parrot's cage. You can't do that. They need more room to spread their wings. The vivid audio g1's have an insane amount of detail with bottom end, but my room takes away from the potential of the speakers. It hinders the entire sonic panoramic view that these speakers are capable of. I also don't want to just shove them in crates and let them sit there for over a year in my garage and have the florida heat cook them.
They are the best speaker i have owned. No contest against my wilson sasha.
Camaro ss,
I had my McIntosh 119 die recently and was by far the best sound I’ve had for 2 channel and movies compared to my Integra 80.3.I really don’t what to put more money in an old mx  119.Do you have any recommendations on a newer processor closer to the McIntosh in sound quality?I heard that newer McIntoshes are rebadged marantz units with a few more upgrades? The mx 119 was just a lot more life like then my integra! The integra 80.3 isn’t that bad but would like better if possible? Thanks!
W1000i: I do not yet.

Update: the gryphon 300 with vivid audio g1 sounds inf@incredible. I can’t believe how full sounding and detailed. Just blown away. I am here listening and can’t get off the couch. The gryphon sounds better than the ref10 with krell 700cx with my vivid audios. This wasn’t the case with my Wilsons.
"I heard that newer McIntoshes are rebadged marantz units with a few more upgrades?"

Talk about fake news...
WC......... " the gryphon 300 with vivid audio g1 sounds inf@incredible ". Can you imagine how much better it would be with some room treatments ? Enjoy ! MrD.
You you should hear the Gryphon Diablo 300 with Magicos........my nirvana at least.
corvette01, I am with roxy54. The fact that you reversed his numbers says a lot, as it is now understandable the confusion you have with Marantz and Mac.. Enjoy ! MrD.
Corvette01, I am sorry, just some humor. If you are looking for a preamp processor that sounds excellent with 2 channel music, post on the Home Theater thread, as you will get the help you need. Enjoy ! MrD.

ok Techno_dude... i wil let you respond to mauidj since you seem to understand my thinking fairly well. Or do you want me to respond to him that question that has been already answered in previous posts? Guido, you can also chime in and respond to Maudj since you also get what i am doing or have been doing on this thread for the last few years...
Just give you a a little context Mauidj, you either hate or love my thread. You either are in on this along with everyone else like techno_dude, guido, and many others that i can't recall now or you aren't... either way, it is totally fine :)

I feel certain that the Lyngdorf will fix your  problem of the speakers being too big for your room. It does for me in my room . If you don't try it you'll never know .
You would  be able to keep the Vivid Speakers with Lyngdorf. !!
@corvette01
The MX150 or MX160 is VERY Good sounding ,and has Lyngdorf Room Correction .
If you liked the MX119 , you will definitely like the 150 or 151
WCSS It's been my experience that using room correction because the speaker is too BIG for your room will be an uphill battle.  I would recommend looking for a high quality smaller speaker.  With your top tier electronics and a smallish room I think you will get the best SQ by matching the speaker to the room.... I use Roon's EQ to tame a 8db peak in the bass in my room because I have no choice but to place one of my speakers fairly close to a corner and because the speakers I have are ported through the bottom of the cabinet.  I am now looking for a sealed cabinet designed speaker with the hopes I won't have to use any room correction.
@ ron17
Have you used Lyngdorf room correction ?
It is Totally different and.. the Absolute best out there .
It will work. I am talking about Lyngdorf Room correction .
Which Room correction are you talking about ?
I have used:
Audyssey
ARC (Anthem Room Correction).
Yamaha's YPAO
McaCC (Pioneer)
RoomPerfect (Lyngdorf)
Lyngdorf is Head and Shoulders above all of the others.
The others are not in the same league. It really is unreal how good it is.
Just ask Grannyring (Bill Dion)
He has extensive experience in Hi-Fi Audio
You really cannot understand, until you try it ... Room Perfect
It is one of those things that  has to be tried to experience kit.
Its like trying to explain what it is like to actually go to or see Top Fuel (Funny Car or Dragsters)
You can try to explain it to someone , but unless they experience it for themselves , they really do NOT know.
Ron: this is why I just bought the magico s5 mk2. :)
they will be here in 9 days.
Greyhound: I guess I can’t speak about what you’re suggesting because you clearly have more experience with that piece. I guess maybe I’m just a bit iffy about room correction unless it’s just to fix bass issues.
My post actually came after yours to Ron about them being here in 9 days .
I was doing an edit on it
@grey9hound  I use Roon's EQ.  It allows you to manually EQ the frequency, Q and amount of attenuation.  I have tried Audyssey (with my HT setup) but it is an automatic system which I hated.  I only want to address the 1 or 2 frequencies (below 200hz) that my situation produces.  I have heard nothing but good things about the Lyngdorf RoomPerfect system and I'm sure it sounds great but in my system I wanted to do as little to the signal as possible.  I also wanted to keep the boxes and cables to a minimum.
@WCSS I think the Magico S5 mk2 is a better choice (for your room) and  can't wait to hear what you think of them....maybe when you are done with them you can send them my way!
@roxy54
07-20-2018 11:00am"I heard that newer McIntoshes are rebadged marantz units with a few more upgrades?"

Talk about fake news...

You are correct .. That is is "Fake News"
Check with Ron Cornelius @ McIntosh
Where did you here that BullSh@t Corvette01 ?
I really do not think any of you guys have experienced or used  "RoomPerfect".
It is the LAST WORD in room correction .
Have you every heard of an Audiophile type of person preferring any Room Correction ?
RoomPerfect is the ONLY Room correction that Audiophiles approve of .
It is the Ultimate in sound !
it is because it is the ONLY one that gets the BASS right and the "Time Domian" I never liked my sub with music ....Ever ..until "RoomPerfect"
It Must be heard to be believed !!!!

Greyhound, it’s no longer being made. Now they include it in their preamps and integrated which I have zero interest in buying. McIntosh has it but I don’t want to buy anything from them unless a crazy deal comes my way. Lyndorf retired the stand alone room correction. I suspect something better is coming.
