Looking for new to me Jazz music

Hi all,

With being home more now than ever, I want to expand my Jazz music library.  I really like Diana Krall, Brubeck, Miles Davis and Bird. I like the sounds from the trio’s, quartet’s and quintets, where you can Easily hear every note.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

woodhart,

Isn’t Vince Guaraldi the guy who did all the peanuts music?😀

BTW, Early Hancock is great!

All the best.

JD
The Three Sounds (or anything with Gene Harris)
Ray Brown Trio
Cannonball Adderley
Bobby Timmons
Vince Guaraldi Trio
Herbie Handcock (early)

Renee Rosnes plays in an all woman band that put out an excellent album recently.  The band and album are named Artemis.  It is nice to get a feminine perspective on today's jazz.

tuzarupa,

Thanks for your reply.

I have Ron Carter, San Sebastián and am eyeing a couple more.

I have Ella in Berlin, with Jim Hall in the band, and will YouTube more.

Will also check out Clair Bley.

Stay Safe

Just listened to Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette,

After the fall,  My foolish heart and Yesterday’s.

Still enjoying.

JD
Anything by Tommy Flanagan - the Denon pressing of "Alone Too Long" is very special. If you can find it.
Clara Bley - more familiar with her work pre'90's. "The European Tour" album is very tasty. Hiram Bullock at his best.Jim Hall - anything. "Trio" very nice. Mr. Hall has always attracted great talent to join with him.Ron Carter - anything. Great pairing with Jim Hall - "Alone Together"
Just wanted to say I’m now officially a Gary Peacock fan. I just listened to “Tangents” and I am very impressed!

JD

needfreestuff,

Just listened to the Atzko Trio, playing at the Hakuju hall in 2016.

Very nice!

All the best.

JD
swann36,

Great suggestions!  Buddy Rich is so much fun to listen to.  I remember listening with my dad YEARS ago.

Thanks for for putting a smile on my face.

JD
Atzko Kohasi You can find her on sound liaison and I believe the album is named Dual tones could be wrong on that though. Good luck
Hello again hilde45,

It’s funny you mentioned The Tord Gustavsen Trio.  I ordered “The Other Side” by them a little while ago.  Not sure why it’s not here yet, but I bet C-19 has something to do with it.

Stay safe.

JD
Rather than list artists I like, I’d simply direct you toward the ECM label. It’s very eclectic -- they’ll have genres you like, I’m sure, and many others -- but their recordings are also very well recorded, engineered.

Oh, what the hell. Here are three *exquisite* gems:

Tord Gustavsen Trio ------- The Ground
Ralph Towner/Gary Peacock ------- A Closer View
John Abercrombie/Mark Johnson/Peter Erskine ------- Live

Buddy Rich Just in Time the final recording

Recorded over 2 nights, 19th & 20th November 1986, at Ronnie Scott's in London, UK, this is the final ever recording of the legendary, influential drummer, whose impact across Rock, Funk and Soul, as well as Jazz, is unrivalled to this day. I think it is safe to say at this point in time that Buddy Rich does not need an introduction. The man is considered by most to be one of, if not THE best drummer to ever exist. The bloke had incredible speed, power and had so much technique that he still blows the minds of people whether they're an amateur or a professional.

This is a great recording, by a great live band led by the world's greatest drummer. As this turned out to be Buddy's last recording it is a fitting tribute. He was still at the top of his game months before he was taken from us, he is still missed! This triple album was put together by his family after years of working to get this live recording out, as ownership of Buddys music is rather complicated i understand.

Over 3 LPs ..Wind Machine, Night Blood, Ready Mix, The Trolley Song, Winding Way, Harco Shuffle, Just In Time, Loose, Love For Sale, Shawnee, Up Jumped Spring, Why Bother?, Porgy and Bess, Twisted (feat. Cathy Rich), Good News (feat. Steve Marcus) [Part 1], Good News (feat. Steve Marcus) [Part 2]
@oregonpapa

Check out West Coast Jazz from the 50s and early 60s. Groups like The Lighthouse Allstars, Cal Tjader, and Shelley Mann and His Men. West Coast Jazz tends to be a more melodic form of jazz and is quite beautiful.

I agree.  Cal Tjader especially, just lovely music... and of course his understudy and modern day version Poncho Sanchez!
If you like piano trio check Eddie Higgins trio....

Very good sound generally and i like pretty much all his cd....

And if you want real unknown treasure try these 2 albums:

Walt Dickerson (vibraphone) and Sun Ra (piano)....

"Visions" and "impressions of a patch of blue"

Dickerson is a genius and it is not all day that Sun Ra work second fiddle to a musician on 2 albums.....If you want to know why, listen to this vibraphonist, one of the best there ever is....The communication between these 2 giants are phenomenal....

It is not bop but anyway, jazz at his best.....For me these 2 albums are on par with "kind of blue" but less known because a bit less commercial....Not good album tough for beginners in jazz....

Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorious, Ron Carter,
Weather Report, Wayne Shorter, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Monk,
McCoy Tyner, Red Garland, Amad Jamal, Ramsey Lewis, Charles Mingus, Billy Cobham, Chet Baker, Lee Morgan, Maynard Fergusson, Dizzy, Art Farmer, Oregon, I have to get back to work!
Renee Rosnes, “For The Moment”. Added plus, with the great Joe Henderson on tenor. Recommended!

Speaking of the great Joe Henderson, check out “Lush Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn”.  Stephen Scott, piano. Fabulous record.
tiwillwi,

Same question for you.  Any Renee Rosnes albums I should look for?

Thanks.

JD
mahgister,

Thanks papa,

I’ve been listening to at least two albums a day and will check out the west coast sounds.

Oh yes, Renee Rosnes is amazing! Her piano is so good, I can listen to it for hours.
If you already know and like her, try this one less known also but very good pianist with his own distinctive fingers vocabulary....

Tsuyoshi Yamamoto....
