Blah blah blah.....he he. Preamps can shrink the natural soundstage as well as expand it......so can interconnects (some feel the Synergistic stuff unnaturally expands the soundstage....I wonder what the networked Transparent cables do?). The only way to know if the closed in soundstage (according to Jay compared to other preamps) on the 725 is natural is to straight wire bypass it. Most solid state preamps do not unnaturally expand the soundstage.....tubes, that is another story. Without straight wire bypass tests you cannot call the 725 natural or real or accurate. Viber likes to make up stuff to defend his position. Wish he would stick to what he experiences directly.....ie: direct sound tests in his own room. He says he abhors expensive equipment.....why keep posting here?
My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!
So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation,etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)
NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)
Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)
rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)
cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)
parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)
lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)
McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.
butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)
pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.
classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)
Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:
PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.
Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.
Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?
Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.
It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.
Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.
Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.
Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.
Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.
Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.
My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.
That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

@jays_audio_lab You mention an interesting phenomenon that I think actually effects all a’philes...to a greater or lesser extent. Why is it that on some days our perception of what we are hearing changes for the better...or worse? Coming from the pro audio world, we know that listener/aural fatigue is a huge factor. So much so, that if we are fatigued after a long flight or whatever, we should not play an instrument. As a’philes, many of us listen for hours on end, leading to aural fatigue. I have noticed this phenomenon myself, because while the system might be superb, even the best systems cannot make up for this factor. Therefore, it probably is not the system at fault, but it is your ability to concentrate and hear/decipher the music...after time. Happens to all of us. ( even those who don’t believe this!) |
You guys are finally realizing what I’ve been saying all along. Viber twists WC’s words to try and suit his agenda. He does it endlessly, and I mean endlessly. Look no further than WC’s last Soulution review video. WC makes the point emphatically for about the 1000th time that a good preamp is ALWAYS better than dac direct, in every way. But here comes Viber saying dac direct is preferable. Seen it a million times before. Then he insisted his amp was better than WC’s in some ways (clarity) yet WC tells Viber exactly how lacking Vibers amp really is after giving it a fair trial, but on we go with Viber continuing to twist WC words. Many others told him how his amp lacked clarity as well but he ignores things he doesn’t want to believe. The problem for Viber is he only reads reviews and listens to his stuff. He’s never heard top equipment like WC has yet he comments as if he has and starts making hand waving analogies to distract. Now many have had enough and are voicing their opinions and calling him out. Theory versus experience. I’ll take WC’s audio reviewing experience. |
Well folks, i brought the VAC monos back from the dead after not playing them for weeks and here are a couple of things that i can call out in order to differentiate the experience of going from top notch solid state to top notch tubes:
Ps: i am using cheap metal amp stands under the VACs and my cables are NOT calibrated for these amps and yet i am super impressed. What would happen if i sent my cables to get calibrated for VAC? what if i used the Artesania Master Kio stands under them? would they beat my solid state amps? kren0006, You should study my last post to learn something. I even gave you credit in a small way. There are general audio and musical principles that underlie all audio system listening. Although I have never personally tried Jay's gear, similar principles apply, which I have mentioned. Pity the person who lacks general understanding, whose only choice is to endlessly try more gear until he is bankrupt or burned out. This occurs at all price levels and degrees of wealth. I discussed how DAC direct is purer and more detailed than adding a preamp. Jay actually agrees with me on that aspect of sound, although he prefers the added flavor and dynamics of the extra preamp stage. BTW, if you claim that musical experience has nothing to do with audio system listening, just realize that you yourself rely on your own musical experience to choose and judge audio equipment. You have piano or other instrument training which gives you a reference. You have heard live piano in certain rooms or halls--those experiences have convinced you that the piano is not bright, so you choose electronics like ARC and Spendor speakers whose tweeter is not brilliant to suit your concepts and preferences. Nothing wrong with that. However, in large halls or environments at close distances, the same piano is much brighter and crisper, which I alluded to in my last post. Finally, imagine in the 23rd century, an alien just arrives with super hearing to 100 kHz, and threshold sensitivity of minus 20 dB at 3000 Hz. He can hear an ant crawl. A normal 10 year old Earth child with hearing to 20 kHz and thresholds of 0 dB is ridiculously hearing impaired by comparison. Who is more qualified to assess an audio system playing music? Not the alien with super hearing, because he has no experience hearing music and has heard no human voices speaking or singing. But the child is more qualified, because he has already had many years of experience hearing the voices of his parents and friends, and maybe a few years of musical experience playing instruments or hearing music in the street or wherever. Please respect my experiences, and I will do the same for you. But cut out your derogatory (direct or implied) remarks about me. In private emails and on this thread, Jay and I get along just fine, while maintaining somewhat different preferences. He is respectful, unlike you. But you can change that. I am reaching out, and hoping for a more fruitful sharing of ideas between us rather than negative bickering. |
Kren0006, Also, if you look at the YT votes on the 3 rounds of A/B between my Rouge and Jay's mystery amp, about 40% preferred mine, and 60% preferred Jay's. Not just votes, but there were plenty of detailed verbal analyses preferring mine for clarity and the same for Jay's on clarity. Many people thought the amps were close, and they couldn't make a decision as to preference. Even you had some doubts, and considered that there was a small but significant chance that #2 amp was mine. We agreed on that. It is true that the best listener was Jay in his room, but don't assume that all the YT comments were from people listening on their mediocre computer and were stupid. One guy even went all out to say that anyone who didn't think that #1 (mine) is more detailed needed to get his hearing tested. I thought he was extreme, and I honestly wouldn't say that. The great thing about Jay is that he considers and respects everyone's observations and opinions. He repeatedly says that his findings are his opinions only, based on his own listening and preferences. So don't make the mistake of latching onto anything he says as the gospel truth. You are doing the same thing of selectively supporting the findings and opinions of people who agree with you, which you criticize me of doing. |
I have the feeling that if you straight wire bypassed most tube gear........you would find it "adding" that "reel you in soul thrill". Not that there is anything wrong with adding some beauty. Especially since many recordings are stripped of some of their beauty during recording and playback . Much of the "live beauty" can be captured using solid state and tweaking your stereo to the max (no binding posts, no fuses, no LEDs, cables off floor, super line conditioning, super ground system, etc.). Viber6, What DAC are you using to do your evaluations? Seems I remember the Benchmark DAC 1? |
TUBES....... I think a lot of it depends on what kind of music you listen to. In my experience tubes are more "real" sounding. Depending on the recording the Artist can be In your room , playing live , with tubes. Tubes tend to have more SOUL. If you listen to a lot of Electronica for example ,or that type of music Solid State , can be more dynamic, give your more Slam and be better at transients or fast swings or changes. The biggest problem IMO with tubes is knowing when one is bad or not working quite right. It is not always easy to tell. Sometimes things just do not seem to be quite right. then you have a lot of troubleshooting to find out.. It is not always Glaringly Apparent. Is it a Phase splitter tube , a rectifier tube , or one of the output tubes ??? It can make you pull your hair out !!! Look at JAY ! LOL just kidding ., of course |

To a lesser extent, bypassing even excellent SS gear like line stages (easy to do) shows that all electronics adds something, which is usually warmth. I did this bypass test with both the tube and SS preamps I had. Listening to the phono stage alone, going direct to amp, vs the whole preamp (phono plus line stage) going into amp, showed more dynamics, warmth or "soul" for the latter, vs more clarity, transparency with loss of warmth/soul using phono direct. The same applies to DAC direct into amp vs DAC + line stage into amp. Depending on priorities, one is better than the other. For warmth/soul advocates, adding a preamp, or using tubes for any component is better. For clarity/transparency advocates, using SS like the 725 is better than a tube preamp, or DAC direct is better than even that. Too bad Jay is not able to try the Soulution 760 DAC to determine the relative advantages of DAC direct vs the 725 or another preamp added in. ricevs, My Benchmark DAC 1 displays more warmth using my Sony CD player's digital out into it, compared to my Sony CD player complete, both into my Rane EQ, then into amp. This is an apples/oranges test, since with the Sony complete I use the Sony internal DAC. The Illuminati RCA 1 meter digital interconnect (Chris Somovigo designed before Kimber took over Illuminati) is excellent, but perhaps the extra interconnect is imposing its character on the chain. That's why some companies encourage an all in one CD player. Dan D'Agostino at Krell advocated the integral CD player approach rather than separates. All this is consistent with your idea that wires affect the sound. The simplest, shortest chain is best for clarity. Whatever the explanation, I now prefer my Sony CD player alone. |
Viber6, I suggest "improving" your playback system instead of trying to "prove" something to people on this forum. A stock Sony CD player playing untreated CDs and not on great line conditioning and great footers and stand will give you nothing like what can be decoded from the CD. I am assuming a lot here. Maybe.....you already do some of the above. Sony CD players can sound great if greatly modded. None sound good stock.....none. The Benchmark DAC 1 is a joke.....each Benchmark DAC since then is better and many people prefer many DACs under $4k to the Benchmark 3. To get the "real" sound from a CD you must treat it like crazy. You need to sand the outer and inner edge.....black the out and inner edge and the clear area around the center hole and also black the whole top of the CD or at least put 6 black lines on it. Opaque flat black paint marker (not ink) is best. Then you must treat both sides of the CD with a great CD treatment (I use Ultrabit Platinum plus).....then you must use the Herbies Super Black hole CD mat and you must destatic or demagnetize the CD on each play (destaticing or demagnetizing only lasts 6-7 minutes however......but while it is still effective....OMG). I don’t understand how you can seriously hear anything (including doing straight wire bypass tests) using an extremely limiting source. |
I just finished an 8-hour listening session. I listened to everything including Rob Zombie and it was phenomenal how the system plays EVERYTHING with insane resolution and speed. I STILL CAN NOT believe it sounds this good without a music server. I hope you all get ready for what lies ahead and with the next set of monoblocks that hopefully hit my door early next month. 500 lbs of metal between both. |

I know it is getting pretty specific, but I would be really curious if you can hear a difference between the premium black and regular green qkore wire on the same component (if you have the right terminations to try the comparison). |
The grounding system, Nordost qb8 plus all the Shunyata and opus powercords have given my system a level of clarity that would make anybody’s jaw drop. The clarity, the depth, the vocals are clearer than ever and the high frequencies are unable to bite you regardless of the song played or the volume levels. Okay, makes sense, but then why so slow to reveal the monos and preamp? Is it because you don't think it quite sounds good enough without a server and you don't want to reveal the brand and then people will think it isn't very good? Just trying to make sense of the delay because you haven't done this extreme before .... |
@maxwave I have a Nordost Qbase8 (distribution strip) and a Qkore6 (passive grounding unit). Used in conjunction they brought my system to a whole new level of musicality. Before I added the Qkore6, I had my Qbase8 wired to a grounding rod driven 6' deep in my yard. When I purchased the Qkore6, I eliminated the grounding rod. The difference was definitely an improvement in my system's noise floor. This is what Jay is now using for grounding and AC distribution. The QRT (Qv2 and QK1) AC line harmonizers are passive plug-ins that are meant to be plugged into the Qbase8 or into an outlet on the same dedicated line your system is plugged into, to further reduce noise. I was told by my Nordost dealer these line harmonizers are best used at a ratio of (2) Qv2's to (1) QK1. I have that ratio of line harmonizers (3) plugged into 3 unused slots of my Qbase8. Compared to the Qbase8 / Qkore6 combo the line harmonizers are subtle but noticeable. For technical info. I would contact Nordost, or a Nordost dealer..... Hope this helps. |
@maxwave I think you would need to check with Castello about the effect of using two of their grounding units. In addition to what @ron17 said, I use the QKore and a CAD GC1 grounding block. I have found additional benefit of grounding my preamp with both the QKore and CAD, but I am fairly confident Nordost does not recommend using two QKore ground lines, from the same or separate Qkore, to the same component as the effect will not be additive. |
