My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Is a consideration of the Transparent the cost of termination? Are their power cords "configured" for each component and if so, will re-terminating them be significant? Are their power cords are similar to their interconnects and speaker cables in this regard?
Random Suggestion:

WC, if you have a gym and bench in your house, it would be kickass to get a couple old 135 lb mono amps, bore holes through them, weld a bar to each, and use it for bench pressing.

An image of you knocking out a rep could be your home page for your channel. Maybe change title to Jay’s Audio Gym. 6-plate Amp Analysis.

Anyway, random thought for the day....
@tjassoc

Transparent opus are $5800 for 2m and the boulder termination costs 170 dollars per cable so you’re looking at 5970x2.
Their power cords don’t need to be calibrated like their interconnects and speaker cables. They work on any component.
As far as the audio quest hurricane I have here, it would cost me like 250 per cable so 500 dollars total.
So we are essentially talking 12,000 dollars or 500 dollars... That said, the key here is if I want to try transparent opus for the first time or do I want to simply roll over the audio quest hurricanes with boulder.
Yes, I couldn’t use either one of these cables with any other amp I have here. Both companies can convert them down the road to 15a or 20a for the same prices I mentioned above (170 boulder and 250 audioquest).
I was thinking of sending my dragon powercords instead but the issue is that I need those for the mephisto or any other potential Amplifiers down the road. Remember, the dragon are $9800 per 2m cable.
Well this didn't take long...I just paid for the transparent opus powercords for the boulders... I think, my gut is telling me, we are about to hear something mind-blowing soon... This should easily elevate this boulder set up to levels never heard before.
I wonder if Boulder is one of those amps that is so well built that nothing affects their sound...like footers or power cords.
That’s what we are ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL about to find out and if that’s the case then we have found one hell of a component.
What I can say is that the gold tunning bullets from synergistic research sound OMG with boulder. I am almost 100% sure (almost) that I won’t be trying more interconnects or speaker cables in a LOOOOOOONG time. The sound is outstanding.
However, next week, Nordost odin speaker cables will be coming back to me because I took them in as part of a deal I put together but I don’t expect them to stay here for the long haul ( I might hang on to them just so that I have a second set of speaker cables to mix things up with other amps) Wait, more amps?
Yep...wanna guess what amps are coming back for a second round in my room? Next week we will know!
Guesses...
Memphisto 👹 👹will battle soon... Very soon once again
@ron17
far from not affecting the sound, jay has reported that it has deteriorated the performance and this is pathetic.
it also indicates and we can infer that generically designed components will not work as one size fits all..
footers custom made for components are needed, factoring in the weight distribution, center of gravity, placement of transformers etc for a component especially like boulder for which the footer has to be custom designed. then we can predictably talk or expect about the footers doing some good or enhancing the performance positively.
@goodsource
Oh course custom footers made by Boulder are needed to properly distribute weight etc.... I have tried isolation devices, cables and room treatments that DID NOT work with my system but I would not call them pathetic. This thread is about exploring components, speakers, cables and even isolation devices that create a system synergy. If you have read this entire thread you would realize that it's easier said than done. I have a mix of Critical Mass shelves and footers, Stillpoints and Nordost SortKones in my system. I tried a CM shelf under my Mola Mola Makua preamp and it went south, just like it did with Jay and the Boulders....not a good match. I then moved it under my Simaudio 870a amp along with CM footers and it elevated my system to sonic heights not achieved before. Some of the best systems I have heard were supported by CM racks and footers....A while back Jay encountered speaker cables that would not work with his Mephisto....pathetic? No, they were incompatible. I offered Jay my 2 sets of Stillpoints Ultra 6's to try under the Boulder amps. U6's won't need any break in time....will they be a good match for the Boulders? Don't know....but if they don't improve the sound like they have done for thousands of users I wouldn't call them pathetic, I would say they weren't a good match....With all due respect I think you missed the point of seeking out the products that work best together to elevate your system....This hobby / passion of ours is a trial by error game we all must play.
There is also something else i was thinking about which was that MAYBE the footers are not really adding too much more than what the maxxum stands already are. Let's say that the stands added 15% improvement (again, this is hypothetical), the footers might only be adding 1% or less. However, maybe if i had the boulders on a regular wood stand and i added the footers then i would easily hear the benefits of the footers?
Joe said that adding the footers on his stands would be incremental improvements, but MAYBE there really isnt that much of an improvement if you already own one of his best stands?
That's possible, but I don't think you were receiving any benefit from the CM amp stands. The boulder feet were resting on the metal frame of the stand, not the filter part of the platform. I think like you said a better test would be to place the amps on a wood stand or Butcher block platform and insert the footers between the amp and the wood stand....but then it would require more settling in time...yikes! If you went that route you should also try the Ultra 6's which require zero break in.
My guess is that Stillpoints would still require a few days to settle in, but definitely not the 2,3, or 4 weeks or more of the CMS footers.
Dave
You may be right about that Dave but I would say you get 95% of the benefit of the device immediately upon installing them, as long as they are installed correctly.
All this makes me wonder if the footers are fully compressed and therefore not working. I keep thinking this could be a problem but have not posted since I'm not anything more than cursorily acquainted with CMS footers or the company.
This weekend we will know... I don't quite believe in having to do square root of 5 time 36 divided by 3 in order to find the exact location of where the footers should go especially when Joe himself doesn't even say that to me. It's simple, lift the amp, place the footers and make sure they are seated under the amp and not the feet. The end...
@ron17  -  i get your point what you are saying.trial and error should also have some basis .it should not be some fluke or totally random thing.
the manufacturer  here seems to be clueless on when the product will settle in or give results or what is even the right way to install it for boulders.
ofcourse we are thankful to jay for doing the trial and error so that we came to the correct conclusion.not everyone can be experimenting like jay as well.
ofcourse audiophiles experiment and there is trail period which is good.but this is precisely the problem with the high end audio industry. resonance control is not vodoo and its a far more predictable science than cables or any other thing.
at these kind of prices if these products dont come up with proper explanation of working. behaviour, installation and results, it is apalling.

and more than treating this trial and error it teaches us the lession that at this level of components one should not be buying such generic components without any basis or explanation, instead of go for custom made according to characterstics and specs of the electronics in use.
I’m going to say that once you remove the CM footers your going to realize how much better it sounded with them then with the stock feet because the change was slow and graceful and you’ll  stick with the stock feet because you don’t have the patience to wait another 3-4 weeks . There is no fluke on these footers with many members on Whatsbestforum using them on system,s on par and far above Jays system .
Some of you really need to get over to WBF forum and read up on why these guys with 6 & 7 figure system do things . It’s called whatbestforum because these guys search for the best to improve there system regardless of cost .

Sometimes in this hobby you end up going two steps backwards before you go two steps forward.
Keep in mind, my trial involves Boulder 2150. I am under the belief that I am probably the only boulder 2150 owner who CURRENTLY posts on any forum. I am also extremely clear that our mind loves to play tricks on us. If you stare at a white wall for 30 days hoping it will turn black then guess what? If you stare at it long enough you will see it turn black... The power of delusion is a thing...

That said, we will need to wait until this weekend to see what ends up happening. The only thing I’ll tell you all right now is that I’m not going to be waiting months for something to "sing". If something takes months to work, this man right here ain’t spending his money on it. I couldn’t even wait on the damn bus to go to school. If you all want to wait months for something to "sing" then that’s cool (it’s your money).
I also couldn’t order a car and wait 2 years to take delivery because by the time I take delivery of it, I have probably already read encyclopedias about it and I’m bored by the time I get it. The honeymoon phase left my veins by then.

When it comes to other forums and reading non stop what others are doing, I see it as a valuable resource when you are perhaps running into an issue or something isn’t working correctly etc. I used to read the avsforum a LOOOOOOONG time ago when I was into home theater and then I realized I was not enjoying anything anymore because I was always reading constant critiques or people who knit pick a lot about a component they own and I started to become the same. If I heard a "click " inside a component I would be like " oh crap I think it’s defective, I need to return it " and then I would get the replacement and I would be literally searching for that click again constantly day in day out. It just made me miserable and I didn’t enjoy it. That’s why I limit myself and I try to just do my thing in here and only read other forums when I am probably interested in a product that I am planning to bring or perhaps I want to know what cables someone has used with it etc. That’s it.

There are certainly some heavy hitters on what’s best forum. No question about it. I thought about posting over there and starting a new thread but I don’t have the time. I don’t really have the bandwidth to maintain two threads plus a YouTube channel. I haven’t posted a video lately because I’m taking a breather. It’s starting to get a little overwhelming and so I’ll just kinda pace myself a little more. I did a full year of videos 3 times a week so now I need to balance things better.
There is also the fact that I just don’t have much interest in many amps out there. The very few that remain such as the relentless, dartzeel 468s, Boulder 3050s, etc cost as much as a house AND they aren’t widely available. Most of those 3050s are in Asia and I don’t know a single person who owns the dartzeel other than Michael Fremer. These amps are as rare as big foot is which also makes them ridiculously expensive to buy even if they are used.
I mean I’ll still bring an amp here and there if I happen to strike up a deal but I can’t sit here and tell you that I am like ACTUALLY looking to bring anoother amp. I’ve pretty much accepted that the mephisto and boulder are on another planet and everything else I’ve heard or owned is below them both.
When it comes to amps, I'm pretty much 98% done. Sure there are many amps I can try but I'm only talking about amps I am interested in and not those obscure brands.
It will be a few years before I see an amp that I really want to bring in here.
OK goodsourse we get it....you find the company's lack of info on their products appalling and their performance pathetic.
Jay, love your content on the Youtube channel, especially the long form discussions sharing your thoughts on the components. A future video that I'm looking forward to is the Wilson video you teased earlier where you would go through the entire family line and share your thoughts and sweet spots.

Another very interesting video idea could be talking through your journey and learnings on room treatment in your room, and how you made it work with a home theatre setup as well. Keep up the good work!
When you get at the top of the ladder, the only way is down.

So the key to keeping the story alive is WC trying more affordable gear like he did with the Tektons.

Because WC has solid experience with reference system and brands, he can now tell his audience how other less expensive products compare.
Great idea! I would also recommend trying some cables under $5k and note differences with flagship examples.

BTW WC, the Luxman 900u gear is still here and crushes anything near it's price range that I've owned. Still working on matching cables that don't cost more than one of the components. 😁
I’m glad you still love your luxman gear. Those components will go down in history as one of the best ever built.
If I had to downsize and needed to build a good system for a lot less money than what mine currently is, I’d do this:
Revel salon 2
Luxman monos/simaudio 860
Arc ref10
Dcs Bartok
Wireworld platinum or gold series 7 cables throughout

That system would put a world of hurting on far more expensive systems.
ARC Ref10 paired with Luxman amps instead of matching Luxman pre? Is there much benefit to running monos of the 900u’s rather than stereo? My Acoustic Zen Crescendo II’s are very efficient.

Has there been any word on Luxman 1000 gear to replace 900?
Monos will ways have the upper hand. Yes they are better than a single luxman. I prefer the ref10 for revel salon 2. It has nothing to do with luxman preamp. The ref10 made my salons come to life and they had tremendous bass with it.
The Boulder 1100 series are incredible performers, would be a great candidate for comparison at a lower price tier.

if you are looking for a bit of a change buy a technics sl1200gr and a $40 buck phono stage from radioshack.  for like $2k USD try vinyl.  just for a laugh.  just for a change?

@whitecamaross What is the verdict on the Center Stage footers? I placed a few sets under my amp and DAC last week so waiting another week to find out if things change. Didn’t hear one person say they didn’t work until this thread so took a chance on them. Surprised they haven’t worked out for you...
-Alex
@my_gray   Jay has already expressed his reluctance to enter that rabbit hole. That said,  if he ever changes his mind, l'm pretty sure many in his legion would lend Jay some of their pretty respectable dubbie components for him to whet his whistle. All he has to do is ask.

I can’t share the verdict yet...you’ll need to watch the next upcoming video where I will play the system with and without footers BUT nobody will know what is playing... That is KEY because a lot of people would be biased If they knew which presentation has the footers. Let your ears decide... Yes I have my verdict and I will be releasing my thoughts AFTER you all listen to both presentations first.
Boulder footers were removed last night and then I began to listen. The change was EASILY HEARD and I was shocked. Did things get better or worse after removing the footers?
You will soon find out.
The first set sounds ripe and bloated... The second set sounds sterile and harmonically limited... Not sure which one has footers, and which one does not.

G.

First time I'm going to comment on what I heard (because I listen through a TV used as a monitor on my computer). I was told by a respected individual that a difference could be heard. There are certain aspects that cannot be considered - imagining is a critical one.
That said, the first presentation seemed to have much more air, articulation and presence. Sibilance seemed to be a little more pronounced as well.
Still - I'm uncertain if listening over the internet is valid.

Thank you for the feedback. You'll get my impressions on a future video.
Keep your feedback coming !
2nd presentation lost some "life" and just didn't engage like 1st presentation did. My guess is 1st is without footers.
Sometime, vibrations on gear has to be drained ( coupled to ground). Not damped.
That is surely why those footers don’t mix well with Boulder amps.
Wednesday at 12pm ET you'll know my thoughts on this experiment.
I want to give everyone the chance to to listen and watch the video first.
Also, if I can, I'll be doing a live chat Tuesday night where I will unveil the amplifier that has made a return.

I thought Presentation #1 was much more dynamic and 3D sounding.  Presentation #2 was less dynamic, sounded compressed, and more 2D.

Don't have a guess as to which was which (footers or not, since I've never heard such footers before), but I prefer Presentation #1.
Has anyone ever wondered the level of transparency that my current system must have?
Think about it, you all are able to hear a footer change through youtube...that’s how ridiculously transparent the boulder gear is. That’s one of the most fantastic things about it. We have criticized youtube for compressing things and not really allowing us to hear everything and yet we can hear footers?
If you could only be here to listen and analyze things in person, I think you’d be shocked.
I'm happy you all can hear footers changes through youtube. That's pretty awesome 😎

absolutely jay. when you reach to a system of this level.elecronics, amps and speakers become most transparent.and cables and accessories become least transparent comparatively and they are colored.so every change in cable or accessories lead to noticeable difference in sonic output and coloration.
