My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Yes indeed. The funny thing is that it doesn’t sound loud with the 1.2s and the luxman preamp. Things just get larger and still remain smooth. Zero harshness.
Every increase of 3db is a doubling of the sound intensity or acoustic power which is not quite the same as doubling of loudness which is an altogether different matter entirely and is affected by many other factors.
That said 100db is freaking loud by any standards especially indoors where reverberation has even greater effects.
Enjoy Whitecamaross!

@whitecamaross, you might discover that if you let the Bel Canto Black grind on a recording at low volume for some three days, the residual treble fatigue during transients will go away, the bass will be much more present, and the entire frequency range will assume greater harmonic texture... Such behavior is characteristic of well implemented NCore designs.

In general, class D amps are best left on 24/7, anyhow.

G.

I am on day ten of the 24/7 burn in of the Bel Canto Black EX DAC & stereo power amp. If you are talking about that screechy edge, it goes away in 4 or 5 days, but the system continues to improve, in part due to switching to Ethernet input and SEEK on day 8.  Using YG Carmel with subwoofer.

Hello Markalarsen, congrats... Keep at it with your 24/7 breakin, It will continue for another month or so, and, unless Black is so different from other NC1200 amps, it will continue to open up and refine... Knowing what Jon Stronczer does with his amps, the end result is bound to be incredible!

NC1200 amps require patience *Grins!*

The new/current retail price of each Luxman piece is now $14,995. They have a new distributor.

I pulled the retail number for the Luxman from a Sound Stage review: The C-900u and M-900u retail for $19,000 apiece. Maybe not US dollars?

Actually the Luxman TOTL separates were previously priced through distribution in the US at $19,900 each after initially being introduced at $19,000. Since Luxman has now taken over distribution themselves for the US market they have been able to significantly reduce their pricing to $14,995 each. That type of price reduction is to be expected by eliminating a complete layer in their distribution chain.
Whitecamaross,

I have already a very decent and enjoyable low end at lower volumes, so  even at moderate low levels it's really fun to experience the power and control.
Regardless of volume, the amount of bass here is in the same proportion to the mids-heights and that's a must in my opinion.
I sadly heard too many system's which came to life only at higher volumes.

Cranking up means indeed the big slam with the PL 500 II, which is capable of 120 db. So with the volume of 100 db you are not precisely near the end of the road.

My obvious amp indeed is big and powerful, in your case at this moment the McIntosh 1.2 kw.
Interesting for me to hear these in a different setup as heard before, to make clear what they are capable of.

Did you have any experience with Gryphon. They are receiving very good reports throughout.

Someone asked me what I thought of the salon 2s since I’ve owned them. My take?
I cant be more honest with you all than to say they are the worst sounding speaker I’ve owned. No bass in my room and my friend who owned the ultima 2s also said he had no bass. Long story short , the platinum 500iis are the best speaker sounding speaker that I’ve had in my room. The only reason why I like them a little more than my clx is because they have full massive bass attack without a sub. The salon 2s are a perfect example of a great marketing plan by revel aka Harman. There’s nothing about them that made me be like Omg wow. As a matter of fact I passed on 2 different deals thrown at me by several of my connections. I know some hearts will be broken by my statement but I don’t like anything about the salon 2s.
The monitor audio platinum 500iis smoke and pulverize the salon 2s by miles. It’s not even a contest. I had almost given up on the monitor audio platinum line until I brought the 500iis home. They are leaps and bounds ahead of the rest that monitor audio produces.
I also don’t really like sealed speakers because they don’t seem to have the same slam that ported speakers have. Another thing is WHY choose sealed over ported ? You can always plug the ports :)
I also loved the cremonese but I felt my ears preferred panels and then the platinums 500s showed me that there is such thing as a speaker that sounds just like a panel does. The platinums 500iis sound extremely close to an electrostatic but without the drama of having a small sweet spot or hard placement. I don’t see myself getting out of my 500s until either dynaudio releases the new confidence 3 line that will release next December or perhaps a new Revel salon 3 which is said to have berillium midrange drivers.
Again, I speak from my personal experiences here. I give my input because I’ve owned something and not based on what I read. Unfortunately I live in Florida and we have limited exposure to great brands. I wish I lived in Chicago or Michigan or California where I could really get out and try everything.
Hi Whitecamaross,
Fantastic thread I have been following since the beginning. Regarding Ayre, I would not disparage their products without listening to their top end separates in your system. I recently bought an Ayre kxr-20 and have been listening to it for several days. All I can say is that I cannot stop listening to my system after inserting this preamp. It is state of the art in every respect. Ayre is all about smoothness. It may not impress early on but the more you listen to it, the more you get hooked to it. However, the feedback I have received is that while both Ayre mxr-20 and kxr-20 are superb performers, it is the preamp (kxr-20) that is extra special. I would encourage you to hear it in your system so that you can compare it to the Luxman preamp.
Anshul
I concur- whitecamaross
I was not impressed w/ Aerial nor Revel. Keep auditioning and writing.
Happy Listening!
Thanks guys. Right now, I’ve decided to find a far superior dac than the ps audio direct stream. I suspect that this will make all the difference in my system and elevate my luxman to even greater levels. I am looking into the luxman d08u and also the chord Dave.
The Chord DAVE on its own wasn't that impressive to me. However, when you add the Blu2, it becomes a beast.
I went from the PS Audio DirectStream to Bricasti M1 to Jeff Rowland Aeris and finally to the Chord Dave. Every component change is about system synergy. Although I could easily hear the differences between DACs, there isn’t a night and day difference. Inserting the Chord Dave was significant in my system: detail, better instrument separation(especially front to back placement), air, but more than anything dynamics and the natural decay of music improved. Is the Chord Dave the end all, be all DACs? No, but worth a listen. There is always something better/different or something someone else prefers.
I compared the DAVE to my Esoteric K-01X. I was told that it would be an exceptional DAC. It fell short of K01-X’s performance.
Interesting guys... let me hear anymore feedback on dacs that would improve my ps audio direct stream please...
My friend replaced his Esoteric K01-X after hearing the Dave in his system. Although the Esoteric is almost twice the cost of the Chord Dave. Different system, different ears, different preferences. No one is right or wrong.
I should add he replaced the Chord Dave with Burmester.

Interestingly, the Esoteric K-01X single box CD/SACD player has been replaced by the K1. According to all user reports I have read this far, K1 comfortably exceeds the performance of K-01X.

Worth pointing out that one of the difficulties of quick shootouts among DACS is that one might be pitting a well broken in device against one that is relatively newish off the factory floor. In such case, the newer device will inherently be performing at a disadvantage.

Furthermore, some DACs are designed to be "launch&forget" devices, while other ones are very sensitive to the selection of various upsampling rate and filters.... Each filter needs to be broken in separately... and Each combination of filter+upsampling potentially yields vary different results.

Finally, different DACs may be optimized for operation under different transmission protocols.... E.g. SPDIF, or USB, or single AES/EBU, or double AES/EBU.... And let's not forget the impact of external clocks.

In the end, comparing DACS -- while a fascinating process -- can be quite a significant enterprise, just to say it mildly.

This is WHY I am loving the black system. You get all 3 pieces and you’re a DONE.  While the guy next door is trying to mix and match components (aka me), the other guy with the black system is laughing enjoying his set up while you’re trying to play catch up to his. THIS IS what I am starting to love about the black system. It just sounds good all the time no matter what you play.
G.,
Exactly! You said it better than me. The Chord Dave is supposed to be optimal via USB and so is my Antipodes DS GT music server. Maybe that's why I prefer them in my system. I'm tired of "better", I  like prefer.
A friend I met through Audiogon came over a couple of days ago. Both of us have Jeff Rowland 625 S2 amps, but the rest of our systems are different, because our preferences are different.
We respect each other's perspective. If all of us could learn to respect each other, our "hobby" / "addiction will be better off.

I am starting to feel like simplicity is key to enjoy anything in life. The black system
offers just that and I love that about it. No need to be worried about what else can I connect to it to make it sound better etc. I was just connecting my reference 6 and 1.2kws etc, and trying to hear different things and it still didn’t elevate things above the black system. The only downfall about the black system ? A simple one, it’s a huge investment for marginal returns when you’re ready to move out of it. You won’t get anywhere the same return as if you owned solid state pieces because the acceptance isn’t there yet.
That said, there are only approximately only 26 black systems sold in the United States according to the info I received today. This should tell you only very few have had the chance to hear this set up. Let me just say, it’s a game changer and those of you who haven’t heard it should not go hear it unless you want to empty your bank account.
whitecamaross,
You have me thinking...I can sell all of my components and get the Bel Canto Black system:). Does the system include a source?
Yes the preamp is a dac as well. You just need to connect your laptop via usb and then watch your jaw drop. Even pandora sounds like high resolution. It’s crazy how amazing this is. I am two seconds away from buying and selling the rest. I just need to put it down on paper first and be 200% sure
So I can keep my Antipodes DS GT music server and connect it via USB in lieu of connecting a computer?
whitecamarros . Before you shell out those big bucks there is another system you should look into . The Exogal /ion  dac/amp combo . Retail under 8k . They have  streamers coming to market either as i type or very soon . They will also have a more powerful amp coming this year .
You really need a dedicated server to replace that laptop like a Aurender W 20 or N10 then watch your jaw drop.

Check out Douglas Shroeders review on Dagogo of the Exogal  . As a point of reference i drive Electrostats with it . King Sound ks17 . The ion amp is stable down to 2ohms .
I’ve had the nh10 before. Sold it and yes it was good but what you need to understand is that the Belcanto does not care where the signal is coming from or what sends the signal. It has its own trickery to turn any digital signal into something amazing. I am telling you that it just needs a usb signal from wherever and it takes it to a whole new level.
Well guys, I am getting excited and may end up keeping this system. I may end up selling a bunch of audio equipment if I decide to keep the black system because it allows me to sell what I don’t have use for.
I can’t deny it. The system sounds really amazing.
@whitecamaross   Interesting comment about the Revel Salon 2s being the worst because of lack of bass.  I don’t own them but did have a chance to listen to them some time ago.  I thought they sounded very natural, transparent, and well balanced across the entire frequency spectrum.  I can certainly see from your many posts, bass alone seems to carry a lot of weight in your assessment of speakers.
I’m now watching a movie in 2 channel mode using the rca inputs on the back of the preamp and feeding the signal from
the Yamaha cxa5100. It sounds outstanding to say the least. Man it’s really something so incredible.
This hobby is subjective. However, you heard the salons a long time ago prior to the release of platinum 500s. I can bet anything you want that if you bring the salons 2 next to my 500s, you’re going to be very disappointed. I’m an electrostatic guy deep down but I found a speaker that gives me so much of what panels do while having bass and with a big sweet spot. I have no regrets of selling any of my previous speakers. These 500s do everything that I like. I have zero complaints about them other than they are heavy as hell and hard to move around.
I will decide this weekend what I am going to do. Ideally I’d like to keep the black system and one solid State preamp whether it’s the reference 6 or luxman so that I can continue to try different amps in my future. I already know the luxman preamp is outstanding and what it can do. I’ll need to eliminate most of my other stuff and get down to only the essentials for the future. My back is still very tender and I’m in crazy pain from when I threw my back out about a month ago picking up a 1.2kw off the floor. this is the reason why I don’t think I’ll get the boulder. Too heavy and don’t want to deal with that right now.

Ok guys, going to bed at 2am... I went from about 9pm through 2am listening to music videos on tv from YouTube and it’s still something I can’t explain how different and organic this Belcanto sounds. It sounds so real at times that i think someone is talking all the way in the kitchen and it turns out it’s the speaker closer to the kitchen giving such a huge soundstage with clarity that feels too real to be true. I don’t see how any of my set ups can improve on this. It’s just too complete of a system to really come close to it. It would take ultra high end sources, amps, cabling etc etc to perhaps best this black system. I have no desire to hear anything else right now. I’m glued to my chair and just keep hearing an insane amount of detail in anything I play that I never picked up on any of my other set ups.
Last comment I wanted to make is that I found myself listening at 85-87db and I totally enjoyed the presentation. I did not feel I needed louder to enjoy. Almost as if the speakers stay alive with lower volume levels and this just started to happen with the black system. It didn’t really happen before or at least it wasn’t as noticeable to my ears. I always felt like cranking things up to 90+ to enjoy but it’s not the case with the black system. Zero need to blast it to enjoy it.
It just goes to prove the saying "everything sounds great until you hear something better"!

Not only that but the reality is that most of us think our set ups sound incredible but the reality is you won’t know until you do a real a/b comparison in your own home. That’s the only way to really know how good or bad your set up is.
I tried to explain to someone on Audiogon why after owning three different speakers from the same company, I thought there were better options and they just couldn't understand. It's easy, after hearing several speakers in my own system, I looked at what I thought was so great from another perspective. If you are unhappy with your sound, the only way to find out why is to listen to other equipment. The speakers I had were great, but through listening I discovered I preferred a different sound. Through lots of listening I now understand I have a preference for a neutral to very slightly on the dark side of neutral sound. So, listening not only exposes the weakness in one's system, but "should" help bring forth individual preferences.
Correct. Sound is subjective. That said, I still think you should go out there and get yourself a black system haha. It is a game changer for digital and analog. Yesterday was a testament at how amazing it also handles analog signals. Basically, the system will turn an analog signal into digital internally and send it to the amps digitally. This analog signal now becomes purer  and cleaner sounding. Less noise, bigger soundstage, etc. The luxman set up couldn’t do that because it will take the incoming signal and let you hear it as it comes. This is another HUGE advantage of the black system.
Out of curiosity I'm looking into getting a home auditions of the Black System.
Just got done listening to the luxman for 5 min and here’s what I’m hearing after getting acquainted with the black systems sound signature:
luxman: crazy smoothness and detail. Nice big sound stage. Never fatiguing, never boring, but it loses on instrument separation and sound. It feels as if the black system articulated the music just a tad better. Think of it as the way some people enunciate words Better than others. The Belcanto enunciates better with more background detail. However, I still believe the luxman set up can close the gap if you used a world class dac with it. Things could get extremely close at that point.
I love the way this black system has me looking at the ceiling, side hallway, and in all directions and me thinking it’s my wife walking upstairs or in the kitchen when in reality it’s the system making me hear things all over the room.
The sad thing is...as you alluded to before...you will probably lose 20K on the Bel Canto if you ever decide to ditch it...unless you got a demo at a good price or a great deal from a dealer you do a lot of business with.  Thats going to be a Major factor for those not rolling in dough.   Worse case scenario one would only lose 5K ditching the Luxman pair most likely
Excellent point. That is the sad point about the black system so yes you need to buy it right from the get go.
also, the black system is Belcantos baby and dealers get terminated if they get caught doing deep discounts. If you are looking to buy a used combo then that will be difficult as well because as I said, there are only 26 black systems in the entire country. I am the only one with a black system in Florida.
Also, Belcanto told me their black system won’t be ever abandoned by them. It will be upgraded as new things come out. For example, the new upgrade for the preamp is 5,000 dollars. This will give you mqa, ability to stream from your iPad, subwoofer output and a few other inputs. It will make it fully compatible with all formats. That’s a nice charge
The upgrade you mentioned is the ASC2 front end.  It is a sonic improvement over ASC1.  Also, the ASC2 adds, among other things, an Ethernet connection, which requires a hard wire connection into your LAN.  This allows you to play MQA from Tidal using Roon or Bel Canto’s SEEK app on you iPad or iPhone. You ain’t heard nothing yet.
Hi Whitecamaross, your thread is one of the most interesting in HiFi forums I have ever read. We have one thing in common, you use the Monitor Audio 500 and I use the humble Monitor Audio BX1.  Alot of HiFi snobs in UK snub the Monitor Audio brand so it only makes it extra special that you choose it above all other speakers. I hope you stick with your new speakers and the Black system for a while so you can rest and enjoy the music!
Looking forward to this mark. I want to hear this full throttle.

Stsrgazer: I love the platinum 500s. They are an incredible speaker leaving me with zero desire to try anything else anytime soon.
