My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

WC,
Since I am not a professional recording/mastering engineer, I listen for enjoyment of the music rather than critiquing the recording quality.  Classical music is very complex and I need any component to reveal more of the music.  I can easily ignore recording flaws if the volume is not too loud.  There is more revealed musical beauty, so for me beauty is directly correlated with clarity.  As for our favorite analogy, women are usually more beautiful when seen live up close, compared to untouched pictures where resolution is not quite as good as live.
Hi vinny,
i unfortunately don’t have interest in digging too deep into the tube world at this time since I switch gears often. I appreciate the input though.
Centaur 2 Monos back in the mix after a 3 day hiatus. Here are my impressions:

- massive stadium size soundstage making the Rowlands sound small in comparison.
- bottom end that is perhaps 3 times deeper than the Rowland 925s
- tons of detail and clarity
- when pushed hard, they sound like an airplane taking off. Big, bold, deep, wide, huge, no fatigue.

This added a boat load of confusion for me now. Going back to the constellation amps just made me fall back in love with them. They are reminding me WHY I chose them at AXPONA.
If I listen at low volume, I’d probably take the Rowland 925s just because they sound really detailed and liquid but when pushed hard they simply can’t hang with the constellation centaur 2s. They begin to “thin out” just a little bit.
I guess we don’t realize what we have until it is gone but I’m glad I’m my case the amps aren’t gone :)
@whitecamaross  the questions about your recent favourite top 5 power amplifiers and im just adding your top 5 preamplifiers
@whitecamaross
At the beginning of your shootout 3years ago you mentioned pass 250.8 and parasound  jt1 as your absolute fav all around and bass amplifiers. Do they still stand or have they been trumped since?
How about those luxman amps?
Multi channel amp? Classe audio?

What was the absolute  best sounding amp under 10k or 5k you ever auditioned?
WC,
Since I believe you can't afford to keep both the 925 and Centaur, other factors might help with your decision, but be patient.  The 32 dB gain of the 925 will make it possible to eliminate the preamp, enhancing the clarity further as well as saving more money by eliminating another set of interconnects.  As I recall, the lower 26 dB (as I recall) of the Centaur may require the preamp.  At present, which amp is warmer in tone quality in midrange and HF?   I have the impression that the Centaur is more bass oriented and less detailed than the 925, which is perhaps a little more truthful in midrange and HF.  But the 925 is no wimpy low powered amp, and more break in as advised by Guido and others is appropriate.   Don't discard this gem for the 5th time, literally.
Vinny,
I answered that question for others in detail. Please scroll back a few pages. I did a write up for everyone to see what I consider good and not so good.
Has original poster gotten to BAT VK-500 yet? Maybe cus it’s 114 lbs it won’t work for his home theater setup. But I bet if he could wedge it in there somewhere, his mind would be blown!
@whitecamaross scroll to what page? Theres 146 of them. To save time help me where that full amp write up is?
Thanks
Thanks @whitecamaross for your updated list but i never read why your highly touted parasound jc1 and pass 250.8 were left out of that final amp list since at an earlier time you touted those as the best overrall sound especially depth width mids and great bass slam. Curious at What made you change your mind?
Were you using the Mcintosh mc1100 preamp?
You really need to read the whole thread vinny55 and pretty much all your questions will be answered, you just cant jump in on page 140sh and continue to ask questions that have been covered.
Vinny,
Tecknik is right. You gotta read in order to hopefully get your questions answered. The jc1 and 250.8 were good UP UNTIL that point. I eventually reviewed more amps which are better and about the same money. For instance, the simaudio 860 amp is a better amp than the 250.8. It can be bought for about 1500 dollars more than the 250.8 on the used market. It adds better bass control and a much bigger presentation with silky highs.
Jc1s are beasts with bass control but they don’t have the best highs. They are a little unrefined when compared to the simaudio.
Hope this helps.
Brettmcee,
i had the bat 600se and although it is a very well built amp, it is too warm sounding. It reminds me a lot of Classe audio. They are amps that are excellent for bright sounding speakers where the highs need to be tamed.
Thanks..Ive tried to read everything but so many distracting comments you do realize theres over 7000 comments on this post and 146 pages it would take me hours to get thru it all.

Few years ago a listened to a Luxman 4000a power amp playing a cd through Marantz cd73 connected to Tannoy Autographs. You have never heard mids and depth until you hear Tannoy Autographs.
They are very efficient over 100db .

My suggestion dont limit yourself to one type of speaker

Hey Vinny,

Isnt the Ops fault you came late to the party (Or entrance into the Asylum might be more appropriate). You can thank a certain individual for posting 700+ posts on the thread in the past year for making this page so difficult and daunting to navigate for somebody just discovering the thread. Just IGNORE those posts which represent about 1/3 of the entire length of this thread....that might be a low estimate.

Thread statistics...

Inaugural post 10/16/16
Approximately 1700 total posts on 4/22/18
OP responsible for around 1/3 of all posts at that time

7220 total posts as of this morning
One person responsible—who had never posted on the thread prior to 4/23/18–for nearly 720 posts... not the OP
OP responsible for approximately 1/6 of posts since 4/22/18

In only 13 months of a thread that is 31 months old, one person, despite repeated requests for restraint, has now made: 10% of all posts, nearly 1/7 of posts in last 13 months and 1/4 (55 out of last 225 posts) over most recent 2-1/2 weeks.

I kind of noticed one particular guy's comments one per every 3 or 4 others comments and they seem unrelated to the op topic
Vinny55 its actually a very very informative read and worthwhile to take the time and read the entire thread.
@vinny55

@tecknik is right, the thread is very informative and though long, to find the nuggets, you will be required to peruse the thread at your own convenience. I'm sure WC doesn't know where all the items you are asking for are located, though he was pretty kind answering a number or your questions. Hope you enjoy the read, cheers.
Ok Vinny, don't derail the thread, yes there is alot of reading that will take awhile, I know because it took me just over a week of reading after I got home from work 5:30pm until I went to bed around 10pm. I didn't jump to the last page because I wanted to have a enjoyable, informative experience with what WC is trying to accomplish. There is a whole host of great information in this thread. It reads like a book documenting ones journey to his audio nirvana that few if any have ever done in the past.

I would highly recommend that you spend the time I have done in respect to WC and all the hard work and long hours he put into this for our enjoyment it is really quite a feat he has done and continues to do.

Now please back to our regular scheduled program.
Agreed.  I'm a new follower and recently spent several days reading the whole thing...there's lots and lots of great information here.
I already read the first few pages from the beginning in 2016. I had rememberd them last year but decided to come back and look closer at it. Will get to rest of it bit at a time.

@whitecamaross what music do you usually audition your gear with
I said very early on in the piece that it becomes easier on one's sanity if one only reads the original poster's comments.
In retrospect, I still stand by that assessment.

Vinny,

I don’t want to say I recommend this to you today and then you say I recommended something else before. This is why everyone is asking you to not skip chapters or you’ll get lost. The evolution of how things came to be what they are today is important.
Right now my updates will be less because I’m running around trying to figure out what I need for the room that is being built.
WCSS, Please concentrate your efforts on researching and building the best dedicated room, in the long run it will prove invaluable.
I've been checking in on this thread since about page 25-30 because it's great to read honest feedback about gear that is tough get info about, but if someone were just happening upon this thread, I could see how it might seem insurmountable.

It would be really cool if one could sort the thread and just show whitecamaross's content to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. That isn't possible, is it?

@whitecamaross im kind of the same boat at moment. Im searching for the ideal stereo freindly home.
Debating on homes with a big garage to make a big speaker stereo haven because im huge speaker loaded. Ideal Location non flooding and safe area are important. But also need at least two rooms that can accomodate the big speakers on main floor or one floor in basement. I was also thinking of setting them all in a big garage but then will the be safe in there? I feel if they are a prized item do they belong in a garage or should they be part of a home?
Looks like a great unit but at what cost?
I heard California audio labs made a great one
 Great review.
I have owned the Lampi Big 6 and loved it.
I would love to own the Lampizator Pacific DAC.
It would be my first choice.
It is out of my reach ,..for now .
Seems like a nice review.    Not sure about the introduction though, where Rafe talks about Sinatra and the way he's supposed to sound and being played back "right" - the basis of which seems to be his parents turntable.   Of course, I don't know the turntable the parents had, but I'm guessing it was nothing special.  My parents had a turntable too, but I definitely would not base my audio preferences on the sound coming from my parents turntable.  Anyway, aside from that, the DAC sounds like one that I would prefer.
Dave
Update:
Merril Audio has just sent me their Christine  Reference Preamp for me to review. I want to thank them for being the first manufacturer of amp/preamps to send me a component they believe in. I plan to give this preamp a fair shot once the room is built in about 3 weeks. I am also on the waiting list for their element 116 amps.
Ill keep you all posted.

That's a double edged sword. If you rave about it many will think you are being a "Shill" just like a magazine reviewer in order to keep receiving more product down the road... and if you trash it you will be worried no other company will ever send you a "free trial" piece of gear to review again. Tough spot to be impartial given your already on a waiting list for another one of their products.

I fully expect Viber to exaggerate every single positive thing you have to say about it.....endlessly.

I’ve listened to the Christine pre and think it’s a fabulous ss pre, it beat my beloved Atmasphere MP-3
It is clean, quick and neutral whatever it’s fed it will show it’s strengths or faults.
Yep, I agree with riaa.  I know it's not your intent to be a Shill or to be nixed by other companies for a Free Trial, but that is the territory you are stepping into.  As can be seen by the Magazine reviewers, they tread somewhat lightly and don't deliver their thoughts the way you've been able to deliver yours in this thread.  Definitely a tough spot...

Dave
Merrill is certainly motivated to be the leader in high end class D. Have  heard his 118's and although not in a shootout they were impressive.
Update:
Nordost Odin 1 powercord does not have as much synergy on the constellation Virgo 3 preamp as the Shunyata alpha NR powercord. The latter adds more meat on the bones and muscle. It seems as if the Nordost Odin 1 pc takes away a little of the tonality of the constellation while it does its magic. That said, the Odin  does wonderful things on the DAC. It pulls more information and detail and separates things better. I’m guess that because the Virgo 3 preamp has an external power supply it might not benefit as much from ultra high end powercords.

Or the Shunyata alpha NR PC is more on the side of non-filtered. I'm not listening to these things, but it seems that the Odin 1 filters out quite a bit of lower end meat to engage you with more in the mids to highs. This is not a bad thing for some components, but it is filtering per se. Cords are the gateway to system synergy, but be careful of low end foundation loss. It can change the face of the whole recording. I don't know how much Shunyata alpha NR power cords you have, but it would make sense to use some more of them, and stick with Nordost speaker cables? While I'm at it...... some Shunyata Denalis would be nice to check out.
I totally agree with riaa.
It is a tough spot,(for Whitecamaross) to say the least.

I think it takes some guts for Merrill to send their preamp for @whitecamaross to review. He is really an anonymous reviewer, just like all of us posting here. He can say anything about the gear just like anyone else on A’gon. Merrill must feel good about the quality of their equipment to have all these eyes fall on it. Good luck to them.

BTW - I have heard the Christine preamp at a Los Angeles show and asked the designer some questions but I think he got the impression I could not afford it. I always like to make that impression.
Always best to play your cards close to the vest. I understand the desire to want to validate yourself (feed your ego) BUT thats like drawing 3 Aces in Poker and then showing them to the rest of the other players. Not a smart play. You've compromised yourself by letting out the "inside information".  Had that not been done nobody would have any reason to question or have doubts about your sincerity in the forthcoming review...it would just be like any other piece of gear thats been discussed before. Hopefully lesson learned for the future.
I will stay as objective as possible without damaging any relationships. My take on it won’t be “this is garbage or don’t buy this or that its the best I’ve heard, etc”. It’s going to be more along the lines of a comparison against my other amps. For example, will it have better bass control? How deep is the soundstage? Is it a warm, neutral or bright? Who would benefit the most from buying it? Etc. Etc.
I’ll do a comparison right now of my 925s vs constellation:

- Rowland 925s have excellent clarity and liquidity at low volume. They remain unmatched by any solid state amp in this department
- Rowland 925s have clean background with excellent resolution
- May not be well suited for bright speakers such as horns, etc.

if you enjoy low to moderate level listening and you don’t have power hungry speakers that demand sledge hammer attack, this is your amp.

Constellation centaur 2:
- control from top to bottom
- huge sound
- luxman- like musicality but more of it
- intoxicating, beautiful mids with emotion
- HUGE AMPS that will command your space
- blue light on the front is annoying and can’t be turned off at night

who is the Constellation Centaur 2 for? Well this is the amp to have if you have demanding speakers that can’t seem to sing. They push out blanket of sound that is complete from top to bottom. It’s hard to find a fault on the presentation of this amplifier. Mind you, I’m back to using stock powercords and they STILL sound AMAZING. I was actually thinking of selling them when I brought the Rowlands because I was enjoying the Rowland SO MUCH that I felt they were for me to keep, BUT as soon as I went back to the constellation I was reminded of what they are capable of. It is almost as if I feel I would regret selling them because finding another set won’t be as easy.
So as of today, the constellation centaur 2 will be my go to amplifier and the amplifier from which others will be judged so please don’t be complaining if I’m comparing cheaper offerings against this amplifier.
WC,
Thanks for getting involved with Merrill.  When will you get the 116? The Christine is an older piece of electronics, whereas only the Element amps use the GaN transistors.  I don't know whether GaN is currently applicable to preamps or whether his R&D for the Element amps will be used to develop new preamps and other products.  It will be interesting to see what the Element 116 does for you--it is claimed to be ultra neutral and fast but not sterile.  It may not have the ballsy brute power of the Centaur, but it is in the running to compete with the 925 for what that amp does best.  Accordingly, for sonic purity and clarity, I think the best shootout would be the Lampi directly into the 925 using the same 26 dB gain as the 116.  That way the A/B between the 925 and 116 will be easier.  Of course, you can do the A/B at 85-90 dB which you did smartly between the 925 and Centaur.  This is loud enough to hear everything, but not too loud to cause fatigue and loss of discriminative ability.  So you won't need the preamp to achieve 85-90 dB for either amp at 26 dB gain.
